It seems to me that Jim Delany's sole motivation for natching up Maryland and Rutgers is money and television sets. The two schools dont really seem to be a cultural or geographical fit. I don't see rutgers-purdue developing into a game that anyone is going to cut an appointment to watch. Maryland's athletic department barely scratches a profit either. I think he is expanding just for the sake of money and television sets and its a disgrace to the tradition of the conference.

i'm sure he has one or two other good explanations other than money on why he did this.
I put this on another board, but think about this as a step towards a final resolution. In order to get a couple BIG names the Big Ten needs to strengthen the Big Ten Network some. Adding NY/NJ/DC adds millions of homes, and millions of dollars.
Now, imagine Delaney going to Notre Dame and Texas and throwing ridiculous revenue numbers at them. Makes the Big Ten more attractive to the big fish.
why is there another thread about this?

Something like 92% of DI athletic departments aren't profitable. I was originally against taking in Maryland, but with TV revenue that Maryland-Rutgers will bring in, the draw for two more schools, most likely "big fish", to come join the B1G will be enormous. Plus anyone acting tlike this dilutes the football product in the B1G clearly hasn't watched Big Ten football this year. Rutgers is better than 3/4s of the teams in the Big Ten and is sitting on a recruiting gold mine, while Maryland also has rich recruiting grounds.
^^No shit, Jester!^^
It could also have something to do with the fact that Notre Dame just agreed to de facto join the ACC for the most part. By poaching one of the founding members of the ACC Delaney kind of said "FU" to Notre Dame.
No idea what's going on with Rutgers though.
not sure this is true, but i also heard rumblings of georgia tech jumping ship to the B1G
^^ God I hope not. Just say no to triple option football. I think its impossible to game plan for.

I am gathering that this expansion into the NE TV markets isn't as much about Rutgers and Maryland viewers as it is about transplants out east being able to watch their favorite BIG school.
Yes there are two Buckeyes in Ann arbor on this site!
Can Jim Delany recruit? We'll just have to wait and see how he finish this class
O H I O is the Buckeye State
