If Notre Dame called for a scrimmage....

...could we play?  It wouldn't be a bowl game or a sanctioned game at all for that matter, just a scrimmage.  Play it this weekend or next.  ND could keep "fresh" and at game speed a little closer to the MNC game and we could get a few more practices in.  Plus the fact we could see how we stacked up against #1.  The ncaa wouldn't be happy, but I'm sure there might be a loophole to exploit.  I think it is a great idea.  I told ya I couldn't sleep last night!

I can see the headline now:

"Notre Dame loses to Ohio State in scrimmage before national title game, Buckeye's declared preemptive national champion."

Won't ever happen, but I can dream.

Notre Dame hasn't beat OSU since 1936 and I don't think that would change with the scrimmage lol.

I love how these ND fans think that they have a much superior team than Ohio State this season and are quite delusional in their responses when I question them. One told me that OSU almost lost to Indiana, I then tried my best to let him know that yes we let them come back and make the score appear tighter, but there was no way that Indiana was going to beat us. This was also brought up by ESPN on their College Football Daily segement.

Where does Notre Dame have a better schedule than us? They should have lost to Stanford on a terrible overtime call which, Stanford lost to Washington. Beat Michigan by a touchdown, and barely beat Pitt who lost to Youngstown State and a bunch of other baddies like Syracuse. The only team that they had an impressive win against was Oklahoma and I question their quality after two close games the past two weeks with WV and OK State. I am not saying that they should not be #1 but I am extremely frustrated with how many people think that ND would beat us, not even in a close game and making it sound like they would handle us. I don't see this at all. After talking with a lot of OSU fans and even hearing what you guys have to say I believe the consensus is clear that OSU thinks the same as I do. I just wish we could prove it, and without that they will just continue to run their mouths when this is brought up.

And to top it off, I think that Manti T'eo is clearly overrated and the only reason that he even gets any people looking his way is due to the fact that there are a lot of ND fanboys in the media, as well as his off the feild issues with his grandmother/girlfriend that has nothing to do with football. If he did not play for ND he would maybe get a 2 minute spot on espn, but would never be heading to NYC.

"clearly overrated"??? Come on, what basis do you have for that? The guy is going to be a top 5-10 pick in the draft and stats don't measure what he means to that team.

BED's picture
BED Staff on 26 Nov 2012 - 5:35pm #

His numbers = clearly overrated.  True, he's the heart of that D, but meh.  He'll be a bust at the next level if he's a top 10 pick, IMO.

Numbers/Stats mean very little when evaluating talent and what you mean to a program, esp on the defensive side of the ball. There are no stat lines for how many times teams run away from you, double team you, or how often you plug a hole and allow another player to make the tackle. I get that ppl around here don't care for ND(myself included) but I don't understand how you can hate on Te'o and what he means to that team.

buckeyechad's picture
buckeyechad on 26 Nov 2012 - 6:38pm #

Everyone keeps saying he is overrated because his stats aren't as good as Shazier etc.. but no one mentions that maybe he has less tackles because Notre Dames defense is better than ours so they get off the field much quicker than ours does. Our 3rd down defense, especially at the beginning of the year, was atrocious.

William's picture
William on 26 Nov 2012 - 7:49pm #

That would make sense, except for Ohio State has one of the best third down defenses in the country...

lljjgg's picture

I dislike ND with a passion (outside of this year, they = Dallas Cowboys. More attention for being mediocre than any other team on Earth), but there's no way Te'o is overrated in my opinion. He's controlled every game I've watched. Without him I doubt they'd even be a top 15-20 team. 7 Ints for a MLB is nothing to sneeze at, he is a ballhawk. He almost never misses tackles. One of the most pro-ready LBs I've seen at the collegiate level since Patrick Willis at Ole Miss.

walshy's picture

Look I think hes clearly an overrated Heisman candidate. He's an outstanding player, maybe I should have worded that better. As for what he means to the team? There are players that mean a lot to their teams, I would take 1 John Simon over 5 Manti T'eo's any day. I don't think that means he deserves the Heisman.

"Without winners, there wouldn't even be civilization."

btalbert25 on 26 Nov 2012 - 6:55pm #

Take Te'o off of their team and they don't win a lot of those big games like Stanford, Michigan, etc.  Take Simon off our D for the Game and we still won.  He's the captain of one of the best defenses in America, he's the best player on the number 1 team.  If all we use to determine Heisman award winners are strait stats compared to other guys, our last 2 Heisman winners would not have won their Heisman awards.

I don't like Notre Dame, and I don't think Te'o should win the Heisman, but why not make him a finalist?  He's the most valuable player to the number 1 team in America.

jestertcf's picture

I don't know how you see our schedule this year as comparable to ND's.  They have played some tough teams even if they didn't end up as highly rated as they were pre-season.

Yes there are two Buckeyes in Ann arbor on this site!

