After reading his book written after the 07 season at Florida UFM talks about tenure at a school. The BGSU coach told him to win and get out. If you stay too long you will become a victim of your own success. He clearly has lived by this rule. The B1G is setup for him to be favored in every conference game for the next 5 years other than maybe Michigan. However, if he does not like his qb after Braxton or OSU's new assistants after Herman, Withers, and Fickle all leave to take HC jobs, how long does he stay?

I don't even want to speculate on this. It could be 5 years, or it could be 10. But I prefer to just think about the fact that he's our coach now and that's all that matters.
I know people will look at his progression from BGSU obscurity to Florida success\flameout and say he won't be here long but I really don't think that's the case. The guy clearly loves coaching-you can see it whenever the camera focuses on him pre kick off-the shot of him prior to the PSU game is one of the most telling shots of this season.
OSU fans are sometimes without rival when it comes to the way they harp on their favorite team, but the whole SEC Florida thing is a different world that burns out even the best coaches. I'd be shocked if Saban and Les are there another 3 years. My point is that Meyer is in a place that will absolutely cut his stress level into pieces if he wins and beats UM. It had a feel in Florida (and the subsequent butt hurt from the locals tells me its true) that nothing he did was good enough for the crazy Gainesville idiots. OSU can turn on a coach but I really don't think he'll have the same kind of pressure as he did in UF. I really don't see this being a short term thing given his age and new outlook on football\life balance. Anything can happen but he does appear ready for the long haul. And that really sucks for the rest of the B1G.
4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off
As long as he wants to.
vacuuming sucks
Very tough to speculate this early on but I sure hope it's a long haul because that means a lot of success for tOSU. You know he wants more rings than Saban so maybe he stays until he brings a few more National Championships back to Columbus.
I agree with tennbuck 1000%. But to add to the statement, where else exactly would he go? ND nfw, Texas nfw, Alabama nfw, This is home for him, add that to OSU being
one of theTHE destination job in college football what else is there to consider?I know there's a game saturday, and my ass will be there.
Where else is he going to go? The guy has his dream job, he's back in his home state. Unless he gets his tit in the ringer by the ncaa or dies he'll be here untill he retires for good. I'm sure there will be bumps in the road along the way, but we will give him quite a bit of leeway. My guess is 10+ years.
I'm with Brewster on this. Everyone's judging him by his Floridian Flameout (alitterations for the win), but I think that he's balanced his life--as much as he can--and I think he understands that he's at the top, and can now work on cementing his legacy. Everyone says he's going to retire after 8 years or so, but he's relatively young (in the grand scheme of things) and has his youngest son in high school. That means that by the time his contract ends, he's going to be an empty nester with three college-graduate kids. His window to withdraw from football and focus on family will pretty much be over at that point, and I can't see him wanting to quit after 8 years.
I'm betting on 12+
A solid 10+ hopefully, after that who knows but let's hope it continues. I want my son to grow up in the Urban era and see the opposite of what I saw growing up in the early Cooper era.

No way he's here 10+ years. Not because I think he necessarily wants to be elsewhere, but because of his personality. I've seen tons of guys like him in my profession (finance). They are always looking for the next challenge, the next thing to accomplish, the next thing they can do. They never get complacent and can't stay in one place for too long. I absolutely believe him that Ohio State is the place he loves, but he'll start to get the itch for a new challenge. Especially if he wins an NC or two. If that happens and he doesn't feel challenged anymore he'll be out to something else, probably the NFL. He will just want to continue to prove himself the best if at all possible. But i'm happy to have him as long as he wants to stay.
Long enough to outdo Saban for National Championships :)

