Now that the season is over and 12-0 is accomplished I have already started salivating over the potential of next year. Between the current players on the roster and the 2013 commits, what does the depth chart look like next year?

At the beginning of the season that o-line would have scared me, now I'm counting down the days until they start mowing down opposing d-lines.

P: Townsend?
Pray that Townsend actually gets a punt off in less than an hour
This. Buchanan likes to take his time and it's not like he has a howitzer for a leg. I'd love to have a punter like LSU's Brady Wing. That kid is fast and can absolutely boot it. If I'm not mistaken Townsend has been clocked at 4.5-4.6 in the 40?
He's an athlete. Urban knows what he's doing, they'll be pounding the punt speed game into this kid's head the second he hits campus
+1 for comparing a leg to a howitzer. Haha!
"I'm One Bad Buckeye, and I approve this message."
Gonna have to change the predicted punter...
Honestly wouldn't be shocked to see Trey Johnson starting if/when he commits. Same goes for Mitchell. Also think that Quick/Marshall/Gibson could get the nod over Spencer. The freshmen will definitely play next year. But man, I hope that Big Hank stays for his senior year.
I wouldn't cheer for Michigan if they were playing the Taliban.

^ this pretty much. Interchange Vannett and Huerman..they'll basically be co starters and I don't think Curtis Grant will start. Crowell, Roberts, or Williams at Mike.
Run_Fido's favorite word is strawman.
Offense: everyone will be back except Decker or someone will move to RT to take Fragels spot and we lose Stoneburner, which we have a couple good TEs anyways even though he was "moved" to WR. I except Marshall to make the most immediate impact, with Elliott maybe as well. Then depending on who else we land in this class.
Defense: We'll lose a lot up front, but hopefully Big Hank comes back.. .for some reason I expect him and Roby to both come back. I think our DL should start: Big Hank (if he does come back) Washington, Spence and Bennett or Shutt. I expect some of the incoming freshmen to step in and contribute as well, Bosa for sure.
Doran Grant will slide into Howards spot, w/ Hopefully Roby returning. If not we have decent depth coming in with Burrows and Woodard who can play right away. Safties will be back, hopefully Vonn Bell committs and can add to the rotation early.
Looking at our schedule, I'm just going to go ahead and predict another 12-0 season, then of course winning the B1G Championship... and hopefully their aren't a bunch of quality 1 loss teams like this year and another undefeated who could pass us, but I expect the Bucks to be in the Championship game. Another year under Urban's system, the younger players growing, maturing etc. .. The offense should be dangerous next year, and OL should dominate. Hopefully our WRs will keep making strides now, blend in with potentional incoming impact players on O for WRs who knows. Regardless, this was a great season and can't wait to see what year 2 under Urban has in store!

If I had to guess, you probably got the downvote for correcting a post that was made way back in November. And I'm only guessing since I didn't DV you.
This team has outrageous potential. Just need to commit themselves and maintain their edge; Meyer and Marotti will not let them stray from the plan.
Urban Warfare
Cautiously optimistic for 12-0 but I think we are going to struggle with the leadership aspect. Definitely need to see leaders emerge on the defensive side of the ball, losing Sabino, Simon, Goebel, and Hankins?
Offensively we return Hall. Need guys like Mewhort and Linsley to step up as leaders and hopefullly see Braxton take control of the offensive as a leader.
Defensively we are going to be awfully young and am curious to see who will be our emotional leader much like Simon.
Go Bucks!
Off topic but I think it's pretty interesting that we lost 6 games last year by a TD or less, and we won 6 games this year by a TD or less. So I'm going to guess next year we just straight up get back to our dominant OSU ways!

Seriously, the once maligned O line is going to be nasty next year. And the D line isn't gonna be too bad either.

Are you guys concerned about depth at LB? Especially since Big Ten linebackers are so injury-prone. Outside of playing running back for Iowa, is there anything more likely to get you hurt, than playing linebacker?
As for your offense, it is almost unfair how little you lose and how loaded you will be coming back. had Bri'onte Dunn gone blue, he might actually have played in The Game. And if he had played, he might well have been the difference...
The way our LB'er recruiting is trending, I'm not too concerned about depth.

