Just a random thought while watching an NBA game and a near fight. Does anyone remember Luke and the near riot in Minnesota? Another question What baseball player was involved in the fight? Cajun I know you have the answer. You surprised me once before with your knowledge of Shelby County small ball.

Dave Winfield.

Good job Silver. I am guessing silver hair for getting that one correct so fast. Not sure what grade I was in I would guess the 8th but wow those were tense days.
How half of that Minnesota team wasn't arrested is beyond belief. Wasn't Witte in criticial condition after getting curb-stomped?
Yes. I remember soon after that game nearly every day their were threats of riots. Many fights in high school all racial of course. I never understood at that time how 5 guys could go stomping on one guys head and be considered anything other than an absolute coward.
I remember Luke Witte sports. It was a sports store and when I was a little kid, my mom took me there to meet Woody Hayes. He signed a photo "Come to Ohio State when you grow up" and I did. I still cherish that and used it as a letter of recommendation.
Great memory. Thank you.
Luke was a great person in my memory. I wish I could have met Woody Hays. There will never be another like him.
Man never knew this. Had to watch YouTube to find out who Luke Witte was. Minnesota showed the worst display of sportsmanship I've ever seen.
Deadspin had an article on Witte a few months back.
dave winfeild used to be one of my fav baseball players as a kid watching old school guys n on espn until i learned of this. now i cant stand the site of him

Its the reason I am happy anytime we run up the score on Minny.

Thanks for sharing those two articles SBM.
This happened a little more than 10 years before I was born, but I still hate Minnesota with a passion because of it just listening to my old man tell the story.
Yep. Remember that game vividly. It shook me to my core. I lost faith in sports for a while after that incident. There was very little done to those involved. It was blatant assault in front of everyones eyes. The coach was a thug. They were all thugs.
I watched that game and couldn't believe what I was seeing. I'm thinking that the crowd is going to come down on the court and join in the way Musselman had them fired up.
One thing...Fred Taylor and Jimmy Crum were never the same after that .

I remember the game and the violence and at that time couldnt believe what was happening but at the time felt like it was planned. If memory serves me right the entire game was rough. And it was a racial incident.
I remember the Minnesota game quite well. Was watching the game on TV.
Minnesota Coach Bill Musselman was at Ashland (College) University during my four years there. He coached the DE for two years along with being the head basketball coach. Got to hear his "Pride" speech for four years during August football camp. Not one of my favorites while I was at Ashland. Just knowing him and his coaching personality I could understand the student and player attitude for the game.
Not a good experience for Witte and the Buckeys and the brawl did not represent Minnesota well.
