2013 National Championship

So I just had a dream that UFM and the Ohio State Buckeyes beat the florida gators 41-14 in the National Championship next year... Oh how wonderful that would be!!

It would be very fitting, to say the least. The SEC dominance began with Urban Meyer, Florida and Ohio State in a National Title Game--how sweet would it be for the SEC dominance to end with Urban Meyer, Florida and Ohio State in a National Title Game? Full-circle!

That tops my dream of Rutgers joining the B10 a day before it was announced they would move.

Highly improbable that Florida scores 2 touchdowns on us next year ;)

no! 25 would mean they lose the NCG! 12 game season + B1G championship + NCG = 14 plus the 12 from this year is 26. Didn't mean to downvote btw, you can exact your downvoting revenge on me!

edit: my bad, just saw the other comments related to 26 games below (*facepalms self*)

I think if Ohio st. can keep the momentum going into next year that it actually will be Ohio st. vs. UF next year. The gators are really a WR away from being an unbeaten team until they go to the NC against us.

I would prefer Urban starting with a 26 game winning streak, because that means he's holding a crystal football!

If I were going to dream big for next year I would want to see us beat Alabama in the NC game.  Might as well take down Saban while we are at it right?

Yes there are two Buckeyes in Ann arbor on this site!

Before we start talking about 2013, one thing we should think about is the level of competition next year and wither winning out warrents us going to the title game. If we are 12-0 and our best wins are (@ Michigan, @Northwestern, Wisconsin and maybe Mich/Neb in the title game)  I don't think we can jump a one lost SEC team. Plus if the B1G is down, how well are going to be prepared for a bowl game? Our initial ranking and who loses above us will determine where wither we can go or not but I still think we are one year away. Going 10-2 with a win over UM, a Big Ten title and trip to the Rose Bowl will be enough for me.

BS, only thing that would keep us out would be if there was more than 2 other undefeated teams. Even then we would probably get in just based on reputation alone.

Sidenote: I love this commenting feature in how I can reply directly to people.

I agree with most of the stuff you said and a lot is obvious if we win out and get one of top two spots. However, I don't think teams should get in based on reputation alone. If that's the case then we should just play a weak OOC schedule every year and cruise through the Big Ten. I'm more of a fan of giving the team that is most deserving a shot at the title. Hence, this is why I'm a proponent of the new playoff system.

What good does it do if OSU wins out in a weak Big Ten next year? I wouldn't deem OSU worthy because of the level of competition in the Big Ten. Iron sharpens iron, not iron sharpens wood. Bama/Florida/UGA/TAMU playing each other makes them stronger and that's something the conference needs as a whole. Until the Big Ten is at its strongest thus improving OSU SOS can I say they are worthy of playing in the title game. Don't believe me, compare the B1G 06 to 12 when OSU won out. Which team would you deem as worthy of being in the title game?

If OSU is on the outside looking in next year as teams pass them by in the rankings, don't blame BCS/Coaches Polls/AP blame the level of competition in the conference. Don't believe me again, take a look at the slides K-State and Oregon took before they lost in the polls when playing teams like Cal and Kansas.

Cue all the downvotes.

And I'll take it a step further and tell you not to place blame on the fact that the conference is down; blame that a**hole Gene Smith.

Even with a down conference and luck of the draw in not playing Neb and MSU next year, we lose any tiebreakers due to our OOC schedule.  And Vandy was terrible when we scheduled them, so Smith gets no credit that they became upper middle and then pulled the rug out on the idiot.  We got to the NCS last time by beating Texas ... now we're playing Buffalo??

We'll be ranked top 5 to start next year, I'm guessing 4 or 5. After SEC attrition we'll move up. If we win out, I think we get in no problem.

That being said, we need to get a TON better to have a chance at 14-0. LB's need to get vastly better to replace Sabino/Boren. Offense needs to be more balanced running and passing. Special teams need to start over. Lot of work to do before we worry about 14-0.

When told OSU set school record for 50+ games this year, UFM said "That's good. We're gonna break that next year."