A Trey Johnson + Mike Mitchell + Skai Moore linebacker class would be fantastic.
I wouldn't cheer for Michigan if they were playing the Taliban.
Personally I feel like our depth at LB will be better next year than it was this year, if that makes any sense!
We actually had 10 underclassmen at LB this year, they just weren't really prepared to step in full-time this year (people like Josh Perry, Cam Williams, Curtis Grant, David Perkins, Luke Roberts, Conner Crowell, Jamal Marcus could all get playing time next year--Josh Perry got a few starts with the Sabino injury, so he'll likely play full-time next year). Ryan Shazier will of course start again next year. Then add in Mike Mitchell, Chris Worley, and Trey Johnson if they end up committing to OSU and the depth at LB is not bad at all. To me the problem isn't so much depth, as it is the fact that outside of Ryan Shazier who's a top 5 LB in the country, it's difficult to tell exactly HOW talented the rest of those guys are because of their limited playing time. Josh Perry, David Perkins and Cam Williams were all 4-star recruits iirc. Curtis Grant was a 5-star, top 5 recruit (but hasn't really shown it at OSU). He could still end up coming on the way Sabino did at the end of his college career for all I know. Mike Mitchell and Trey Johnson to me look like sure things (talent-wise), but it's still up in the air as to whether they'll end up at OSU (and may not play anything more than spot starts their Freshman year while they're still learning the defense). But I'm confident that problem will solve itself in time.
Dunn had a sprained MCL and the LB position can't be worse than this year!
Concerned about youth, not necessarily depth (if you can differentiate). The one big difference is we will have some insane athletes at LB, no more Kleins or Sweats. If they can get an inkling of the defense we should be okay. Don't forget, if Roby comes back we have most of our secondary back to support the learning curve of the LBers.
I thought this was a good point, RDubs. We have plenty of talent at the LB position, but aside from Shazier it is going to be inexperienced. I'm expecting Cam Williams to start or see heavy playing time at inside linebacker. Josh Perry will likely start at the OLB. Both will be true sophomores. I would think any combination of Mitchell, Johnson, McMillian, Moore, etc., would see playing time as well. Jamal Marcus seems to have been moved to defensive end. I think Boom Perkins can surprise some people as well if Perry regresses or Shazier gets hurt.
Nope...our LBs will be better than yours...enough said. Keep dreaming about what could of or should have been. We get it done on your field next year...brace yourself...

Going to be an even BIGGER offseason for this team than last year was... sure we went 12-0 which is amazing but I think in order for us to repeat an undefeated season and then go on and perform well in the Big 10 title game and/or a BCS bowl game (presumably the national title) we need to make massive strides on both sides of the ball, particularly the passing game on offense, and pass coverage/tackling on defense.
I wonder if V. Reed & C. Fields stick around, esp. Reed

I still think Curtis Grant will be move to DE.
If he can't get it by the start of next year, you could be right.

