Best OSU game you have seen in person?

What is the best OSU game you have seen in person?

OSU/Illinois 1984 might be the best I've seen.  Illinois took a 24-0 lead, Cris Carter made an unreal TD catch right before the half, and, of course, Byars went berserk, going for an OSU rushing record (at the time) of 274 yds.

http://buckeyextra.dispatch.com/content/stories/2012/10/12/gameday/rearv...

Of course, its always hard to pick just one, so witnessing the Bucks knock off No 1 Iowa in '85 was pretty great.

http://www.elevenwarriors.com/2009/11/flashback-ohio-state-vs-iowa-1985....

1974 Michigan game - 12-10 OSU.  Michigan kicker misses the game winner for the second year in a row.

Check out the video below.  By the way , if Mich wants to go to retro uniforms, how about these all whites?

And, while it was a loss, the Oklahoma game from 1977 was a pretty good game.

Oklahoma and OSU were both in the top 5.  Oklahoma got up 20-0 before the good guys came back to go up 28-20, only to lose in the last few minutes on a late TD, missed conversion, onside kick, and then a last second field goal.  At least we got some revenge in '83.

Is it obvious that I havent attended a home game in about 20 years!

I have only been going to games recently. Vs Toledo last year, same with vs. Indiana last year, and I was at the game vs Cal this year.

Favorite was probably vs. Toledo. It was my first game in the shoe, and the game went to the wire.... Love it, it was awesome.

That win over Mich is one of my all-time favorites. I watched that last drive over and over. I love it when Gonzo catches the ball and the camera shows Lloyd Carr look at the clock and then he takes it all in and knows Michigan has another loss to the Bucks (unfortunately, you only get a glimpse of Carr's face at the very end of this clip)

There are so many it's hard to pick but Earle's last game came to mind first. Man it was cold but we didn't feel a thing aftet Carlos Snow took a pass and rumbled 70 yards.

Any win over tsun is a great win, but we took extra pleasure dancing on the field and slapping Earle a high five as the players carried him to the locker room.

It's really hard to decide. I've seen a great game in each of my seasons at the Shoe;

Iowa 09, Penn State 10, Wisconsin 11, and Nebraska 12 have been the highlights of each season, but Iowa was probably the best since I had a great seat, it was a great game the whole way, and I got to rush the field. Wisky is a close second, but it didn't send us to the Rose Bowl, even as crazy as Miller's pass was.

...and Michigan still sucks.

GoldenBearBuckeye on 9 Nov 2012 - 12:38am #

Both of the best I evers were losses:

#2   Charles White carrying it like 11 out of 12 plays to score while about killing the clock to beat us 17-16 in Rose Bowl.  A bunch of 3rd and 1's and 4th and 1's that he got by a whisker.

#1   JBLNYC's game at home versus Oklahoma.  They had Billy Sims and Kenny King and JC Watt, and Elvis Peacock and a Selmon or two.  It was a great game.  Poster talks about ffield gol as time expired to beat us 29-28, but what he didn't tell you was that Uwe Von Schamann (spell?) MISSED the kick, but OSU called for offside.

Also, for sheer asskicking in enemy territory I loved the 1982 or 83 Holiday bowl where Spencer ran about 50 yards without hi shoe and our DL pounded Steve Young mercilessly

2010 @ Iowa - Went with a group of 8 other OSU students and we honestly had the best tickets ever. We were right by the endzone and on the field. 4th quarter, 4th and 10 Pryor the Liar scrabbles for the 1st down which leads to the win..

or

2011 Wisconsin- After going to Wisconsin in 2010 and watching us lose this win felt so gratifying to have after being the underdog in our own house. Last game as senior and going out with a win was awesome.

The energy in Columbus was unlike anything I have been a part of before or since, including 2006.  We were so accustomed to losing to the team up north that when Allen picked the ball off to seal the win the whole stadium just went off.  Of course 5 weeks later they won another classic that made this one that much more special.

'97 Rose Bowl because of what it meant to me to be there with my brother, father and grandfather. '02 tsun game for obvious reasons. '06 tsun game was definitely incredible being the "game of the century" (how little did we know at the time) and I was a student at the time and the whole buildup to that game (that was probably the most fun week of college I ever had) all the way through the rushing of the field and victory celebration on campus was unforgettable. '11 Wisky game was unbelievable. '03 NC State was a really good game. The beatdown at Texas in '06 was great too because it was such a fun trip.

Also, adding on...'05 and '07 @ tsun because it's so much fun to be a student and to be there at tsun and to pull it out at their stadium. The roadtrip victories always hold a special place in my heart as well. Especially tsun.

I went to every home game in '02 - obviously TSUN, PSU game was electric, and the Washington State game was a nice test against what ended up being a top 10 team.

2003 vs. NC State - triple OT - craziness.  This year against Purdue also was great for OT craziness.

In some order:

Michigan 1982: my first Michigan game, and one that's been underrated by time--we trailed them entering the fourth quarter and won. No Rose Bowl on the line, though (they already had it clinched).

