If you are an NFL team and you have the #1 pick in the NFL draft, would you take Geno Smith?
His stats are better than RG3's at this point in the year..but is he as talented or have the pro potential RG3 had?
Do you think he is a product of a system and has bust written all over him?

I wouldn't but my Cleveland Browns will! Then the bust situation will come into play.....
Geno is pretty darn accurate but hasn't really faced any semblence of a pro defense. Did RG3 ever really face a great defense either tho? I thought I was sold on him after his texas performance. But then texas got shallacked today. I just don't know. I'd take him first round as of now...but not number one. He could elevate to number one if he picks apart Oklahoma or an SEC defense in a bowl game.
See Brandon Weeden
I think he is a drafted in the 7-14 range as the number two or three QB off the board. I think most teams see Matt Barkley and maybe Tyler Wilson, even though he hasn't done well so far, as better prospects.
I don't think Smith could be seen as being as good a prospect of Griffin right now--he has less of a track record, and isn't the same running threat.
As said above, he hasn't played a real D this season, but even taking that into account his numbers are hard to believe.
I see Barkley as a game manager at the NFL level, not a real star.
The best prospect this time around might be a defensive player, possibly Jarvis Jones.

Ditto on the Browns. They need linemen, CB and LB, but they'll refuse trade offers and go for yet another QB
Texas Tech can stop Geno Smith so far.... makes this question easy: NO!
I think Geno will be an incredibly accurate QB at the next level and usually that translates well. I think he and Barkley are the 2 top QB's but I like Barkely because he's been doing great things for 3-4 years and Geno kinda came on strong middle of last season.
Lamp, the browns need wr's as bad as we do.

Yike! Actually we need so much I forgot about the WR. Absolutely correct

No way he is a system QB.
Alright, so maybe we can now say the Texas Tech D might be a good D.
"System QB" is usually what people say to dismiss QBs like Case Keenum or Colt Brennan, who run up big numbers despite the lack of a traditional NFL arm or other physical gifts. But I don't think there's question about Smith's arm strength.

Yes...I would
I'm just happy to be here
Absolutely, in a heartbeat.
No.
Absolutely not. I dont think he is a first round pick.
nope
Depends on the team. I could see Philly doing it and it wouldn't be the worst pick in the world for them. Although they could try to use Vick for another couple years and then look for 1 of the 10 or so mobile QBs that are going to be going pro in the next year to 2. But Smith seems like a decent option, just maybe not quite can't miss like the 2 last year.
No way. I think you can get a better value, with higher upside later in round 1 or round 2, 3, or 4. Guys with high upside include Barkley, Wilson, Manuel.

I don't. Personally I don't like any of the QB's in the first round this year, but its the NFL so someone will take Geno and Barkely (at least) in the first. QB's ALWAYS get over drafted. I sort of like EJ Manuel as a project. He'll go higher than he should also, but if he's around in the third, I'd be cool with taking him then.
Geno doesn't strike me as a guy who changes the course of your franchise. That's what first round picks-first round QB's especially are supposed to do. His accuracy will get him into the first round but he's going to be a classic case of NFL teams over reaching on QB's-Locker, Ponder, and Tannehill are recent examples of third round talent\project players going in the first 32 because they are QB's.
You know who else isn't a first rounder? Nahhhh I'll save my I told you so's for another time.
4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off
Can't see taking a gamble with a 1st round pick. Especially at the QB position.
I posted a link a while back with an article which broke down pass distributions for QBs this past year. Geno Smith threw 33% of his passes behind the line of scrimage (far outpacing anybody else). The majority of his passes were within 10 yards. While he completed deep passes, he was spotty on intermediate throws.
Here's what the guys at Football Study Hall had to say:
Did Geno Smith silence any of that doubt during the combine and pro day? I think high first round would be a reach, but he could do well in the right system.
He won't go to KC at #1, that is for sure. I hope he goes #1 though because that means my Chiefs traded out and got more picks!
I say KC takes Joekel at #1 or trade out. I would love for Star Lotulelei but don't think it will happen unless they trade down and he is there.
EDIT: What is with rehashing all these old posts? At least there are new ones of the same topics being created.
On your edit, I was wondering the same thing. Seems to be a ton of rehashing going on. I like to venture into old threads every now and again and read some things that are seemingly funny now when you read what some of us would post several months ago, but I don't feel like commenting as it's something that we've moved on from. Barbaro has suffered enough...
I'd stay away from him. I think when you put him up against better defenses, his ability to process the game drastically decreased. There's a reason that they went onto go 2-6 after their great start...you can't play Marshall and James Madison every week. Also, and I'm just generalizing here as it has been awhile since I last saw him play, it seems like many of his passes were short 5-10 yard slant routes to some incredibly speedy and shifty WR's that would take it to the house from there. Those plays happen so fast that he doesn't have to process what's actually going on; that won't happen in the NFL. Those plays aren't open like that often and if he can't decipher what the defense is doing each and every play, you're going to see the reemergence of Vince Young or Jamarcus Russell - very athletic and talented, but unable to grasp the speed of the game.
No QB this year is anything more than a late 1st rounder. I wouldn't take a flier on anyone if it was me.

Oh please god no.......
If he miraculously falls to the 3rd round or we somehow pick up a second round pick I wouldn't mind taking him, but if we draft Geno in round one it may very well be the worst pick in franchise history. Gimme Milliner opposite Haden with that 6th pick please

Wouldn't take him with the first pick of the second round. (My perspective as a browns fan).

Dana Holgerson QBs have been very unsuccessful in the NFL. A case could be made that NFL teams haven't utilized these QBs correctly (see Shurmur, Pat). I'd be shocked if Geno Smith goes #1 overall.
This is the year that I would trade if I had the #1 overall.
Thumbs up for the Browns waiting another first rounder on a QB that won't work out. Would love another good laugh.