I am a little worried about our Linebackers and Secondary. The Safties came on a bit at the end but I am not a big fan of Barnett. Shazier is a beast but who is going to step in at the other 2 spots. Perry could be great, and Curtis Grant needs to step it up, Boren came in half way through the season and beasted at MLB, so is it really that hard! lol I would be fine if they moved Grant to DE but we are already stockpiled at that postion right now, Miller, Bosa, spence, pittman, and a few others. I know the offense will be fine the defense is what worries me because they still did give up a lot of big plays, even against michigan guys were wide open and denard ran all over us.
I guess these players are ready to hit the weight room. Who is enrolling early?
Our D-Line and O-Line are gonna be so freakin' bada$$ next year. Just thinking about it makes me wish Spring camp started tomorrow.
I think O'conner will start he a great run blocker. UFM he takes the best he could careless if there seniors.
I don't think he'll start over an experienced group who went undefeated. Mewhort, Norwell. Linsley, Hall and Decker will be locks to start barring injury or off field problems.
Run_Fido's favorite word is strawman.
Front Seven on D is what I think will look dramatically different. Here is my depth chart for those positions (taking into account ONLY those currently on our roster or verbally committed for next year):
SDE: Bennett/Moore/Pittman/Bosa
NT: Schutt/Hale/Carter
DT: Washington/Michael Hill/Billy Price
WDE: Spence/Miller/Marcus/Sprinkle
SAM LB: Perry/Grant/Tyquan Lewis
Mike LB: Williams/Grant/Roberts/Burger
Will LB: Shazier/Crowell/Perkins
Looking at this roster I am both encouraged at how game ready our young DL is and nervous about our LB core. Grant is the biggest wildcard...but I'm not holding my breath. I think that Cam Williams will win the MLB spot in the spring and keep it all season. The starting SAM LB spot is as of now Perry's to lose.
I think Mitchell is a must-get and I'd take Trey Johnson in a heartbeat. They would give us much needed depth at the Mike and Sam LB positions. Worley would be good in nickel coverage at a STAR-type position.
I would not be surprised to see Bosa converted into a DT a la Washington this year given Bosa's frame and size. It's definitely a position of need. More so than DE. I think Michael Hill gets a lot of PT early on and I foresee Jamal Marcus make a name for himself in the 2 or 3 deep at WDE (where he finished the season). Don't sleep on Sevon Pittman either at SDE--kid can ball.
If Roby leaves, who starts alongside D. Grant???
At this point it would be Adam Griffin (Archie's kid), but I wouldn't be surprised if Reeves beats him out. Heck Woodard is a stud and so is Burrows (although I still think he moves to safety or at least nickel), so maybe one of them could step up.
I believe Woodard and Burrows are both enrolling early too. That will definitely help them with learning the schemes and growing in the weight room.
don't forget about the other Corey Brown - he'll be a senior DB
"You win with people." - Woody Hayes
I guess I thought he was more of a safety/nickel guy. At least that is how he is listed on the current depth chart. Can he play corner too?

