I guess my faith in Fickell is still good for another week. I argued with several fans on here about the fact that injuries and all of the other factors were hurting our defense more than the coaching and I was attacked for it. Urban had faith in his staff and quite honestly so did I. Lately the coaching staff is proving that they do NOT need to be fired. When I mentioned that it wasn't cool to prematurely call for a guy's job when he has a family to support like the rest of us you would have thought I was a horrible person and I was told "so what?" Well to you kind sir - Luke and I say BITE IT. At least for the next couple of weeks! Still some flaws, but more like the Silver Bullets we all expect. Now please don't let me down Luke because I have publicly gone to bat for you and I will be pissed if we take a step back in the last two games, but for now I must tip my hat and say, "Good Job D. Good Job."

I like the defense now especialy those blitzes.
Urban has been quoted as saying he went over to talk and be more involved with the D. He made the call to be more aggressive (man to man and more blitzes). Wasn't it also Urban's idea to move Boren to linebacker? I really think Urban saved Luke and maybe other D coaches their jobs. They seemed certain that they just couldn't bring much pressure or blitzes even before losing Sabino and others to injuries. I really think Luke is a very conservative coach based on what we saw from him as head coach last year and the D this year, until Meyer pressed the issue. Maybe we don't blame Fickell as much as he learned under Tressel who was great for OSU but undoubted one of the most conservative coaches around. If Tress called the D plays I think it would have been similar to what Luke was trying to do earlier this year (bend, don't break, don't bring too much pressure etc)...not blaming Tress, just saying Luke was probably coaching how he'd been brought up and now we'll see if he'll take on more of Urban's style/beliefs?
D. Anthony
Someone deserves the Steve Luke award for moving Boren (not that there is one, but there should be)
I was wondering the same thing about Fickel. Is he just that conservative from learning under Tressel or what. I will give him props though for the last few games. Good job D
The coaches finally have some confidence that the players understand the defense (it has taken them this long). A half-season experience with some veterans added in positions of need plus better tackling fundamentals and pursuit angles equals the coaching staff being able to play more aggressively.
Good points. Obviously Urban has his stamp on the defense a bit more. I actually couldn't understand that if I'm a go-for-broke kind of coach how I would not enforce that mentality on my defensive coaches from the start. Maybe he relied too much on their decisions early on, but as the CEO you have to say "This is what I want and expect. Now get it done."
@D. Anthony My thoughts too. If it weren't for a great head coach recognizing the problem then coming up with a solution, the defense would not be performing as it is. We are still weak at LB and DB, but with Urban on their asses, those guys are playing much better.
R.Shazier has been playing lights out for the last 3 weeks. He is the B.Miller of the defense, and their finally starting to use him in a variety of different roles, not to mention his tackling has been much improved. His improved play seemed to also coincide with the improvement of the defense. He was already fast, but for the last couple of weeks he seems to be playing even faster, I do believe the light has come on for Mr.Shazier. I commend Z.Boren on his move to LB, and he is doing a admirable job, but that guy is so slow, our entire defense as a whole is slow. I watched the Bama vs. Lsu game, those defenders run/move like deers. We have a ways to go I think before being able to compete w/the tip top teams of the SEC, but we are going to get there.
Its obvious Fickell was running schemes and plays he was using last year. The soft zones and rushing 3 guys makes my blood boil. Now Fickell has to learn defense the Urban way. Zone blitzes and man to man defense seems to be turning this defense into a contender again.
"if irony were made of strawberries, we' d all be drinking a lot of smoothies right now."
Am I the only one who is still pulling his hair out over our safety play? They're only slightly less experienced than our D-line (several have had 2 to 3 years of game experience), but Christian Bryant keeps making stupid mistakes, costing us penalty yards most often in 15 yard increments, while C.J. Barnett and Ohrian Johnson have been mediocre at best...
The guys are finally playing like they should as well. Look at the stats Shazier has put up lately...those are numbers that could win him some awards if they are consistent. The D-Line has been spending a lot more time in the backfield and the secondary is getting it together too.
Fickell bashing will probably go to whole new levels next year. The only starters back next year are both Safeties, which are average at best, Shazier, and maybe Hankins and Roby if they don't go pro. It is going to be a very young and inexperienced defense, which means there will likely be as many, if not more, mistakes as there were this year. Hopefully, he survives until 2014, because that will be his first chance to show what he can do with a talented and experienced defense.
I don't care who runs the defense as long as they stay after the players to at least make an honest attempt to tackle people, and not that NFL/Hollywood crap they were doing early on. They have been noticably better at it the last two games. I could live with Mickey Mouse as a D-coordinator as long as he stays focused on keeping the D tackling well.
OSU deserves a great D-Coordinator and if Fickell's not it, they'll replace him. If it takes Urban to goose Fickell into being a good defensive coordinator - OK I can live with that. The question is, how long will Urban live with that?

Luke is running the defense that Urban wants him to run.. When/if Fickell leaves, the next DC will run what Urban wants. Urban said he picked asst. coachs that will work with him on what he wants to do. It was just crazy to think that all the new coachs this year would be perfect right out the gate and then throw in key injuries & a bunch of young players that lack experience. Plus there is 2 DC's and its just wrong to point the finger at one.
10-0 is a good place to be and when the offense wasn't 100% the D helped preserve the W and keep the Buckeyes undefeated. It was an all around team perfomance and credit goes to all the players & coachs
Go Bucks
O H I O is the Buckeye State
Of course Urb gets credit for moving Boren....what the heck, you think Luke has the authority to move personnel like that?
And while we're at it, if moving Boren was such a catalyst what do you think that tells you about the talent and leadership on the defensive side of the ball?
Luke was everyone's scapegoat when the defense was under performing, it was absolutely sickening to read on here.
I love luke fickell and I'm not afraid to admit that. When you talk buckeye...this guy is about as loyal and devoted as they get. I'm sorry, but giving credit for the improved defensive play to urban is silly. Was he concerned about it? Yes. Did he light a fire under their asses? Yes. Fact of the matter is urban may be a little more involved, but the defensive staff is still in charge of getting hese guys ready in practice and making adjustments and handling the d on game day. Shazier has been playing lights out. Simon has been a monster. Nate williams looks more like himself finally. And the young guys are starting to come around up front as well. And boren keeps getting better the more he figures out the defense. But I agree with what was said about the safeties. Not sure what is going on with barnett...is he still banged up or has he regressed? Orhian johnson has never been very good as far as I'm concerned. He reminds me of anderson russell...which isn't a good thing. And bryant can be solid one second, then make you scratch your head and say what were you thinking the next. Not sure what planet he's on sometimes. I mean, urban made a statement, and these guys took it to heart. But giving him credit for the improvement in calling the defense isn't fair to fickell. he's still the guy calling the plays.