ShowThemOhiosHere's picture
ShowThemOhiosHere on 26 Nov 2012 - 6:00pm #

I have to agree with that.  While TSUN and MSU didn't pan out to where they were preseason, they still have wins over Stanford (ref assisted or not, it still counts) and Oklahoma (who despite being a bit off of their expectations is still a pretty good team).  Those are better wins than Ohio State's best win (Nebraska).

Both teams played some crap teams, both teams played close games with some of those crap teams.  I know I've given Notre Dame a hard time for some of that, especially the Pitt game where they relied on a missed FG in OT to save their asses.  Ever since that Pitt game, though, Notre Dame has been impressive, and I've come around on them.  They deserve to be ranked #1 and in the BCS title game.

That being said, if our Buckeyes met Notre Dame on the field, I like our chances very much.  We'd be in for a good, old-school, Big Ten-like defensive struggle - low scoring, where one big play or one big mistake could be the difference in the outcome.

if you'd like to compare schedules, list in order from strongest to weakest teams that OSU played this year. I'll list Notre Dame's, and you'll see where ND's is much better.

USC = Penn State

Michigan = Michigan

Michigan State = Michigan State

Miami (FL) = UCF

BYU = Miami (OH)

Pittsburgh = Indiana

Purdue = Purdue

Wake Forest = UAB

Boston College = Illinois

Navy = Cal

Sounds about the same to me.

@CLASHMORE_MIKE

"impressive results, for sure. try talking to non OSU fans and see if you come to the same consensus."

I like how you can use quotes and partial statements to make people look dumb. I really appreciate that.

But if you read directly what I had wrote before your quoted portion it read "I am not saying that they should not be #1 but I am extremely frustrated with how many people think that ND would beat us, not even in a close game and making it sound like they would handle us." These are obviously the "non-OSU fans" .

I think that we should list them in order from strongest to weakest and take a more detailed look. I would like to see how you claim that "ND's is much better".

clashmore_mike's picture

I wasn't trying to make you look dumb. Saying that talking to OSU fans led you to the consensus that OSU fans think the same about how they'd fare against Notre Dame shouldn't come as a surprise. It also shouldn't come to a surprise that non OSU fans don't necessarily agree.

walshy's picture
walshy on 26 Nov 2012 - 7:34pm #

While I agree that non-OSU fans would think that OSU would lose to ND didn't come as a surprise, I was just pointing out the fact that they think that they could easily beat us and by many points. And I think that OSU fans are more tough on their teams than you would think.

the teams wouldn't line up like that if you were ranking them from best to worst.

I'll use Sagarin's Rankings how Forde used it comparing the schedules of Alabama, Georgia, and ND in a column today (feel free to use another ranking system if you'd like).

Nebraska (17)               Stanford (8)

Michigan (20)                Oklahoma (9)

Wisconsin (32)              Southern Cal (16)

Penn State (35)            Michigan (20)

MSU (39)                       BYU (37)

UCF (55)                       MSU (39)

Purdue (62)                   Miami FL (52)

Cal (71)                         Purdue (62)

Indiana (74)                  Pitt (66)

Illinois (128)                  Navy (73)

Miami OH (130)             Wake Forest (113)

UAB (147)                     BC (121)

Notre Dame has 3 wins better than OSU's best. OSU has 3 worse wins than ND's worst.

one and the same. This poll is a bigger joke than the BCS. USC, with 5 losses, ranked that high? Absolutely ridiculous. OSU is a consensus top 5 team, and I'm a firm believer that with no bowl ban we'd be number two.

they probably shouldn't be ranked that high on record alone, but those rankings take more into account than W/Ls. SC has played the number 6 schedule in the country, lost to 3 top 8 teams. Drop them down a few if you'd like, but they aren't dropping far enough in comparison to teams on OSU's schedule to say OSU played a tougher schedule.

GoldenBearBuckeye on 26 Nov 2012 - 7:41pm #

Agree.  OSU had a terrible schedule and/because Gene Smith is an ass.

And Notre Dame had a great schedule.  Moreover, as scheduled, the discrepancy was even bigger ... USC was disappointing and Barkley was hurt; Navy was worse than usual; BYU was down; Oklahoma was medium down; Mich State was down (OSU played them by accident, while NDame scheduled them on purpose); Wake Forest was terrible instead of only bad when they signed the game; same with Pitt and BC.

WHEN N DAME FINALIZED THEIR 2012 SCHEDULE IT WAS THE BEST, MOST AMBITIOUS, COOLEST SCHEDULE THAT PAID HEED TO NDAME TRADITION with the weak teams (Navy, BC, Purdue) while taking on all comers (Oklahoma, BYU).

I hate giving NDame its due, but we should be furious at Gene (the moron) Smith, not N Dame

ok, so if Notre Dame called for a scrimmage, and it was to be held on their practice field, I'm assuming ...

just one pointer: do NOT volunteer to go up in the tower to film the scrimmage. Brian Kelly will not take responsiblity if things don't end well, and the media won't cover it, either.
