Looks like TTUN is looking for some depth at QB

Nick Montana, son of Joe Montana, is being contacted by AACC for his services.

"I have an offer from Akron and Western Kentucky," he said. "I'm really talking a lot to Michigan, Arkansas State and Louisiana Tech. That's just off the top of my head. There are a few more schools."

Wonder if this means Garnder moves back to WDE or if the job is completely open for anyone now.  If so I hope

No way in hell Gardner is moving back to WR...aside from play or two, perhaps.  Obviously, Bellomy isn't an ideal backup and I'm pretty sure they don't want to burn Shane's redshirt, either.  I find it kind of blasphemus to go after Montana's son...ND, yuck.  Of course, Michigan basketball seems to be a destination for NBA offspring.

So what is your opinion on DG and a medical redshirt to make up for Rich Rod screwing him just to make a point?

hail2victors9's picture
hail2victors9 on 27 Nov 2012 - 2:29pm #

I don't know the redshirt rules to comment on whether he should or shouldn't get it.  RichRod did screw him over by playing him during garbage minutes and he was hurt for a while that year.  If he's eligible, he should get it.

He screwed him when Tate was pouting and DR was hurt, just to make a point with Tate.  And if he was hurt, why did he suit up each week?  He couldn't have been hurt too bad, right?

Untrue.  Hail, you oughta know better.  Devin did play in Michigan's first 2010 game, versus UConn, for a couple of plays, when Denard was dinged and Forcier was benched.  Inconseqeuntial play; but not "garbage time."

Then, Gardner played in what I believe to be his second and final game of 2010 on September 25 versus Bowling Green.  Gardner did not play in "garbage time."  Gardner finished a scoring drive when Denard had to leave the game.  Gardner threw for one td and rushed for another td.  Forcier, no longer benched, also played in that game.

No one knew what might happen that year with the development of any of the three.  We saw what developed with Denard.  Arguably, had Denard and Tate both developed, Devin Gardner could have sat for his sophomore year and that would have eliminated all doubt about a medical redshirt.

As it is, Rodriguez didn't "screw" anybody, and he did not burn any redshirts carelessly.  Gardner should be able to qualify for a medical redshirt; but if he doesn't, it is only because we were trying to win games and put the best team on the field when Gardner was a freshman.

If there had been any misuse of Devin Gardner by Michigan coaches, I'd suggest that it was the failure, this year, to have him ready to play QB if needed in a game like Nebraska.

hail2victors9 on 27 Nov 2012 - 4:24pm #

UConn and BGSU appearances = garbage time to me.  And yes, I know Tate was in the corner in timeout.  Denard never learned after that BGSU game.  He should've glided out of bounds then and continued to do so for the next two years.  Alas.  We can agree to disagree regarding RichRod.

And I couldn't agree more about Nebraska.  After the first starting 0 for 10 (or 11, or whatever) and gaining negative yards in 4-5 series, excluding penalties, I offered up a plea to Hoke, "Put him in, please!"  He can't do any worse even if he hadn't taken a snap in practice all year (which he had).

Gardner is UM's best option at QB and I think he will be decent for the next few years. I was almost upset that Hoke wasn't giving him the backup spot earlier this year and starting him first... but then I realized it was UM and felt fine ;)

Gardner is going to be a good one once he gets time under center.

I agree, I thought Gardner looked pretty good at times this year, too.

But that raises the question: Why did it seem to be the case that outside, casual observers of Michigan football liked Garder better than the Michigan coaching staff?

Oyster's picture
Oyster on 27 Nov 2012 - 3:12pm #

Because DR was the Golden Boy/Fan Favorite and he was their best chance to win last year when hoke came in.

steensn's picture
steensn on 27 Nov 2012 - 5:13pm #

Denard was going to start, no doubt about it. The issue is that Hoke is insisting on a pro style offense and was expecting a Bellahmy type QB to come in, ALA his top recruit being Shaen Morris. Issue is, he has RR recruits and isn't transitioning slowely so he took his best QB and moved him to WR so that he could have a QB that fits "his" system. That is a fatal flaw for ANY coach.