Ressurected thread, the post you referenced is pretty old.
Anyone else think that Bosa can have an immediate impact? Put him in that Spence/Washington role from this year.
I wouldn't cheer for Michigan if they were playing the Taliban.
Personally I think Hill may have the biggest impact. Guy is a Hankins clone sizewise and seems to be a perfect fit to be a 3rd down clogger. I think Bosa would have a lot of impact, if we didn't have so many guys at DE already. I just think Hill walks into a better situation from day 1
Judging by how many experienced people returning I think it's safe to say OSU will be a much deeper team next season. It's entirely possible some of these incoming freshmen might get redshirted. That's IF nobody gets hurt. Knock on wood.
What are the prospects of OSU landing a ready-to-play JUCO LB transfer. Someone in the mold of an Anthony Schlegel who comes in from a different program and shines right away?
"Sherman ran an option play right through the south" - Greatest.Civil.War.Analogy.Ever
I am believing alot of these incomming 2013 freshmen can have impacts.....But they gotta work hard to show their stuff, first off is the "Black Stripe" then put up or shut up(so to speak).....Being from the Mahoning Valley I do know Price is a workaholic, tells everyone he has to be the best to play with the best....Don't be surprised if he turns some heads.....
here is my opinion on the depth chart for next year, offense first......
QB: Braxton Miller, Kenny Guiton, Cardale Jones
RB: Carlos Hyde, Rod Smith, Bri'onte Dunn, Warren Ball
WR: Devin Smith, Philly Brown, Jordan Hall, Michael Thomas, Evan Spencer, Verlon Reed, Chris Fields
TE: Nick Vannett, Jeff Heuermann, Blake Thomas
LT: Jack Mewhort, Darryl Baldwin, Kyle Dodson
LG: Andrew Norwell, Antonio Underwood, Joey O'Connor, Tommy Brown
C: Corey Linsley, Jacoby Boren, Pat Elflein
RG: Marcus Hall, Chase Ferris
RT: Taylor Decker, Evan Lisle
I only included 1 freshman on the depth chart (Evan Lisle) because we have so many returning players on offense, others will definitely have an impact but I didn't list them for this.....I also put Jordan Hall at WR as I don't see him getting carries with the stable of backs we have. After next year our line starts to really drop off in terms of depth, so I hope we can get some players in here for 2014......with our 2 incoming freshman for the 2013 class, I see us having 10 players for 2014, so we need to get a minimum of 3 or 4 guys
defense.....
DE: Noah Spence, Steve Miller, Se'von Pittman, JT Moore
DT: Michael Bennett, Adolphus Washington, Tommy Schutt, Joel Hale, Chris Carter
OLB: Ryan Shazier, Josh Perry, Connor Crowell, David Perkins, Jamal Marcus
MLB: Curtis Grant, Cam Williams, Luke Roberts
CB: Bradley Roby, Doran Grant, Armani Reeves, Eli Woodard, Cam Burrows, Najee Murray, Adam Griffin
S: Christian Bryant, CJ Barnett, Corey Brown, Ron Tanner, Tyvis Powell, Devan Bogard
I didn't put some of the freshman in this, but I think Bosa will be in the 2 deep. I think Bennett is going to slide into DT as we'll have a nice 3 man rotation with him, diesel and Schutt....Hale will fill the Goebel role and provide nice depth on the interior. The 3 freshman will all provide nice depth. Oh yeah, Hankins is gone imo. I really hope some guys step up at LB, I hope like hell Grant has the light turn on, b/c MLB is a big question mark right now. I think Roby stays 1 more year and cements himself as a top 10 pick in the 2014 draft. He and Grant will be some quality starters, and I think Reeves & Woodard are the backups. Safety should be experienced, I just hope they learn how to wrap up when they tackle. After Bryant & Barnett leave, it seems like we have a big hole there, so the situation is wide open for Vonn Bell to hopefully come on down.
Collectively, the commenters in this thread seem to have the likely depth chart scenarios pretty well covered.
I'd just add that sometimes relatively unheralded guys will have monster offseasons and spring practices and thus, seemingly out of nowhere, will rocket up the depth chart (wasn't Will Smith like that between his frosh and sophomore seasons?).
Maybe someone like . . . DL: Chris Carter, Pittman, S. Miller, JT Moore, or Hale; LB: Crowell or Luke Roberts; OL: J. Boren, Farris, or D. Baldwin; WR: M. Thomas, Epitropoulos, or V. Reed?
No matter what, the DBs will be loaded with talent. I would love for Roby to come back, but the talent level in the secondary will be sick either way.
I submitted this on another forum over a month ago, so I'm just copying it here.
I might actually put Schutt before Hale now, and it may be interesting to see where Jamal Marcus ends up.
Hill could challenge for some time at DT, kid is a monster. Could see Bosa getting a few reps off the edge as well, similar to Spence this year. Also could see Burrows in the two deep if he moves to safety, with Bogard playing star. Woodard could push reeves and Murray for the two deep as well. Gonna be some serious position battles next year on defense. Competition breeds excellence
Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite
O'Connor and Crowell are both gone.
Downvote for stating facts?
Was not me who downvoted, however this post was made long before the news of those 2 leaving the program came to light
Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite
I thing that a guarantee fewer block punts.
Do you guys want to bring this thread back to life post-signing day?
"A guy from Ohio can make it in life if he works hard enough." - Wayne Woodrow Hayes
I see at least one of the freshman WR's starting. Thinking one of Clark. Jalin or Corey smith start.
Urban complained of a lack of playmakers this year and outside of Braxton I really didn't see any homerun threats. I could see major playing time by some of the new guys who are burners.
Here's my 2-deep-ish take for 2013:
QB: Miller / Guiton
RB: Carlos Hyde / Rod Smith / Brionte Dunn
Slot-Back: Jordan Hall / Jalin Marshall / Dontre Wilson
WR: Devin Smith / Mike Thomas
WR: Evan Spencer / Corey Smith
Slot WR: Corey Brown / Chris Fields / James Clark
TE: Heuerman / Vannett / Baugh
LT: Mewhort / Dodson
LG: Norwell / Farris
C: Linsley / Boren
RG: Hall / Underwood
LT: Decker / Lisle
Rush End: Noah Spence / Steve Miller / Tyquan Lewis
DT: Adolphus Washington / Joel Hale
DT: Tommy Schutt / Billy Price
Strong End: Michael Bennett / Se'Von Pittman / Joey Bosa
WLB: Ryan Shazier / Trey Johnson
MLB: Curtis Grant / Camren Williams / Mike Mitchell
SLB: Joshua Perry / David Perkins
CB: Bradley Roby / Eli Apple / Najee Murray
CB: Doran Grant / Armani Reeves / Cam Burrows
SS: Christian Bryant / Vonn Bell / Devan Bogard
FS: CJ Barnett / Corey Brown / Ron Tanner
Pretty good list.
I'd add on the Star, where I think Bogard will be seeing the most time, with Corey Brown and Vonn Bell as the backups.
"What we do in life echoes in eternity"
Not a huge X's and O's guy...so what's the difference between a slot BACK and slot WR?
I think that open CB spot is going to be a dog fight between a few guys.
slot back is more of what used to be called a scat back. Small running back that is more fast than power. slot wr is a slot wr.
Scat back doesn't work anymore because now these smaller RB are starting to be able to split out into the slot as a receiver where as they used to only catch the ball coming from only out of the backfield.
I think it actually works well too because now we have a QB-PP and QB-DT, TE-Y and TE-H. So now its slot-WR and slot-RB.
As much as I want him to earn the job and do what we all believe he can do...I think the MLB role will go to either Williams, Mitchell or Perry instead of Grant.
I'd also leap frog Corey Smith directly into the starting lineup with his experience and eligibility. I know that Urban will play the best player in each spot, and is not concerned with seniority, but I find it hard to believe he'd use a scholarship on a JUCO player unless he was ready to jump right in.
Aside from that, I think the Slot Back and Tight End roles will be a coin toss, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a freshman get the bulk of touches at either or both spots.
Nice list, though. Looks like a team that I'm proud to be a fan of.
Nice list only thing i would have done different is flip Perkins to WLB and Johnson to SLB on the two deep
nice list themo
think urb's gotta sit back with a nice shit grin, looking at all that talented DEPTH.
gotta get him stoked. But the guys has got to be going bonkers not to be able to see it all in motion right now!
knucklehead
Hard to disagree with most of TheMostBrian's list. In fact I agree with the offense 100%, but here's my take at the defense (which is tricky considering we run a hybrid defense)
QB: Miller / Guiton
RB: Carlos Hyde / Rod Smith / Brionte Dunn
Slot-Back: Jordan Hall / Jalin Marshall / Dontre Wilson
WR: Devin Smith / Mike Thomas
WR: Evan Spencer / Corey Smith
Slot WR: Corey Brown / Chris Fields / James Clark
TE: Heuerman / Vannett / Baugh
LT: Mewhort / Dodson
LG: Norwell / Farris
C: Linsley / Boren
RG: Hall / Underwood
RT: Decker / Lisle
WSDE: Noah Spence / Steve Miller / Se'Von Pittman - Pittman needs to show something. He doesn't have the body of a SSDE, so I moved him to the weak side.
DT: Michael Bennett / Joel Hale. Bennett is another guy who will likely be moving around on the line. I think Diesel Washington was very impressive at SSDE and would like to see him there instead of inside.
DT: Tommy Schutt / Billy Price
SSDE End: Adolphus Washington / Joey Bosa
WLB: Ryan Shazier / Trey Johnson
MLB: Curtis Grant / Camren Williams / Mike Mitchell - Who knows with Curtis Grant. I honestly think Cam Williams will get every chance to start come fall practice.
SLB: Joshua Perry / David Perkins
VIPER: Tyquan Lewis / Jamal Marcus
CB: Bradley Roby / Eli Apple / Najee Murray
CB: Doran Grant / Armani Reeves / Cam Burrows
SS: Christian Bryant / Devan Bogard
FS: CJ Barnett / Vonn Bell
I think you could throw Corey Brown/Chris Worley/Darren Lee/whoever into the STAR position considering we often go into the Nickel package against the spread or 4+Wr sets. We also saw it a lot last year with the LB injuries and if there are only 2 LB's deemed ready to start with the loss of Boren and Sabino, it wouldn't surprise me to see quite a bit of a STAR out there.
There is a lot of talent up front, but my goodness only Shazier and Bennett have significant playing time, and Bennett is borderline when you say "significant." Those guys have to come together quickly.