Michigan 2002: tense and with immeasurable stakes...pessimistic as I tend to be, I was strangely never that worried in this one despite how much of it we spent behind. By that time, the whole "team of destiny" feeling had really kicked in.

Michigan 2006: #1 vs. #2, and with the added drama of Bo Schembechler's death...not a clear top choice because first, it simply wasn't as tense once the game got going (that is, despite all our third quarter turnovers, I never really felt we might lose); and second, the way the season ended inevitably cast a pall on what had come before.

You'll notice a theme here.

I have to put my one Rose Bowl on the list too (1985) even though it was a loss, because, you know, the Rose Bowl.

Honorable mention:

'95 Illinois where Eddie George set the single-game rushing record. As a bonus, those were probably the best seats I ever had at the Shoe (midfield, just below the old press box).

The Iowa game ('95 or '96) where we had the 56-0 lead in the second quarter.

Michigan '98. I had seats not far from their bench. I made sure they heard me, especially as things got very painful for a certain future supermodel's husband.

Penn State '02. There's something very cool--and really rare in this era of football--to have a slim lead and watch it hold up, 3-and-out after 3-and-out. Neither offense could really do a thing, but we had Chris Gamble and they didn't.

Don't make it to too many games, so I have a small sample size:

2006 Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame has to be #1 for me

2009 game against Iowa whre we clinched the Rose Bowl would be #2

Fiesta Bowl was a more fun atmosphere, more party-like. And the game was less stressful. But it's always fun shutting up noisy ND fans.

Iowa game was just intense and crazy, but the stadium was awesome in OT.

When told OSU set school record for 50+ games this year, UFM said "That's good. We're gonna break that next year."

95 Notre Dame.  I was a freshman at OSU, and this was the first game I attended.  Watching Eddie tear them apart made it an amazing first game.

98 Michigan.  The first win I witnessed!  Had great seats behind the OSU bench on the 35, my roommate and I stormed the field with everyone else and took a patch of turf home that we planted in a flower pot and tended to over the winter.

02 Michigan.  The LAST game I attended, and what an amazing game.  I was about 4 rows from the top of C deck, and was geniunely concerned for the structural integrity of the stadium when we won.  I've had a few other chances to go to games since then, but that was such an amazing experience that it would be tough to top. :)

Definately '02 version of The Game.  Except for the old guy who sat next to me and declared we were going to lose after the first series because we ran the Dave 3 times and punted.  After the last pick, my friend and I sprinted downstairs from C-Deck to storm the field.  Got me a chunk of the south endzone.  My roommate was in the band.  That's the day he learned that if you're in a riot and you smell oranges, its already too late; you've been pepper-sprayed.

1994 Michigan Game at the Shoe.  During a string of utter ineptitude against Michigan, OSU pulled off a 22-6 win which turned into a mob scene of borderline violent celebrations on the field afterward.  It was almost surreal.

To make it even sweeter, I took my 12yo. brother to the game (who at the time was a front-running Michigan fan).  I purposely parked east of campus and walked him down 15th Ave where there was complete mayhem pre-game (frats beating VW bugs painted like the Michigan helmet with sledgehammers, etc).  After the whole experience, my brother has been a die-hard OSU fan ever since.  He simply couldnt believe the experience.  We still talk about it to this day some 18 years later...

OSU vs scUM 1998 - Coopers 2nd win & a crushing one at that...  It was the first year that renos were beginning to the shoe,  & I took my son.   After the victory,  everyone stormed the field & most of the crazies were trying to tear down the south end goal post.    So,  of course, my son & I stayed around mid-field,  standing next to a cop.    Soon,  a female student came running up,  w/ a big chunk of turf in her arms & accidentally ran square into the cop.

Said cop,  just put his hands on his hips as if to say,  "You know you cant do that".   She promptly dumped the turf into the arms of my 12 year old son,  & bolted.   Petrified,  my son, just looked up to the cop, & "Go on, get outta here".   Soon as we got home,  we planted in in a hole where we TRIED to grow a buckeye tree, but it had died.

Ah, memories.

Another one I had forgotten about -- OSU vs LSU 1988

Coop's first year. LSU was ranked in the top ten and we won on a last second TD pass to Bobby Olive. We were down  by 13 late, but we cut it to 6 with 2 min to go.  Coop kicks away instead of going for the onside kick, but we stop them, LSU takes a safety on their punt, we take the free kick to around midfield and then score with 40 sec to go! LSU thought they had it in the bag and their fans were not happy leaving the Shoe.  It was a rare bright moment in a brutal season.

2005 Michigan game at Ann Arbor.  I sat next to two huge former um players, who had Rose bowl rings.  They were feeling pretty good until Troy Smith ruined their day.  When it was over, this mountain of a man gets in my face... Smiles and says, "I need a hug."  It was hilarious.  I had been to 4 previous Ohio State - um games in Ann Arbor, all of which were Buckeye losses. The 2005 win was healing for my soul.
