My guess is Bobby Petrino. He has ties to both the state and the conference, and we all know Kentucky doesn't shy away from controversial hires.
This would be a way for Petrino to remain in a high profile conference, with a chance to enliven a moribund football program, but also do it with relatively little pressure. It also gives UK a big name coach with a track record for big turnarounds like this.
Tressel's penalty that would follow him as a result of the "show cause" is only a five game suspension. That's the dirty little secret no one knows. If he takes a job anywhere, he has to sit out the first five games and the bowl game in his first year if they make one have you seen UK? They're not going bowling). Sure, there would be additional NCAA cavity searches every six months for the remaining years, but by all accounts Tress was one of the cleaner coaches in college football, tatgate aside.
If you're UK, that's a no brainer IMHO. The only question would be, is Tressel interested? I'd find it hard to believe, but then again you never know.
A show cause doesn't mean he's banned from coaching for 5 years. A school can hire him. But if they do during the 5 years both him and the school have to jump through multiple NCAA hoops with the Committee for Infractions and the school could be penalized for hiring him as he would take his sanctions with him to the new school (suspended games, bowl ban, etc.)
Tressel to Kentucky sounds like just a rumor. With Joke Phillips more than likely on his way out, I wouldn't be surprised to hear several people rumored for the job.
Tenn, I realize a show cause doesn't mean he's banned from coaching, but it seems unlikely he would return to coaching college football so soon. I suppose a school that is desperate for a good coach might be willing to jump through the hoops.
UK won't hire Tressel! Come on. They won't pay what it would take to get him to coach again. You think he would go for peanuts just to do it? No!
Not to mention Tressel has huge roots in Ohio. If he were to coach a school, it would be in Ohio!
Petrino won't go to UK either! They saw what happened at Louisville and they saw who he is. He ruins programs! You can brush off infractions and look over certain things. Killing two programs when they were on a rise (not to mention leaving a Dear John letter at Atlanta)! UK isn't that dumb!
Honestly, he may not even have to jump through major hoops. Remember, the bowl ban and additional scholarship reductions were the result of DiGeronimo, with which Tress had nothing to do with. They could very easily argue that he need only serve his penalty and probation. And if the bowl ban follows for a year, so what? It's not like UK goes to bowls every year, or that they'd be sacrificing a ton of money from a big time bowl. This would actually be a home run move for UK, but I doubt it happens. Look, UK hired the shadiest basketball coach in the land. It's pretty evident they don't give a damn about public perception. I believe they would absolutely hire Tressel if the Vest was interested.
I would love to see Tress coach again, but I'm not sure I can see him in a blue sweatervest. The thought of it makes me want to vomit.
Per my insider source, may or may not be the same as Drewbuckeye's, Tressel has no desire to coach again. Has more interest in being a fullonrapist. I mean philanthropist.
Timing is not right for Tressel and UK wouldn't be the job, anyway. It wouldn't suprise me to see Tress coach someplace small again. I don't think he needs his ego stroked as much as other coaches. Also, I have no problem seeing Petrino take the UK job; can't kill a program that's already dead. He could have them scoring 40+ points (even if they're giving up 50) in a hurry.
Bass - I just put that info out because many are under the impression that it means he cannot be hired during his show-cause. I wasn't so much directing it at you, but at the OP which said he had thought he had a "5 year ban".
I actually think UK would be a great fit for him. He could recruit good talent for defense to UK and they may actually enjoy some real success. They have never attracted great defensive players. In one of their "good" years Florida still hung 63 up on them. He could actually make Kentucky compete in that conference. They wouldn't win the whole thing or anything, but I bet they'd get more than 1 or 2 conference wins per year.
If Tress did go and Heacock followed him, I could see UK winning the SEC East within four years. Come to think of it, it is pretty interesting that Heacock hasn't gone anywhere yet.
I would be stunned, if and when Tressel decides to coach again, to see him interested in a job at a school that clearly treats football as a second class citizen. This is a guy who, whether you like it or not (and I do), is one of the greatest winners in college football over the past 25 years. Guys with multiple national titles, and who once had tremendous success at one of the top 5 programs in college football history, typically do not start over at a place like UK. Kentucky is, IMO, a stepping stone job for young up and comers. If you can win there the big boys will be fighting over you. Tressel has nothing to prove. If a major job opens up and he makes it known that he would be interested I'm sure he would immediately go to the top of the Potential candidate list... assuming the Show Cause has expired or is close to expiring.
Jim Tressell may not ever coach college football again...unless the team is Savannah State or a program similar to that. Meaning in a program in absolute destitute...UK could be a good choice though;-)

