Another come back line/tired of hearing about the ban

I get 11 Warriors through e-mail as well as going straight to the blog. In e-mail on Thursday there was a bit on how we comment when people remark (to us-Buckeye Fans/Nation) about not going to a bowl game/the bowl ban. I couldn't find it on the site today... Most of the remarks or concerns are addressed by the fact our coaches can hit the recruiting trail HARD. This is a wonderful thing, for sure.

I own a small drive-thru coffee shop in Salt Lake and I represent TOSU as best I can. If you can't tell I'm a Buckeye by what I'm wearing, you certainly can as you drive up. You'll pass my car that has a huge see-through OSU logo on the center of my back window, along with 7 helmet stickers on one side, to represent each of our NC's.  Both windows in my shop have OSU stickers proximately displayed. Plus, there are other OSU items and stickers in the shop, which might be harder to see from my customers viewpoint, but they are there.

So, I get plenty of sarcastic comments about OSU not going to a bowl...people will act like they don't know about it; "sooooo, what um, I haven't heard... what bowl game is Ohio State going to THIS year?" Stupid, sarcastic stuff like that- and there are more obvious comments that I'm really getting tired of. I have plenty of normal conversations about OSU without the bs, so not everyone is being a jerk about it, which is nice.

The jest of this post is; 1. I'm really tired of people busting my chops over the ban and 2. I haven't read anything (doesn't mean it's not there) that addresses the bowl ban in an all encompassing way- as in, let's put EVERYONE in the same boat, except for one team. And that one team would be the future nation champions. I've come up with this comeback.

Granted, this may not be the most original response but it focuses on the "big picture." "Yeah, Ohio State is banned from a bowl game this year. That means (insert their school here) will be in the same boat at the end of the year as OSU (at this date, sans Notre Dame, 'bama or UGA) ..NOT THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS". And who remembers number two? It usually gets a satisfying response or nod of the head that I take as "yeah, doesn't really matter that (insert their team here) is playing in the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl, or the BBVA Compass Bowl....would you rather be 12-0 and banned from a bowl for one year or go to a crappy bowl game that really doesn't matter (not that the top bowls aren't good for biz, but as far as NC's go-there is only one bowl that matters)? For one year? I'll take 12-0.

Drive thru coffee shop? That sounds pretty sweet. Hope business is well.

I understand your frustration.

I love Salt Lake City. I lived there from 2001-2002 working with the Olympics. Great city, great people, great skiing.

Skiing is AWESOME - NOTHING like Snowbird/Alta, "The LCC."  And the weather, I may say, is even better. Compared to C-bus, you actually get to see the sun and blue sky for several days in a row. Growing up in Picktown, I STILL can't get over it!

Just ask fans how many games their teams have lost. Unless they're Notre Dame fans, then you can remind them they haven't beat the Buckeyes since 1936.

Isn't there a quiet/dead period for most of that time in recruiting?  Doesn't eliminate all communication, but it's pretty limited anyway, isn't it?

A complete dead period.  I forget the exact length but Coach Meyer will not have a huge advantage since he is not preparing for a bowl game.  It was the same thing people were crying about last year when he kept the current staff in charge for the bowl and he stayed out of it.  The only advantage he had was being able to put together a new staff, but nothing in regards to a recruiting advantage.

Run_Fido_Run's picture
Run_Fido_Run on 1 Dec 2012 - 7:48pm #

Huge advantage, perhaps not.

If the Buckeyes had not had a bowl ban this year, though, the team would have been spending the last six days in heavy preparation against in Nebraska tonight. As it was, the players were largely dismissed right after the Michigan game and the coaches were entirely freed up to hit the road and sweet talk recruits. They still have two more weeks, I think, before the dead period begins.

And if it's only a moderate advantage in general, it becomes a bigger advantage is Urbz's hands.

I like Hail, too, but it doesn't really help him to ignore the creeping nightmare that's turning into reallity. He'd only be living in denial. It's not a dream - Urbz really is stealin' yo' recruits and preparing for yo' destruction.

It looks like the dead period begins Dec. 17. Michigan should find out its bowl pairing on Dec. 3, right? If in those 14 days, Hoke is not concentrating on preparing his team to win a bowl game, then good luck against whatever SEC team Michigan faces on Jan. 1.

No joke here, one of my friends who goes to Miami (OH) posted that "OSU's Bowl Shirts" thing on Facebook. I pointed out that we beat his school by almost 50 and his team went 4-8.

I wouldn't cheer for Michigan if they were playing the Taliban.

I live in Denver, Colorado so I feel your pain.  My typical response is to ask who they support to which they respond " Colorado or Colorado State".  At that point it is like taking candy from a baby.  :).

Yeah- I usually get Utah (since mormons aren't supposed to drink coffee and of course, they can't figure out I have more than coffee at my shop...)which brings up a strange point. They aren't supposed to drink caffeine. But once they bought up 51% of coke, it was perfectly ok to drink caffeine...I don't know one byu fan that doesn't drink their weight in Mountain Dew or Coke daily. But coffee? Bad ju-ju! No coffee for you!

Anyway- I'm with you on the fans/schools - I get mostly byu and utah. Really? Utah isn't going to a bowl because the suck and byu, really, who cares? And I find it absolutely fascinating that I have never met a Texas Aggie fan- never. Never even seen someone wearing a hat - and now? Well, there have been five A & M "fans"  through my shop this week!

Colorado - man, WHAT happened to that program?!

