If true, it's really telling if your fullback is starting over such a highly touted recruit like Grant. I'm not sure where you saw that though.
Edit: I just did a quick search of Zach Boren within the last hour and it brought up rumors/tweets citing Tim May of the dispatch that he is hearing Boren to start at MLB. So who knows.
With Sabino out, are they moving Storm or Perry to his spot? Hard to imagine 2 new starters in the LB unit, risking communication problems, when by all accounts OSU has had a hard time stopping the kind of passing offense Indiana is likely to show us. I'd be more inclined to believe OSU going nickel coverage, for the most part, before they throw in a new LB to the mix.
If true, maybe Boren will be beastly and make us all wonder why he wasn't put there in 2009. A.J. Hawk was supposed to be one helluva fullback.
Im with u Broseph i thought it was some kind of joke until one of the bigtime insider guys over at the scout insider forums confirmed it honestly my thought are:
-we really are hurting that bad at linebacker bc of injuries and have absolutely 0 confidence in grant and younger guys
-Urban could be doing this as a one time thing where hes rewarding Zach for being a great leader this year to have him play his fav position for 1 game something to the effect of "if u show me you can meet my expectations i will reward you and let you hit people even more"
-Urban using this as another motivator at the sametime to show the younger guys you better step it up or even fullbacks can jump you on the depth chart no excuses type of deal
hell it could be any one of those or even a combo of all three but all i know is that tomorrow nights game just got a bit more interesting for me as i usually just watch the d-line closely now ill just be watching Boren if true
Um, unless I've missed something, I'm pretty sure the plan is to play nickel most of the game, meaning Shazier and Klein are starting. Perry will be the third LB if/when we're in base. I love me some Boren, but there's no way he starts at Mike over Storm and Curtis (both of whom have started games this season).
Edit: I'm slightly panicking now...did something go out that Shazier isn't playing?
Thanks Ross appreciate your work and any info you could provide would be fantastic as im not quite sure how to take/understand the move as im sure other fans do to
"Starting" LB seems really unlikely to me based on the fact that I'd assume he's had very little if any practice time at LB this week (or ever in college, though there were rumors he joked a lot w/Fickell and Vrabel last year about wanting to get in at LB)--but what do I know? I could see him as a back-up to add depth or give Klein a breather assuming Perry or Williams didn't sub in for him.
He was a pretty solid LB in high school. He has tremendous football instincts. Something that I can't say for some of the other guys listed as LB's on the roster.
i wouldnt mind seeing pretty much anyone get a shot.... im only 27 but ive never seen tosu in such bad shape at mlb.... i dont understand how the stud mlbs wouldnt commit i mean it wont be that hard to take a job someone just needs to come play ball
I never thought I'd see the day when OSU took a fullback and made him the starting linebacker 1/2way through a year, after hardly any practice time at the position. Whoever coached the LBers last year and recruited the 2008, 2009 and 2010 Lbers may need re-evaluated, if still on staff.
It's only natural to question Boren's reaction to keys, pass coverage responsibility, tackling ability/practice, defensive audible recognition/response.
Does anybody have any source on this? TOS started the rumor by saying Tim May reported this, but I'm not seeing any tweets, articles, or anything else from Tim May that would indicate he reported this. Seems fishy to me.
^^ I don't really know. I will say if Boren does start at LB, but plays lights out, this becomes less a worrisome situation and turns into stroke of genius.
The difference between Gamble going from offense to defense, imo, is that defense can be run to help a cornerback..... double coverage, safety help, and so forth. However most defensive front sevens are designed and ran to funnel things to the LBers. LBers are to be the vacuum cleaners & sweep em up. It's hard for me to imagine how the defense could be tweaked to help a LBer perform, unless calling blitzes on most plays.
If this is true, our LB recruits should be watering at the mouth. Mitchell, Mcmillian, Hearns and Johnson should be jumping at the chance to come here. FB starting at MLB? This might work out well both ways for OSU. Boren is a hidden gem at MLB and recruits line up to commit at LB!
This is actually A. Brilliant. B. A test to see if I'm actually awake. C. April 1st. Must...have...more...coffee. Up is down, left is right, Boren is linebacker. This does not compute...This does not compute.

IF this happens call me a bit concerned about the Buckeye defense.....personally I'm a bit concerned about this game....indiana will put up points and move the ball...and why wouldn't they...Ohio State can't stop teams.
I am a huge Zack Boren fan but are you telling me that he is a better option than Klein and Grant? Kind of a slap in the face to Klein/Grant and I could see them being pretty pissed that Urban is taking this route. Anyone else see this angle?

Yeah, I really don't get this one. What is the gain here? I see no logic in Playing Boren over any of the linebackers including freshmen. However, I hope I'm just as correct on this as I was on my call of Texas over Oklahoma!

I'm guessing the fact that this is Indiana is why he is getting a shot. Let him have a shot, I mean can he be that much worse than Grant or Klein. I think Urban is tossing him a bone because he has earned an opportunity to show what he's got at LB, even if it doesn't work out.
This game will tell us where our defense is at. Plain and simple. If IU can put up points against us, November 24th could be a day to forget.
Oh they'll put up points against us..I'm pretty sure of that. Pretty much every team has been able to get points against us this year. We haven't shown the ability to shut a team out or hold them to under 10.
With Sabino out, Shazier looking pretty banged up in the game last week, and Williams not even making the trip, perhaps as BJ Mullen said, they need a seasoned leader in there, and figure why not? Gotta believe Boren is pumped, he'll whip those guys into a lather. Would be nice to see some LBs doing the Superman/Heart/fired up Fragel breaking the chair move tonight.

I would really be surprised. I think it will be Storm and Josh Perry.
I love the Boren boys! Tough as nails.

I would love to see Boren play.. not sure how well he would do but I would assume we will be playing majority of a nickel base against Indiana.

We're hearing the same thing...we're digging into it as we speak to give everyone the full story...
Oh man...he is a beast but you gotta wonder if he knows the defense at all. I'm starting to get worried

Meyer and Fickell have said we need a leader at MLB, who better than Zach Boren?
Favorite Buckeye: Obviously BJ Mullens

It will be interesting.
So........Fickell?

LBers either have IT, or they don't.

I know that when boren meets a fullback in the hole he won't b going backwards a Ja grant and Klein

If ZB plays LB who fills his role on offense, or does ZB go 2 ways ?
Ths is going way back, but I think something similar happened when Woody was coach -- he converted a linebacker to fullback (Bruce Elia)

Is he still going to see time today on offense? Is there another #44 on the squad?

I cant see him as more than a run stuffer in obvious running situation plugging holes. It is very hard to transition to a spot like that.