I believe UK could be a nice fit. UK is better suited for the Rich Brooks JimTressell types than young up and comers. YUAC are better suited in less competitive leagues and at UK it would most likely be a better retirement position meaning (take on a different type of challenge) win 7-8 games and be absolutely loved. Lower stress. Perfect for Tressell
Sorry Humble but UK will probably never win the SECEast! They haven't beaten Florida in 28 years let alone win the east! I don't think even Tressel with Petrino as his OC and Heacock as his DC could win that.
Plus, UK is sooooo cheap when it comes to football! They don't care. Just think about this: UK spent $350,000 on the basketball team introduction a few weeks ago! UK spent that on the football program ALL YEAR!
Edit: Correction, they spent $300,000 on the LIGHTS! More than they spent on football recruiting total!
Tressel knows better and I think Petrino would even say no too! Kentucky is a basketball school and they have no desire to change.
I am a uk fan as well as the bucks and the rumors are petrino would be the first choice but some have mentioned tress as well. @squirrelmaster that is not true. They have boosters that pay for a lot of the recruiting. In fact a reporter asked joker about that at this weeks presser and he said the coaches have never had to worry about money for recruiting.
Never worry about money but that doesn't mean they actually get enough. UK's budget I am sure is nowhere close to what OSU spends on football. Come on! Tressel goes from having a multi-million dollar program at his disposal and he would be satisfied with UK's budget? Those boosters are basketball boosters! They care about the national champion basketball program. Not the SEC bottom dwellers in football. Don't piss in my coffee and tell me it adds flavor! Tressel and Petrino would both have an issue with the football budget. Joker just doesn't know better.
If you were right OSU Bucks, then why are all the in-state top recruits either going out of state or to Louisville who is in the Big East? UK is an SEC school. They should have no problem getting the in-state recruits like Barker and Quick if they spent even half the money OSU and Louisville does. Neither of those 2 even mention UK as a possibility. UK can't get 4* stars at all. They have had 3 in the past 3 years! 2 are from right in Lexington!
Tressel won't change that and neither would Petrino. They need to go after someone like Strong who is an OC or DC right now at a big program and they need to actually throw money at the guy! This Kentucky pipedream of a football program needs to stop! They own basketball. Stick with that and shower all that money on Cal. Because if they want Tressel or Petrino, they will have to pay them as much as Cal or close to it. Cal won't like that and he will hightail it to the NBA after he leaves the program in trouble. Cal has no loyalty and Petrino would split on UK the second another team comes calling! That would be the biggest mistake UK could ever do!
Been in Lexington 10 yrs now.
This is the states university. It's a college town in a state with no professional sports. People here still support football, but the university spends no money on the program. The last 2 major projects were the Craft center for the basketball players to have private practice facilities. They recently built the new Wildcat (COAL) Lodge for the basketball team. Wonder where the extra money for that came from.........?
Recruiting football here is brutal as well. Little in state talent. Then have too compete against the other SEC schools who know it's a basketball school first. They end up with a bunch of 2*3* recruits from Georgia and Ohio.
I would love to see Tressel at UK so anytime I went to a game I could rock my OSU gear. I just don't see it happening tho IMO. There are to many draw backs to building a consistent winning progam. Unless Tress thinks the Music City Bowl is Ok every year. The fan base is fine with any bowl game.
People are saying that I'm an alcoholic, and that's not true, because I only drink when I work, and I'm a workaholic.

If Tressel decides to coach again, I hope he chooses to stay in Ohio. While none of the schools are OSU, there are still quality programs in Ohio that Tressel could certainly help.
@ tennbuckeye gruden gets paid the same amount with working half the hrs in the pressbox no way does he come out of that to coach a team like the browns... now if they went after jay gruden i could maybe see that
I live here in Lexington, KY. This football team is in shambles....While Joker Phillip's days are numbered, I can't imagine any scenario involving Tressel here. This team is beyond rebuilding, as they've experimented with four quarterbacks this season, get pushed aside for UK Basketball, have very few in-state recruits who are above 3-star potential, and have a horribly difficult schedule. Heck, the athletic department spent more on the basketball Midnight Madness than they did on football recruiting.
Edit: @Bucktuckian. Didn't read your post till I sent mine. Yeah, I pretty much said the same thing as you regarding the state of KY football.
If this happens, I will be forced to burn all of my sweater vest tees and urinate on the ashes. If this happens I will drive from Arizona to Ohio and prevent this traveshamockery from ever occurring, by latching on to JT's leg and forcing him into an alternate universe machine that I'm now charged with creating for this event. I'd be doing this for the good of JT. I don't want him to burst into flames when John crapilari shakes his hand.
@squirrel those recruits don't consider uk because joker is terrible and has led the program straight to the ground after brooks brought some life in it. Also they did get a big recruit by the name of pat towles last year and he will be a stud.
I would like to see Tress at UK. It would be a challenge to bring the program up to respectable, and I think Tress has what it takes to make UK competitive. Tress was a very good recruiter while at OSU, but I doubt that he could bring in that kind of talent initially. His next coaching job is probably going to be his last hurrah and it would give him a great sense of pride to develop a program at a college like UK.
Honestly, Rich Brooks did have the program in the best shape it's been in in my lifetime. Kentucky is always in the conversation for kids from Highlands . If Brooks would of still been the coach and the program were still in good shape I'd bet that Collinsworth's kid would of ended up in Lexington. Also, with a solid coach they would probaby land players like Timmons in state. Good at football or not, people in Kentucky like UK so much that if a kid is a decent prospect and lives in KY, USUALLY UK is on their list at least. Especially, if they go to school outside of Louisville.
He has a 5-year Show Cause penalty. I don't think he'll be coaching college football anytime soon...

Most likely the hoops would be jumped prior to hiring. It would have been 2 years of the 5 required by that point correct?

No offense to Kentucky, but the only way I see Petrino going there is if Auburn or Tennessee or some other bigger program doesn't come calling.
