Many of the post on here heavily reference Tressell era Buckeyes. I am naming a few of my all time favorites a few of these will come easy and a few not so easy.
QB Bobby Hoying./Mike Tomczak Mainly because Hoying came from same area I am from. He could have played BB to Was on a great small high school team
RB. Archie/Keith Byars/Pete Johnson. Byars was probably my favorite and if not for his foot injury I believe he would have gone down as one of NFLs best.
WR. Chris Carter/joey Galloway. Carter was a highlight film most every week.
OL. Jim Lachey/Orlando Pace. Lachey another local guy but legitamately the best. Why did we not get Jeff Hartings too?
LB. Tom Cousineau/Spielmam and Larinitas. One of the tougher categories to name a favorite because we graduate so many good ones.
DB. Jack Tatum/ Antonio Winfield.
Woody Hayes will be my eternal favorite. Pulling for Meyer to br #2

All great picks my friend. We all have our favorites and it's cool to see what players other people have choosen.
Byers got SCREWED in the Heisman vote- still can't believe he lost to that hack QB from freaking miami (2nd miami u). Class act- wish he could have gotten more notice/attention the whole way around.
Pete Johnson- Heh, brings back the memory of him not being able to stuff it in on the one yard line against, God, was it USC? It was the first time, as a kid, I was actually bummed out about an Ohio State player- he ALWAYS got in the end zone...and I think Woody gave him three of four chances. The agony!
Tom Cousineau was a beast- I was hoping his pro career would be more spectacular. Didn't he go the the Canadian League first?
Enjoyed your post! Have a great week. Go Buckeyes!

I agree that Byars got robbed big time, but it wasnt to any QB from MIami--- it was to Doug Flutie in 1984 (who won the heisman by completing a hail mary against Miami)
Yes, Cousineau spurned the Bills as no 1 pick of NFL and went to CFL. Never did much when he finally went to the NFL.
Man, I thought it was the "to be forgotten" QB of miami- darn it. Well, yeah, I think he was better than Flutie as well. I can't believe all this time I thought it was a QB from miami- oh well. Getting old sucks! Can't remember a damn....

I hear you. I cant believe that it was almost 30 years ago! And I still cant believe that '84 team was only 9-3! Tomzcak, Byars, Cris Carter, Lachey (I think the whole OL played in the NFL), Tupa as punter, Spielman, Eric Kumerow and Pepper Johnson at LB! Coaching staff under Earle Bruce included: Tressel, Dantonio, Glen Mason and Randy Hart (former Wash HC, current Stanford DL coach).
Cousineau lives about a block away from me at home, what a nice guy
I'm naming the best I had seen and an underrated player...
QB Troy Smith and Joe Germaine(Underrated)
RB. Ediie George and Antonio Pittman(Underrated)
WR. David Boston and Santonio Holmes(Underrated)
OL. Nick Mangold and Kirk Barton(Underrated)
LB. AJ Hawk and Matt Wilhelm(underrated)*Matt Wilhelm qualifies as the best I had seen as well
DB.Malcolm Jenkins and Dustin Fox(Underrated)
"Anything less than flagrant is just playing grab ass!"
agree with all of these except barton, that whole offensive line coasted until they played florida and were absolutely embarassed simply because of the fact the guys on the other side of the loine were coming off the ball harder, no excuse for that ever IMO, love the wilhelm and fox picks though
dustin fox was legit man, i agree, he was underrated, IMO. Liked watching him play.
Fox had his ups and downs but he played the game of his life in the 2002 National title game. I loved how hard he played, every down.

I will always remember him for his endzone pick against Purdue on the opening drive of the Holy Buckeye Game. Changed the momentum and gave the defense life.
Picking your favorite Buckeye is like choosing which one of your children you like best. At times you feel definite about that choice but in the end there isn't any way to do it.
Cornelius Green - QB - 1975 Big Ten MVP ... not a great arm but he had amazing feet
John Hicks - OT - dominating
Chris Spielman - LB - he is what lbs are suppose to be
Keith Byers - RB - Just a beast
I can only comment on the players I've seen play in my lifetime, but...
Chris Spielman - I idolized him in high school and wanted to play like him
Andy Katzenmoyer - I loved watching him knock the snot out of people, maybe the most ferocious hitter I've ever seen play at OSU
Orlando Pace - his dominating play invented the term "pancake block"
Eddie George - I was at the 95 Illinois game. Greatest single performance Ive ever seen with my own eyes
James Laurinaitis - Watching him step into Bobby Carpenter's spot for The Game in 2005 as a true freshman impressed the hell out of me
Keith Byers - the image of him running for a TD without his shoe is one of my all-time favorite memories
John Simon - i loved watching opposing offenses try to account for him for an entire game. It couldn't be done.

