impermissible benefits in basketball vs football

Shabaz Mohamed at UCLA was held out 3 games, but is now eligible, assuming the college kids pulls $1,600 from his money tree and repays his impermissable benefits

2 Indiana basketball players were suspended 9 games (out of a 30+ game season) each for recieving over $2,600 in benefits

tell me again what the OSU football players were suspended for last year.

anyone remember back in the mid 90's when OSU basketball coach Randy Ayers got in trouble for recruiting Damon Flint?

my how times have change for the NCAA.

I guess the NCAA is too busy looking at Miami and North Carolina to notice other things.

The thing with the NCAA is that you can't really compare cases, because each one different circumstances and details. I don't disagree with you that OSu in many ways got screwed, but I don't think you can compare the recent cases with IU and UCLA and say, why did they get that when we got this.

The IU case is an interesting one. The guy who provided the benefits to the players was considered their legal guardian, although not their parent. He was acting as their legal guardian because the 2 players are international students who were staying with him in his home and he was their AAU coach. Technically as their legal guardian, he was allowed to provide them with money for travel and cell phones and etc. But because he had given a small amount of money to IU in the past, he was considered a "booster" and thus was not allowed to give these kids the benefits that he gave them.

The UCLA/Muhammad deal is also interesting. A family "friend", which happened to be his either high school or AAU coach's brother, paid for him to take unofficial visits to both UNC and Duke. I am not sure why this is actually a violation, but it is. Because the "friend" was not a family member he was not allowed to provide the money for Muhammad to make these visits.

It seems to me one problem with basketball stems from the AAU ball, which I have always felt was rather shady. Also, these people who provided the benefits weren't necessarily connected with the colleges to which the "violations" occurred.
