What is a Troll?

Honest question, what is a troll that I hear alot of people on here talk about?

Troll - One who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument.

One could infer from that definition that you are trolling.

To provide an example if you are truly naive I would ask:

Why do people ask questions that can easily be answered by a google search when they are obviously on the internet to pose said question in the first place?

Got it thanks but my intentions were not to provoke controversy so I'd think by definition I am not Trolling?

A troll, to me, is someone that visits a site with the intent to get people fired up.

Usually by one of the following methods:

An overused example of prior bad performance - See National Championship 2006/2007

False information - See everything from Eagle_Eye :-)

Lack of intelligent responses - i.e.. "Buckeyes Suck!"

Regurgitation of some media tidbit that they feel the need to repeat - See anything from ESPN.

Fortune-telling without fact - i.e.. "You're gonna lose - Because Buckeyes Suck!!"

Mostly just an immature OSU hater. (M Man and Hail do not fall into this category because they are quite mature and secretly love the Buckeyes - They are just here for comic relief) :-)

My point was, with the new buckeye leaf system, it seems like forum posts are being created for the sake or earning.  Rather than meaningful content, we are now being posed questions that can be answered via a simple google search or comments that contribute little to nothing.  If you decide that is not for you, there is a section of the forums for non football related content.

There is no easy way to combat posts for the sake of earning, but my suggestion would be to implement a daily cap of leaves that can be earned so that more posts are on topic and relevant.

@BUCKPOCALYPSE - Spoken like a man with 36 stickers. JK

This really isn't a bad topic to have on here. There are new people to Blogs and to the Buckeyes every day. The 11w Terminology page leaves this definition off the list for some reason. Nothing wrong with having a little non-football fun. (though posting in a non-"football" forum may have been a better choice for this post)

If he wanted to create a post for the sake of earning he would have been better off making another Timmons thread and as long as he spoke positively about him WayCracken would have upvoted every post he's ever had

Frankly I am not concerned with anything of that nature.  I don't care to up vote or down vote anyone.  I have come here for the past ~two years for meaningful discussion and information about the OSU football and basketball programs.  What I have seen though is the slow deterioration of an informed community to a hippie commune afraid to say anything contradictory and begging for people to like them and up vote them more often than not.

This is the same mentality that caused me to migrate from Scout to Theozone to Elevenwarriors but something tells me I may be looking elsewhere for intelligent discussion in the future.

I am not, however negatively commenting on site content.  It is top notch, and has gotten increasingly better over the past several months.  For that, I applaud the 11W staff.

Hmmm....

You know, you don't have to read the forums, or comment on them. The fact that some of us like a little break between "Braxton for Heisman" and "Our defense has been bad", and enjoy being [trying to be] witty, does not make us "hippies".

Smile dude - Football is supposed to be fun. Otherwise we'd be synchronized swimming fans. (I admit it though - I watched it during the Olympics)

Seems like a troll is someone who states something about a team another person likes and doesn't agree with.  I was called a troll by Indiana fans for saying they'll be knocked out of the NCAA bball tourney this yr in the Sweet 16, and for saying Zeller looks like a few different species of bird.  Which 1 is an opinion and the other is fact.  No trolling.  SO, basically whenever I see someone else in a message board call someone a troll it is usually because that person the "troll", says something bad about the other persons team.

However, if they're obnoxious and continually cut and paste something and keep posting it... then yes, I'd consider that a "troll"

Buckpocalypse: point taken. The concerns you raise are always lurking when a site like 11W goes from being somewhat of a hidden gem to a hugely popular site. That said . . .

1. Besides your pointed comments on this thread, I cannot recall you making any other bold, audacious comments at 11W (maybe I just missed them). I think you're right, commenters who are willing to take some downvotes in order to generate robust, even contentious, discussions can add more flavor, intellectual depth, and topical interest. As long as the commenter stays within the lines, of course, we should urge folks here to not be so cautious all the time. But your best bet is to lead by example, not lecture others. As my writing tutor used to advise me, "Show, don't tell!"

2. My impression is that the upvoting/downvoting has reduced the amount of petty bickering in the comment threads, especially from me. And, obviously, petty bickering can stiffle good, meaningful discussions just as quickly, if not faster than, cautious comments designed to plead for upvotes.

I come here because I enjoy it.  I could not tell you the last skull session I missed.  I too enjoy the banter and witty comments.  There are a lot of great posters with a lot to offer.  I know though, talking to other frequent visitors of this site that there has been a noticeable increase in forum posts and decline in quality since the institution of buckeye leaves.

One of my favorite posters happens to be Waycraken.  Whether or not I agree with what he says, he is passionate, informed, and offers first hand insights that I can not get from the staff.

Maybe I am just being picky.  Maybe I didn't get enough sleep.  Maybe I just want a little discretion in what one considers a football forum related topic or an "other" topic.  Probably I should just shut up.

^^^warning the above comment is a joke. See - I thought Johnblairs comment was funny so I took it a step further & said Brady Hoke is always a troll. That's all - a harmless joke - just some levity on my favorite OSU site. No need for anyone to get upset.

Troll actually is derivative from the word Trolling which is what people do when they cast out a line to catch fish. On the internet, that is a numbskull that throws out a comment intentionally to provoke a response. This is very similar to casting a line and waiting for something to bite. They likely don't believe in what they are saying and their pure intention is to light a fire under your ass. It is easier to associate the act of trolling to a person, example being a bridge troll, than that of a an actual action. (If that makes sense? I am probably diving to deep into geekdom right now.)

@Bucksfan, the answer is typically downvote, unless it adds to the conversation.

The commenting policy had this to say:

DISREGARD TROLLING, ACQUIRE CURRENCY

We enjoy friendly banter with fans of other programs. Even the fans of the cesspit located 45 miles west of Detroit. Feel free to back your school with all of the pride you're accustomed to, but know your audience. Anything that even slightly resembles a trolling attempt will lead to a quick ban and the original comment being changed to "HURR DURR", "I LIKE PONIES" or any of a number of things.

Likewise, you're encouraged to avoid feeding the trolls. If the comment is that incendiary, it will be dealt with soon, so you can save your breath.

The best way to address a troll is not to respond to them. Let them stir in their own bitter-sauce. The act of downvoting is meant to discourage mistreatment of others. At least that is my understanding. Up vote things that are informative, witty, helpful, and contribute to the betterment of the community.

Now... back to reading football related posts and forums. Enjoy your day!
