Big 10 Grantland

An interesting read on Grantland about the Big 10. Does anybody else have friends who are fans of other conferences who ragged you about the B1G's latest additions?

No friends that ragged me, but its hard for me to refute that article.

The B1G outside of OSU has been a big steaming pile of crap for quite some time now.

My sincerest wish is that we do next add UNC and GA Tech or Texas and GA Tech, because we desperately need those recruiting grounds. The problem is that I just don't see any non-OSU, Michigan or PSU team being able to recruit even if we do expand the footprint.

Wisconsin is just not going to attract very many Texas players. Purdue and Illinois are not going to grab a bunch of Georgia kids.

Fortunately for me I root for OSU and only OSU. Ohio is still a hotbed of high school talent, and Urban has shown (and to some extent Tressel too) that we can recruit some high-potential players from Texas, Florida, and Georgia.

Currently a grad student at UF.  Definitely got some shit from them.  They are still jealous Urban spurned them for greener pastures though.

I keep hearing the same kind of BS from UK fans.  The B1G will take anyone.  Can't believe they are taking those crappy schools etc.  I said I agree on the surface it doesn't look like significant moves if you just look at things from the perspective of on field competition in football, but financially and for the future it was a pretty good move.  Of course when you mention things like the AAU, research dollars, TV markets, and demographics they just don't compute.  To them it's RUTGERS BAD=DUMB MOVE.

UK fans?  Giving you BS about Rutgers and Maryland from a football perspective?  My money would be on Rutgers and Maryland over UK any day of the week in football...

Not buying any of that from Grantland.

And oh by the way, Michigan's intercollegiate athletics have done just fine nationally.  Since the inception of the NACDA Directors' Cup in 1994, Michigan has been a Top 10 program in all but four years.  The Ohio State University has been outside of the Top 10 more than half the time, but has had a string of good years in the last four years, finishing 4th, 2nd, 8th and 10th, going back to '08-'09.

Anyway, if you accept Grantland's simplistic "this is where college football players come from" analysis, then Oregon, Kansas State, Boise State and Nebraska should all suck.

But most of all -- and the only reason for me to bother to share these thoughts with my Buckeye friends -- is that I reject the notion that an undefeated Ohio State football team would somehow not merit a chance at the national title game, somehow being reflective of Big Ten Conference weakness.  Baloney.  If Ohio State were not operating under a one-year bowl ban, a win over Michigan would have merited your 12-0 team the chance to play a 12-0 Notre Dame team in the national championship game.  And all of you guys would be the first to demand it.  Rightfully so.  I'd demand it!

@ALAHN:  UK fans think their knowledgable when it comes to football because they are pare of the ESSS EEEEEE SEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  They are perhaps more annoying than Bama fans who think the world revolves around Tuscaloosa

Interesting article. The Big Ten is certainly down and has had some poor bowl showings, but his comment about Ohio State's poor showings in the BCS illustrates just how much the Florida debacle, and, to a lesser extent, the LSU game, color people's view of OSU's BCS bowl record. Its a comment I've often heard that isnt consistant with the truth -- OSU is 6-3 (including the Arkansas win) and is tied with USC for the most BCS wins. Unfortunately, the three losses came in successive years, including the two National Title games. In that regard, I can understand how losing on the biggest stage (badly) followed by a return visit and loss the following year has damaged our reputation (as well as the repuation of the big ten).

On the other hand, I agree with his comment that Urban is poised to dominate the Big Ten. As one of ESPN announcers said over the weekend-- we are only seeing "the tip of the iceburg" . . . "wait until Urban gets a couple of his classes in place."

As the year goes on, it's hard for me to believe that UK actually beat Kent St...and by 33 points.