Urban got lucky with Braxton, but he was smart enoug to also realize that we have power backs. He didn't try and force them to run his offense, he pounded the football up the middle with success. That is the type of coaching decision that seperates the good from the great, playing your strengths instead of forcing your style.

Maybe Hoke has learned his lesson? I don't know, it seems that he is going to keep Gardner at QB. But will he dump him for Morris if he thinks Morris is "ready?" I don't know. What I do know is that someone like Urban would play Gardner until Gardner is no longer the best chance of winning. Tressel would do that to a fault, he would change the offense for the talent but he wouldn't start clearly better talent ahead of "proven" talent with hindered fielding THE best team, but it was the safest team.

Hoke seems like another RR to me, but a better recruiter. He has his system, he is going to recruit it, but he won't take the time to transition to that system like he needs to.

Well, he did only mention some teams "off the top of his head", so Wisky is probably in the mix. I mean why would Big Bert miss an opportunity to snag a transfer QB? The guy probably takes personal credit for Russel Wilson's success.

Akron, Western Kentucky, Michigan, Arkansas State and Louisiana Tech.

That's a tough one. I think I'd choose Arkansas State.

Only if Malzahn is still there. If Sonny Dykes is still @ La Tech, that's not a bad choice.

Run_Fido_Run's picture
Run_Fido_Run on 27 Nov 2012 - 3:07pm #

Which supports my inclinations below: if Monatana simply wants to start and throw the ball around a lot, and does not value winning on the big stage (while possibly holding a clipboard), either Arkansas State (with Malzahn) or La Tech are pretty good options. Better than being a "depth guy" 3rd stringer at Michigan.

They only need Gardner for a year anyways, I'm assuming Zach Morris will be a multi-year starter, unless he doesn't live up to all the hype, even though I think he's a bit overrated just by looking at film, but his team looks pretty terrible.  So who knows.

Run_Fido_Run's picture
Run_Fido_Run on 27 Nov 2012 - 3:03pm #

Yet, if Montana does end up at Michigan, then he'll have been given some indication that he'd be at the top of the pecking order.

Otherwise, why would Montana transfer from Washington after he lost the starting job to Keith Price I to a Cali JUCO back to Michigan to sit behind Keith Price II (aka Devin Gardner)? Without such assurances/indications, Montana might as well go to La Tech and be the starter in a pass happy offense.

That tells me that Michigan is iffy on Gardner as the full-time starter at QB; they're even iffier on Bellomy; and that Morris won't be rushed into a starter role.

This kid Montana transferred from Washington to a JUCO after his frosh season from Washington, because he lost the starting job to Keith Price. He wanted to go someplace where he'd start full-time.

Presumably, then, if he ends up at Michigan, he'll have assurances from Michigan's staff that he's at, or near, the top of the QB pecking order. In turn, that suggests that Bellomy probably transfers and Gardner is not seen as a legit starting QB.

Ouch! Not only would Michigan have a starting QB with offers from the likes of Arkansas State, but a QB that's worse than Keith freakin' Price! Meanwhile, Morris will redshirt behind a QB who was salvaged from a JUCO trashbin.

St. Ignatius is a powerhouse of a team; and we know a thing or two about St. Ignatius in Ann Arbor.  St. Ignatius has a quarterbacks coach right now by the name of Elvis Grbac, right?

Shane Morris' Warren DeLaSalle team was not a powerhouse; not even locally within Michigan; and Morris himself had mononucleosis for much of the year.

If he dressed for the games and wasn't listed as injured, he will not be eligible for a medical redshirt.  I'm paraphrasing here, but the rule basically is there to protect guys that may be healthy enough to practice but not play.  If they are hurt so bad they can't even practice, then that is obvious.  But if he was dressing for games, they obviously thought he was healthy enough to play if the need arose.

crusher's picture
crusher on 27 Nov 2012 - 5:44pm #

Rich Rod was on record saying that Gardner was healthy enough to play in the bowl game during the season that is in question. At the pre game presser he said Garder was "as healthy as he has been all year and is a full go if necessary."That means he also got those extra 15 practices in that year too. I think it is a shady attempt on Michigans part. Does anyone think Hoke would be pushing for the redshirt had Gardner finished out the year as a average WR?