@BME_Buckeye: You could argue that K-State and Oregon's schedules prior to their loss were just as weak as OSU's was this year, or OSU's will be next year. Very rarely do you have a season where there are more than 2 undefeated teams, so as long as we're one of two undefeated teams, they'll have no choice but to put us at #1 and #2.

Kirk Herbstreit said today that he thinks we'll be ranked Top 3 in the Preseason poll next year. That means all we need to do is stay undefeated and it'd be incredibly unlikely that we wouldn't jump up the one spot needed to get into the BCS championship game. K-State is an interesting example based on the fact that they started at #22 in the country, Notre Dame started unranked--and both managed to move up to #1 in the poll at some point. K-State with a relatively weak schedule. So us moving from #3 to #2 would be inevitable given an undefeated season, regardless of how weak our schedule is.

(I wasn't the one who gave you the -1 btw)

I made the same argument you did, see above...

A lot will come down to where we are ranked but as long as we win out and everyone loses we should move up. My only argument is the following:

  • BCS Polls look like this: 1. ND 2. Bama 3. Ohio State 4. UGA 5. Oregon
  • ND is 12-0 with a SOS in the top 35
  • Ohio State is 13-0 with a SOS in the top 50 due to weak competition in the B1G.
  • Bama 12-1. One lost SEC team with a SOS greater than Ohio State.
  • Should an undefeated OSU team that played in a weak Big Ten conference get overlooked by an one lost SEC team that played in a strong conference? Can a one loss SEC champion team hop over OSU?

Call me crazy, and a B1G homer but our ability to get to a title game and prevent an SEC team from leap frogging us will come down to the strength of the conference and quality of our opponents.

As for the downvote, don't worry. I don't really care about a -1.

I'm completely stoked that we finished 12-0. But does that worry anyone regarding being able to do the same thing next year? I think the team will be talented enough, sure. I think just the sheer odds of a team going undefeated two years in a row are highly against us. Does anyone know what I mean?

We can't stop here; this is bat country...

I definitely know what you mean. I will say that our schedule next year sets up nicely, however. Weakest schedule we've had in awhile--hopefully we don't take anyone on it for granted.

I hear what you're saying Daitheflu, but going undefeated vs. losing 1 or two games this year has no bearing on next year. Sure, it is more unlikely statistically to win 26 games straight, but each game by itself has no bearing on the others. While I agree that winning it all can lead to complacency, getting through a season unscathed and being forced to sit out on a championship game, if anything, would put a chip on my shoulder.

Urban's teams have always been way better in year 2 than in year 1. Lets take a look at his Utah and Florida teams.

Utah: ----------Year 1 ------- Year 2

Record: --------10-2 ---------- 12-0

Points scored: 344 ----------- 544

Points against: 229 ---------- 234

Florida: -------- Year 1 --------- Year 2

Record: -------- 9-3 -------------- 13-1

Points scored: 343 -------------- 416

Points against: 226 ------------- 189

These are huge improvements. If Urban could lead OSU to a 12-0 record in his first year. Then I can't wait to see what OSU can do next year in year 2.

I've said this before and it makes it easy for me to be at peace with us going to the NC next year (almost) no matter what.

1) In theory we would be on a 25 game winning streak

2) We would have a heisman contender

3) We have UFM

4) We will start the season ranked inside the top 3

all of these will keep us high in the polls which should sway the BCS.

whooo...i'm just getting heartburn already thinking about this after this football season as a whole is not complete yet :-X I'm kind of a superstitious guy when it comes to my sports teams and all i can think about it how much of this talk was going on with say...USC going into this year. Not being a naysayer, i just hope you get where i'm coming from.

On the other hand, i totally see us going undefeated next year as long as we don't have any off games like years past of illinois and purdue. If we ride a 25 game winning streak going into the last BCS rankings, there is absolutely nothing keeping us out of that title game.

You know what is even scarier than that, what the hell are we supposed to expect then going into Braxton Miller's senior season? Blood thirsty and entitled will be the only way to describe all of our fans. lol
