Auburn

I head on local radio they going hard after Petrreno, gus malzahn And Jumbo Fisher.

Fisher might take it would be a big pay raise  makes around 2.75 million a year.

Auburn is still paying Tuberville from his buyout and will be paying Chizik monthly installments for several years to come. Add whoever they bring in for @ least 2-3 million a year.

Nothing quite like paying 3 coaches at the same time.

I imagine that was a lump sum payment, like a suitcase full of large bills, or maybe one of those big old lottery-type checks, but I'm with ya.

Sounds like the Brown's strategy a few years ago.

Soon to be again.  I think they're still paying Mangini, soon they'll be paying Shurmur not to coach, and they've been paying Holmgren not to do anything for 3 years.

I think my problem with it is not that he isn't originally from the US, but more that when he does post, it's like 3-4 at a time, all with terrible grammar, and they are usually rumor mill type of posts...and so it comes off as trolling. For me, it's nothing against him, but more about his tendencies.

Auburn is going to get hit with sanctions. They are going to look bad if not already and I dont think hiring Petrino is the right call ( Even though I think he is a really good coach ). They need to hire someone with integrity and I know in the SEC that is hard to do. I think getting someone like Charlie Strong would be a good hire. Has SEC ties.

I love how Auburn is under investigation NOW, after going 3-9. Where was this when they magically appeared out of nowhere to win a tainted National Championship? I hate the NCAA.

We can't stop here; this is bat country...

+1

Will be laughable if the NCAA finally comes down on them after they bought their 2010 National Title and everyone knew about it, lol. No one respects the NCAA and they keep providing a fresh list of reasons as to why that is.

The good thing with Auburn is that their bought and paid for national title is actually coming back to haunt them. Even though the NCAA didn't do anything to them, everyone knew they were dirty which is bringing more scrutiny. Now with Chizik gone and the common knowledge of how dirty it is there, they will have a harder time bringing in a quality coach as most will not want to touch that place given their heavy-handed booster history (both distant past, and obviously recent).

Holy crap, this was the worst post ever, with all the grammatical errors and lack of knowledge.  Jimbo leaving Clemson that was the funniest thing I've read/heard all day.  Thanks for the laugh morons.

If I'm Jimbo Fisher, I'm looking hard at this job:

  1. He's not an elite coach (brings in consistently awesome talent, and can't win big or develop it), and is going to get paid an elite  salary (more than he's making at FSU)
  2. They're in the proverbial shitter, so he won't be required to win championships to be hailed as a hero
  3. He's a proven recruiter, and Auburn will be in play for the same players (with comprable facilities) that FSU is
  4. Rumors that he doesn't get along with FSU brass

Bottom line, if I were him I'd be interviewing; and then trying to parlay it into a raise from FSU. Even if Auburn gets hit by crippling sanctions, it's the best that he's going to do and could easily find himself in a "Mack Brown" situation: getting paid ludicrious amounts of money to bring in awesome recruiting classes, consistently disappoint fans' stratospheric expectations, and still not fail so miserably as to get uncerimoniously canned.

If Jimbo Fischer goes to Auburn, look out for Charlie Strong at FSU.  He has a lot of connections in Florida and can recruit the hell out of that state.  Maybe Jimbo is going to bolt.  His DC could be leaving.  Charlie Strong at FSU would be quite a force.

lljjgg's picture
lljjgg on 27 Nov 2012 - 4:35pm #

Angling for a raise is the only way I see Jimbo Fisher even entertaining the idea of taking another job. There's nothing that the Auburn job has that the FSU job doesn't already. Maybe it's just me, but I don't see the appeal of the Auburn job. 1) You're having to battle Alabama in-state for recruits, 2) You're having to fight through an SEC schedule every year, 3) the expectations are incredibly high (most of those fans expect you to be contesting for a championship every year). FSU has all that (having to battle Florida for recruits, high expectations), without the SEC schedule. In my mind FSU is the same job, only better.

Ann Arbor Buckeye on 27 Nov 2012 - 4:06pm #

Hodge: I am not sure the Auburn job would allow any new hire to stick around very long without winning big.  They did just fire a coach who won them the NC just 2 years ago.  Auburn wants to compete like Alabama does and they are willing to spend whatever it takes to do it.

Yes there are two Buckeyes in Ann arbor on this site!

hodge's picture
hodge on 27 Nov 2012 - 4:26pm #

Well, to be fair, said coach was able to take middle-of-the-road team to exceptional heights with the additions of a physical specimen at quarterback and a wizard for his offensive coordinator.

When the two left after that season, the magic was gone.  It's been painfully apparent since last year that Chizik was not the reason for that team's success.  Auburn's brand was fading fast with Chizik; they needed to rebrand before he tarnished the program.  A new coach can salvage the talent they've acquired and maintain their momentum.

I think that Auburn is realistic enough to understand that they're not going to hire the next Nick Saban; one: because they can't get Meyer or Carrol, and two, because they're not going to gamble on an un-established name again.  If they're targeting Fischer, they know what they want: consistent ten-win seasons, and the chance to seriously compete with Saban.  Fischer accomplishes this, but will never win it all unless he either hires entirely new coordinators or the SEC has a serious down year (not bloody likely).

Nick's picture
Nick on 27 Nov 2012 - 4:31pm #

It's simple if they want to compete with Alabama and Saban, hire Saban. He wouldn't have a problem going over to the rival school if the price is right.

I have to wonder how much of the firing had to do with the piss poor season and how much had to do with the NCAA snooping around since virtually the minute he showed up on their campus.

Anyone else find it funny every time auburn is in the conversation as far as national titles, there's always some sort of funny business? Look at when terry bowden was there. They dropped a ban hammer on them, and they were a pretty dominant team. Now, out of nowhere, a no name coach finds cam newton, runs the table and wins it all. And now he's fired? Auburn wants so badly to be alabama its not even funny. And will break whatever rules they have to. But they always get caught. Wait til the ncaa pulls a reggie bush on newton and takes his heisman, auburns title and slams them with serious sanctions. Its coming.

Chizik is laughing all the way to the bank! Something like $50,000 a week for the next 155 weeks? In my Keith Jackson voice.....whoaaaaa nelllly!! And he walks away before the hammer comes down. Sounds like a great deal to me.

Sirrius Xm radio yesterday was discussing Auburn coaching job and said rumors were going hard after Gus M.(not even going to try and butcher his last name). Would be cheap, knows school,Team,Recruiting area, blah, blah. Auburn will not get high profile coach with possible sanctions coming,in my opinion.

All I know is I'm enjoying seeing a school from the allmighty SEC get taken down a few notches. You cannot tell me that schools like Auburn, Alabama, Florida and LSU are 100 percent squeaky clean with friggin halos over their heads. The media and the SEC fans play that "innocence" up then mock OSU when we got into trouble with the NCAA hipocrites. I pray the next school to land in NCAA hot water is an SEC school. Maybe that will shut ESPN up.

I wish one of the big ones would go down though. As good as Auburn was two years ago, they're far from blue bloods, and no one else in the SEC takes them seriously.

Doc's picture

Taking down Saban and 'Bama would be the only way this would happen.  Stripping them of their MNCs would be the start of the fall of the SEC.  I have no proof, but Saban has got to have some dirt someplace.