Always hard to pick favorites.
QB: Corny Greene; Joe Germaine, Troy Smith (if I had to pick one, id go with Troy)
RB: Keith Byars, Eddie George (As others have said, Byars was amazing. In his pre-injury prime, great size but fast enough to return kicks. And, as he demonstrated in the NFL, amazing hands.
FB: Pete Johnson
WR: Cris Carter, Terry Glenn, Joey Galloway, David Boston
TE: John Frank
OL: Orlando Pace, Jim Lachey, John Hicks, Nick Mangold, Chris Ward
DL: John Simon, Mike Vrabel, Bob Brudzinski, Will Smith
LB: Randy Gradishar, Spielman, Pepper Johnson, Cousineau, Laurinitas, Katzenmoyer
DB: Todd Bell, Mike Doss, Antoine Winfield, Shawn Springs, Malcolm Jenkins
KR/ PR; Neal Colzie, Teddy Ginn
P: Tom Skladany
K: Nugent
Man after seeing other posts it jogs my memory and I would tweak my original list a bit. Biggest name that toally slipped was Eddie George. Byars was still my favorite though. Linebackers we could go all day and probably not be sold on who our 3 top LBs are. My guess would be Spielman would come out number 1 if we polled everyone, but then again I forgot Pepper Johnson, he was great too.
Agreed, but I have to mention the one player that, to me, is first in his position and my favorite defensive player; Bob Brudzinski- number one defensive end in my book, then we can go from there. Let's hear it!
"I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy." Groucho Marx
Rex Kern - QB
Brian Baschnagel - WR
Terry Glenn - WR
John Hicks - OL
Rufus Mayes - OL
Orlando Pace - OL
Kory Stringer - OL
LaCharles Bentley - OL
Jim Otis - FB
Archie Griffin - RB
John Brockington - RB
John Frank - TE
Ray Griffin - S
Mike Sensibaugh - S
Tim Anderson - CB
Jack Tatum - CB
Randy Gradishar - LB
Tom Cousineau - LB
Stan White - LB

Van DeCree - DL
Pete Cusick - DL
Jim Stillwagon - DL
Tom Skladany - P
Mike Nugent - K
Woody Hayes - Coach
Although I love all the older Buckeye players, I can't really pick them as I didn't grow up watching them... but some of my favorite players since I've became a fan are:
OL - Orlando Pace, Datish (just for his effort on that Ginn reverse for a TD against ND in the fiesta bowl, classic) Bentley. Mangold. Probably a few more I'm forgetting.
QB - Smith, Miller, Pryor, Germaine, Krenzel
RB - George, Wiley, Boom, Beanie and now Hyde.
WR - Ginn, Holmes, Robiskie, A Gon, Posey, Glenn, Rambo, Boston.
TE - Hartsock, Ballard. Will never like Hamby. Dude is still on my $hit list.
DL - Will Smith, Peterson, Kudla, Gholston, Simon.
LB - Lauranitis, Hawk, Katz, Rolle, Shazier.
DB - Jenkins, Gamble, Winfield, Springs, Clements, Doss, Salley, Allen.
P - Groom
K - Nugent
I forgot Beanie and Gamble!
I like Sanzenbacher too.
So does Gruden (and me too, for that matter).
Most my guys are already listed by others, so I'll just throw in Donte Whitner, Zach Boren, and Carlos Snow.
didnt say they were the best, just that they are among my favorites.
Also, I was not a big Dan Herron fan until the end if his junior year. Then I really liked him. When I saw him literally crying on the field because he was so happy to be back from suspension, he made my favorites list forever.
Carlos Hyde has grown on me. I was one of the biggest Carlos disparagers last year and early this year, fairly sure that any number of guys were just more talented. Hyde has grown on me all year, and when he spent the final drive against TSUN smashing the rock in their faces and then making cereal eating motions at the bench, well, he probably won me over. Pretty sure I'd have El Guapo's baby, if it were medically possible.
Also not sure anybody has mentioned Gamble.
I remember Antoine Winfield and the ever underrated Winfield Garnett's names coming up a ton. Both around the ball, Garnett, because he was already around the ball, but man Winfield was just the most instinctive defensive back that I have ever seen. Doss was also a stud, and not to go all modern on everyone, but Brian Rolle was a hell of a player. I really appreciated what that kid did on the field. But of all time favorites, I was born in '80 and I grew up watching Katzenmoyer just crushing people. If I was born a decade earlier, it might have been Cousineau or Byars, but man did I love Katzenmoyer.

Was watching this game out of boredom, start at about 1:10 and watch this formation. Can anyone give me any insight on a set that clearly isn't used much or at all anymore, to my knowledge? 3 in the backfield, puts a huge variation on clear running downs, with a quick (in this case) or delayed handoff. This could be used as a read option play on a running down with the slot receiver, HB, FB, no?
I don't have a ton of scheme knowledge, but it seems like the blocking and handoff options are numerous.
the straight T is ran with similar concepts as wishbone style offenses(think GT, Navy for college comparables) it is actually still used in high schools evidently as i found from this link:
http://thesouthern.com/high-school/harrisburg/harrisburg-sticks-with-straight-t/article_3e07752a-d294-11df-8f5f-001cc4c03286.html
the high school in that article has been running the straight T since around 1980 and the article was written in 2010. but to answer your question schematically whether it is a straight T or wing T offense there are indeed multiple options for ballcarriers on any given play as well as heavy use of counter action and pulling OL/TE's. also maybe try googling the Straight T and you'll find much more info.
hope this helped!
O-H!
All the games of the season are just practices for that glorious saturday in November when we get to jack Shoelace's invisible cereal bowl and drink our fill of delicious skunkweasel tears ...Michigan Still Sucks!!
Thanks you so much! As far as understanding scheme play, this is WAY before my time, so it really is interesting to see, and here from those who may have been able to see this era live. This set really intrigues me.
My all time favorite
