Mack Brown

After watching the Texas vs. TCU game last night I started to wonder if Mack Brown loses his job. I really like Mack but Texas has gone 5-7, 8-5 and now is sitting at 8-3 with K-State next week. If he loses next week you would have to think he is on the hot seat. Texas can't be losing from lack of talent. They usually have a top 5 recruiting class every year. What do you guys think?

If he does get fired. Do you think that another school scoops him up just because of name recognition? Tennesee or Kentucky?

I don't think he'd be fired, but he may have a sit down with the Trustees coming soon in which I forsee a pamphlet for "Florida's Friendliest Hometown" slid across the table followed by a distinct lack of eye contact.

I just read an article that said after the 5-7 season he thought about retirement.  He mentioned not being sure if he was still the right guy for the job.

I'm betting that there are a lot of threads on Longhorn boards about how they should not have let Muschamp go.

Nothing will be confirmed until after National Signing Day. My guess, one more season as head coach, a last hurrah. But they will need to identify his successor first... Not sure who that is. Wonder if they'll try to poach either Sumlin or Muschamp. THIS is the job I think may lure Gruden back to coaching if he passes on the other UT.

Texas is starting to resemble what Notre Dame was for a long time... A program that always has a draft class in the top 5-10 but is under achieving year after year. Some people will say the recruits get overrated in part because Texas is looking at them, other will say it's the coaching. With ND I did think a lot of the recruits were overrated but with Texas they are definitely getting better players at virtually every position as compared to the teams like TCU and others that are beating them...a major part has to be coaching/scheme related.

@Jester - I don't see Mack Brown coaching anywhere else at any point.  Texas or retirement is my guess.

Mack Brown might be heading toward the Bobby Bowden treatment real soon here. IMO if they dont improve/make changes theyre gonna be further set back esp with the emergence of A&M and Sumlin possibly taking the alpha dog position on recruiting in that state.

If I was a Texas fan I would absolutely be advocating he be fired. With the talent on their roster every signing class, they should be in National Title Contention every single year.

I think it's tough to fire him this year.  While yes, Mack has been around forever, it's the second year of a totally revamped coaching staff.

@danthony, I argue that ND's struggles were nothing to do with recruits, talent or anything about players...it was all about coaching.  A team can go through spells of simply missing the mark with a coach and I think that's quite honestly the only thing that has hampered ND.  In Kelly they finally got it right.

@Kurt... ND definitely had some real down years in talent according to the experts and the drop-off in sending players to the pros. Yes the coaching was down as well but the dip in speed and overall talent

If Mack Brown goes, Tennessee or Kentucky (especially) should absolutely scoop him up.  Even this Mack Brown is a major upgrade from what they have.  He's a competitive man, and I would imagine eager to redeem himself, even at his age.

Regrettable people don't have longer memories and deeper appreciation for what folks have done for them.

ND hasn't been  that bad offensively. Defensively they have been putrid the last 15 years which was all on the coaching. If you go back and look they landed some big time defensive recruits but were never developed. As far as Texas it has to be on the coaching. They basically land every recruit they want from Texas every year which would be like us landing every recruit we wanted from Ohio,Michigan and Pennsylvania. The talent is there but if you watch their games they poorly execute on both sides of the ball. You have to admit that Mack has ran a fairly clean program which we have learned the hard way isn't the easiest thing to do.

Does anyone know how many years Brown has left on his contract?  I would assume that there would be a huge buyout for Texas to pay.  On the other hand, I am pretty sure that they could afford it, if it were to happen...

I lived in Columbus while John Cooper was coach and I live in Austin while Mack Brown is coach.  There was much much much much much more local noise about firing Cooper than that is about firing Brown right now.   Yes people are very frsutrated but he still gets milage out of the Vince Young championship and the near miss with Colt McCoy.

well rather he stays or goes he will always be in it for the recruiting national championship lol. personally id be upset with a coach that gets top tier talent and cant win. fortunately im an osu fan and we have arguably the best coach in all of football and hes starting to bring in his recruits.

mark may wins douchebag of the year... again

I think Mack has one more year, at the very most. It's very possible that he "retires" at the end of this season. Texas has too much talent to be losing by 50 points to OU. Also, this is the third straight disappointing season in a row, which is basically unheard of in Austin.

I have to admit, it makes me pretty giddy that our Buckeyes basically had one year of "rebuilding" and then burst right back onto the national scene with a potential undefeated season. Look at a team with Texas' resources and tell me that this wouldn't be Ohio State if we hadn't gotten the absolute best coach available. We could very easily be mired in a 2-3 year slide like UT.

We can't stop here; this is bat country...