Joseph Smith recieved a revelation from God stating that Mormon's are not to drink coffee or tea, use tobacco or drink alcohol. It wasn't specific to caffeine. I'm not a Mormon but this is what I heard from a Mormon friend.

Jarrett's picture
Jarrett on 1 Dec 2012 - 7:41am #

I have a bunch of mormon acquaintances- in the "words of wisdom" which outlines how mormons are supposed to live, some tell me it's "hot beverages." Yes, that would, indeed, include coffee and tea, or hot chocolate....hot beverages are not to be consumed. I'm not sure about the caffeine specifics bc I've heard so many different things from everyone I ask. Like most religions I figure it's left to interpretation because of the inconsistency. (I have a couple funny stories about mormons loving their mocha's and sneaking to my shop under the "cloak of darkness" to down one)  I know Joseph Smith was a convicted con man, on the record books, in the state of New York. I find that interesting.  I do know this book also says they are supposed to be physically fit. So, when a fat mormon tells me I'm not allowed to drink, I can tell them to shut up and get in shape before they try and tell me what to do!

is it a regular drive thru coffee or one of the bikini barista coffee stands like we have in state of washington, no idea if they're even allowed in utah btw. either way good work!

It's not a bikini coffee shop darn it!  I think Utah would "allow" this. There is a chain of local barber shops called "bikini cuts" were the girls, of course, wear bikinis! But I'm not totally stupid when it comes to cute girls- I  hired a couple- but no matter how good lookin' they are- they still have to "DO MATH!" Yeah, you'd be surprised how many employees I've had to let go because they couldn't simply add...OR use the freaking calculator...OR use the idiot buttons on the cash register/computer. I've had some whoppers! (thus, the THREE MONTH TRIAL PERIOD..which usually takes less than a week...)

There was a drive thu coffee shop, "Pin Up Girls Coffee!" DUDE, I would drive by as I took my pets to the vet's...NEVER saw a girl or a good looking girl working there. But there was a very tall  bald man that kind of looked more like a biker than a "pin up girl." No thanks! That would be like me having a Bikini Coffee! I'm there almost every single day so I wouldn't want to disappoint the male clientele! False advertising is bad ju-ju!

Side Note: I have a very strict dress code. Wear whatever you want but NO ichigan colors- NO yellow or yellow and blue...I have an OSU hoodie hanging up and if anyone has a brain fart and happens to wear that god awful color combo? They have to wear the OSU hoodie if that happens- it's only happened once. heheheh

yeah, they should definitely be capable of the basic job functions. was just curious there are several bikini coffee stand chains here in washington, haven't had any negative experiences at them to this point. Definitely like the dress code punishment

You know, oddly enough the people here in Kentucky have been really pretty cool about it.  A guy the other day that is a diehard and quite irrational UK fan the other day asked me how I felt about it.  I told him I was cool with it, I knew there would be no post season and that this team far exceeded my expectations anyway.  He said something along the lines of he thinks the school should just buy national championship rings for the team.  I said this team is going to be honored by the school a lot, especially the seniors.

I've had a lot of people asking me how I feel about no bowl after an undefeated year or telling me it sucks that they can't play etc, but no one really giving me a hard time about it.  I'm shocked really.  People down here love to rip the Buckeyes, which I never understood because UK and Ohio State aren't rivals in any way shape or form, but they do it still.

I get comments all the time about OSU, because you can't really deny I'm a Buckeye when you drive up to my business. Some people are transplanted big ten folks, like me. And if they aren't ichigan fans or alumni, we usually have some friendly banter, which is really fun. I end up saying-one thing we have in common is that both schools hate ichigan. It is, without a doubt, the most hated university in the big ten (I attribute some of this to them saying they are "the Ivy League of the Midwest" which is arrogant...more arrogant than simply pronouncing "The" in front of your name, Ha!).

And if they are from ichigan, more times than not (and this is my experience only) they don't seem to have much of a sense of humor or personality. Not saying ALL ichigan fans/alumni are like this at all- just saying the one's I've joked around with (in the same manner as other big ten alumni) they don't seem to get it. Or, they try to throw a zinger- hell, I got a guy that pulls up and says "Woody is a pecker" every time he pulls up to the window and we laugh- cuz we're old enough to remember that and it's funny. But I wish more of the ichiagn fans that came to my shop could relax a bit and realize it's Team First/conference second/everyone else, third. I still want ichigan to be undefeated when we play them at the end of the year. It makes the big ten stronger and the beat down they get from us even sweeter. Rock ON! Go Buckeyes!

Bowl ban is over homies as far as we are concerned. The next football game OSU plays will affect their ability to go to a bowl. People won't freely admit it but that joke is officially dead and our collective joke is about to begin. What joke is that you ask? The one the Buckeyes get to play on everyone next season who thinks they have a chance of beating them.

I bet we get to make ours a lot longer than they got to make theirs.

4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off

You're cracking me up- and I am so freaking ansy for the football season to begin again, I can't stand it- got a LONG way to go. But I have to comment on your signature quote. Years ago, when I was walking out early on the first (really, really bad) Red Dawn, I remember thinking - "wolverines? Did they really have to call themselves THAT? How am I supposed to root for them when they are so stupid?" I'm surprised they were smart enough to load a gun...hehehe.

Wouldn't the response for any fan whose team is bowl ineligible because they suck be "same bowl as you".  For all other the response would be, "The next bowl we will probably be playing in is the 2013-14 National Championship game."