I think 8-10 years...he's home in Ohio and happy...his family is happy....he's 48 years old...I can see him doing this until he's about to be 60 and then going into an AD role....i don't really think there's another job out there he would ever leave OSU for and if he ever coached anywhere else it would be Notre Dame (let's say he retired after 8 years at OSU, sat out one and came back)...but never say never...Tress was only going to coach another 5 years or so and NOBODY saw him exiting before last season so anything can happen
After his 18th consecutive National Championship. It would be time.
Urban is an Ohioan, his wife is an Ohioan. Ohio is ALWAYS home no matter how long you are away and Ohio sports are in the blood of every Ohioan (even LeBroner will someday realize this is why everyone in Cleveland hates him. It's not because he left, it's became he pooped on his home team).
As an expatriot Ohioan who actually lived in Florida for 20+ years, time and distance have never extinguished my Ohio roots. Urban is a Buckeye through and through, beating OSU in the National Championship doesn't change that. Urban's dad was a DIEHARD Buckeye fan and Urban's dad is his number one influence. Urban was born with Scarlet and Gray in his veins and OSU is literally his dream job.
All that being said, I think Urban stays at OSU until he retires. Mama called...
I like to compare Urban's situation with that of an even more legendary coach. When Athletic Director/Head Coach Paul 'Bear' Bryant arrived to a miserable Texas A&M program in 1954, he attempted to desegregate the program and managed to turn around the program within a year. However, only a few years later in 1958 he left A&M to coach at his alma mater, The University of Alabama.
When asked why he left behind his success in College Station, Bryant replied,
I would say a decade if we are lucky, that is not being negative but just realistic. Coaches don't stay at a school much longer than that these days.
Not long enough.
Alex couldn't have said it better....I agree 8-10 or may be he'll surprise us all and pull a Woody. I'd doubt it but he's were he belongs...no doubting that.

I'd say about 5. I agree with Allday - people with Meyer's personality just generally don't stay in one place for very long. I don't know if he has NFL aspirations or not, but I do think he will eventually want to move on to the next challenge. Then again, who really knows. He could be gone next year, or in 20 years.
AS LONG AS HE WANTS! sorry thats how i feel
I dont know karate but i do know crazy and i'm not afraid to use it.

This will be his last HC job, I think a minimum of 10 maximum 13 seasons and will yield numerous B1G titles and at least 3 nati titles with an overall winning % over 90, the distant future Buckeye fans will consider Urban as the all-time best coach with Woody #2 and Tress #3.
No matter what it always seems like ohio always pulls you back in. I LOVE IT HEAR and wouldn't wanna live anywhere else. From the people to the sports to the weather.
does anyone really think he would go to the pros? cant see it think the pro player would where him down. loves being around kids. my first thought was he'd be like woody. him and his wife being from ohio this is home going to have to drag em outta of the shoe one day. but thinking on the familly side i think may be hes done when his son is ready to play high school ball. seeing him play all the time will be important to him.

Well over a decade. I think UFM is finally where he really wants to be. As long as his health holds up, and he doesn't begin stressing himself out too much, he'll be here for a long time.
Class of 2010.
Why would he ever want to give up the free Muirfield Villiage Golf Club membership?
The Ohio State job has one very important thing the other jobs Meyer had do not: this is his dream gig. This is it. What he's wanted to be since he was 10 years old. Meyer and I are the same age; 48. Growing up in the 1970s in Ohio (Columbus for me) and being a football fanatic was an incredible experience. Woody Hayes and the Buckeyes were dominating and powerful. It was a college football juggernaut if ever there was one. Going to Ohio Stadium fall Saturday's as a kid and watching guys I idolized play and coach for this university, I can tell you If I had the chance to be the HC at OSU you would have to blow me outta the job with dynamite to get me to leave. I'll bet that Meyer is here MUCH longer than at any of his previous stops (which I realize isn't saying much) simply because there is such an emotional draw for him here. I'll say a decade at least, and this ten year stretch in Urban Meyer's coaching career should be the acme from every perspective. He'll be the best coach / recruiter / motivator he's ever been... by a wide margin (and that is saying something).

