Do you guys think that with Hyde's production as a between the tackles as a big back will help in recruiting? By this, I mean that many people had this perception that Urban's offense wouldn't be good for a big back i.e. Brionte Dunn last year. So, with Hyde doing well as a big back in the system will bakcs from speedsters to bruisers give OSU a second look in your opinion?

I hope so. I have always loved big power backs.
I really likes Hyde's progression in Meyer offense and do think that Dunn will shine also down the road. In terms of recruiting I think both will affect the way recruits look at our program as an NFL-quality players producing factory.
I wouldn't say "second look" as I think Ohio State has always been a top school for big time running backs. I think that what this season by Hyde and others has done is settle any doubts that Urban can use a big back. Obviously the running game production certainly won't hurt our standing with running back recruits and I think we will Urban use multiple styles of running backs within the offense like he wanted to do with Hall.
As for "speed" backs Braxton has been our primary perimeter runner but in the future I wouldn't be surprised if we started to fill that role more with the slot back/scat back type (ie Ezekiel Elliott). Don't get me wrong I think we will still use the QB as a runner just not as extensively and I think we will see a "thunder and lightning" combo coming from the running backs and other weapons. If these recruits pan out we will have so many weapons that the QB probably doesn't get the kind of work that Braxton is getting. In the future we may also spread the carries more among the various weapons we have which was probably a main reason why Urban didn't have 1000 yard rushers in the past.
But to answer your question yes, I think that we have proven that we can use all types of running backs very well in this offense and have established ourselves as a dominant running team which will help us with RB recruits (although this was probably never a concern).
At the very least this settles the doubts of some RBs that didnt think the offense fit them, IE Derrick Green.
"if irony were made of strawberries, we' d all be drinking a lot of smoothies right now."
It certainly gives Urban something to point to in the future to debunk the fallacy that his offense is only scatback friendly. I think it definitely helps Urban show future backs proof that he can gear an offense to their skillset if they're good enough to deserve a spot on the field.
Absolutely. It shows Urban will play to his strengths. If he has a big power back he will showcase him, and let him compliment other speedier, elusive backs. This offense is not a one trick pony. Urban has said he's never really had a true bruiser for a back. After having one at his finger tips to punish defenses with this year, I think he gets a real taste for it. Hyde's production this year illustrates this to recruits perfectly.
There will always be a place for a big power back at Ohio State.
I know there's a game saturday, and my ass will be there.
grayskull - Derrick Green didn't walk away from OSU, OSU walked away from Derrick Green. Zeke was told we were only taking one RB in his class.
I wouldn't mind having both styles of running backs to throw the defense off with a big back and a speedster both in the backfield at the same time..
@Sarasota
Beat me to it. I'm thinking that he would be a Buckeye if Rod Smith hadn't responded so well to Urb's chat.
We have a pretty good stable of backs right now, especially w/ Zeke coming in... I think Bri'onte will be filling the same 'big back' role Derrick Green would have, and can see us getting another big guy in '14 (please Jalen Hurd!).
Id rather have a multitude of small backs that can run as hard as they can on each and every carry cause they have depth at the rb position and can hand it off to anyone of them for a long gain. i think that urban utilizing his talent at florida was definitely the reason that he never had a 1,000 yrd rusher. harvin, demps and rainey could have all been 1,000 yrd rushers if they were the only rb on a team
It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog
I know that I'm in the minority on this one, but I just haven't seen anything on Derrick Green that shows he will be an elite college back. Fantastic athlete? Yes. Breakaway back? Ehhh...
We came into this year wondering who would be our guy and Hyde has more than carried the load. I think we'll be fine.
We have been spoiled by having great college level dual threat quarterbacks lately (ok, Troy was the only one that was a great pocket passer so far). When Braxton moves on in a couple years we will need a workhorse back to pick up the slack. I think it is definately a good sign for future RBs that El Guapo is having a great year despite being the 2nd option on running plays. As Braxton develops his passing game I expect to see our RBs get more looks as receivers out of the backfield or in the slot.
Urban always said his offense was built around running down hill between the tackles. Very few listened.
To be fair Urban doesn't have his outside the tackle runner yet (except Braxton) but I'm very pleased with what Hyde brings to the offense