The man loves Ohio State just as much, if not more, than being a HC. Ohio State was always his dream job ever since he began coaching. He is getting paid top dollar so if his tenure at Ohio State is shorter than it was in Gainesville, I would be quite surprised. I think it's safe to say his tenure with the Good Guys is going to be the longest tenure he has had with a single team. I hope I'm not wrong on this btw.
I think when he's done at Ohio St ( after 10yrs) he's done coaching.
Also I dont think his time frame at BG & Florida have anything do with how long he stays at Ohio St.
O H I O is the Buckeye State
I believe he stays until he Retires. Lets Face it Ohio State is a Dead End Job. It doesnt get any better. Yes Ala and LSU Im talkin to you. It doesnt get any better than OSU.
Now lets just add Timmons to the roster.
When I step off the plane in Ohio, I have an immediate sense that it is where I belong. I love it there. Nothing feels quite the same & I never want to leave. I think it really is a special place filled with a certain breed of people. I have always felt closer to it than I have Florida although, like Pierogyjim above - I spent more than 20 years down here. I have no actual connection to this place - it's just where I ended up. Ohio is home. I hope Urban loves it there half as much as I do. If so - he'll be there long enough...

I've decided not to be concerned about how long he's going to be here. There's no way to project it right now anyway. If he wins 2 titles in 5 years then burns out and leaves then so be it. Maybe he wants his name to be the the name and face of thise program so he sticks around 15 years. No one knows what he'll do. I'm just going to enjoy the ride and I won't worry about what happens going on from here.
He will stay until the year 2020 according to some confirm sources.
Ohio State's band SLAUGHTERED Michigan's band. If this were a football game, it would have been Florida State vs. Savannah State. - SB Nation following OSU vs. UM 2012
What are those sources, BME?
8 seasons would be nice, I'd like longer, but I'd take 8 years.
Hopefully until he decides to retire for good, from coaching college football. Now that we got em', I don't wanna see him anywhere else
With his high level of income and advances in modern medicine he could probably live till 245-300. So I'll give him 80 years or so
Wherever you are, there you be!
^^Awesome!
In an interview I read with his daughter, she said she thought it would be about 5 years. I hope she is a bad judge in regards to her father.
Florida was his last stepping stone to a real destination job at Ohio State.
Tomorrow
7 years
Hopefully 10-15yrs+!!!! I love Urb!!
I'm hoping for at least as long as his contract is (7 years?). i guess the next question is where would he go. a football friend of mine told me a story (don't know if it's true or not..leaning towards not) that he told shelly there are three schools he would take no matter what and wouldn't discuss with her. OSU, ND, and AACC. I find the last school extremely hard to believe. especially since his contract at Florida had a no-buyout clauses for both ND and OSU. I just really hope his family and him can continue to balance their lives so they stay happy and keep beating the sh.t out of everyone else. because i like ohio state football.
I like football
That is a fact. I read an interveiw with him a few years ago and he confirmed that. It was right after Weis was fired I believe. He stated that she has a say in every job he takes except for those 3.
I was unaware of the Michigan job being in that list. I knew ND and OSU were the main two. But now that he is coaching at OSU I see no way he ever coaches at Michigan anyways.
Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite
I have tried to find the interview, but can't right now. I'll look when I get home. I would agree that tsun is probably out now, but I wouldn't count out ND in the future. It would probably depend on how long Kelly stays there, but you have to consider that there really isn't much more he can move up to from ND if he stays in the college ranks.
This is a fair question, but clearly from a rosy-eyed perspective. I mean no head coach has left Ohio State on their own terms since Paul Brown I believe (fact check anyone?). We were saying the same things about Tress in 2002/3.
That said obviously hope his tenure does not end badly and we get a good 10 years, that seems to be the number anymore...after 10 and it seems like things tend to fall off the rails.
Did Woody leave? I can't see Urban punching a player on the other team. Urban won't lose 3 or 4 games, he didn't this year.(Bruce) Urban won't lose to Michigan every year(Cooper). This is his dream job. His wife says the day Tressel stepped down she knew they were moving to Columbus. If he can avoid something similar to what happened to Tressel, he will step down/retire when he no longer has the itch.
