I'm a 2007 OSU grad, and am from MA. So, the 2001 season pre-dates me a bit. But, JT endeared himself to the OSU faithful pretty quickly with his introductory speech at the UM-OSU basketball game. I get the prevailing sense (and I could be wrong) that while we find it pretty damn cool that UFM is coaching OSU, he's not really "our" coach yet. Obviously, wins like MSU and hopefully a win against Nebraska go a long way towards people letting their guards down. Again, I could be wrong, but it's kind of how I feel at this point.

He was my coach AT Ohio State if Tressel ever retired. Literally told my buddies in ATL that it would happen in 2008. The emotion he displayed saturday is as Scarlet and Grey as it comes.
Love the guy.
Maybe the demeanor and his actions vary from tress, and that I would agree with, but I think Urban 'Gets it', which is the most important thing for a new coach coming in. In respect to that, both coaches showed that they 'Get it' it different ways, but with Urbans ties to Ohio State, i think this is the perfect fit.
I know you are not saying that Urban does not belong or you are questioning his hiring. Not sure if I adequately or fully offered a correct response, but think he is 'ours' and showed it in a different way, you know?
Don't get me wrong; I too love, love, love the new attitude and demeanor that Urbz has brought to the program (it's what many fans, including myself, were clamoring for in the waning days of the JT era). Also, I'm not questioning his roots as an "Ohio boy". I guess I'm still trying to wrap my mind around all of this. The ESPN all-access program also had the feel of everyone in the program trying to get a feel for each other.
Side note: I'm not a die hard, blind JT loyalist.
I understand what you mean. He felt like a substitute for the first few games. "Is he really our coach?" "Does he still have the same fire and passion as before?" Well, after seeing him get all fired up at MSU he really has become "Our Coach". He's a Buckeye and always has been. I'm glad he is on our sidelines and look forward to a very long tenure. I love/d Tress, but I was beginning to think it was time for a change. Urban fits now like a glove.
I think the feeling will fully set in after we woop scUM's ass.
"if irony were made of strawberries, we' d all be drinking a lot of smoothies right now."
I think we have the benefit of hindsight now which makes it seem like he was our guy from the start. Certainly, that speech charged up the fans, but that first season was ugly. He beat Michigan though and kept his word. Then he won a national championship and that was it, he could do no wrong.
Urban has said a lot of the right things, and pushed the right buttons. He's been a monster on the recruiting trail and that alone has bought him a lot of praise with the fanbase. If this team finds a way to make it to 12-0, WOW will he ever endear himself to Ohio State fans. The team has already been a pleasant surprise for many, and we are hearing how much people love this team. Even without going undefeated if they pull of double digit wins (1 against TTUN) well I think Urban will certainly be "our coach".
hes the best coach in college football.... yes im lookin at you saban!! seriously though hes won everywhere and he'll win here. when he gets all of his guys in, plus brax as a senior i think he will be ready for nicholas of the saban's. bama's talent on the offensive line is unreal its goin to take urbs a couple of yrs b4 hes ready for bama.
mark may wins douchebag of the year... again
need to see how he handles Michigan week.....being around Tress during my time at OSU I got an up close and personal look at how things were done....Woody would have been proud....Urban needs to win that game badly and prepare for that game like no other
100% agree Alex. I would expect his singular, razor sharp intensity to be ratched up a couple of notches. But, this isn't a big SEC divisional game; it's OSU-Michigan. We'll find out soon enough.
I never cared for Tressel, personally. I appreciated what he did, but his coaching style was always too conservative for my liking. On the rare occasion that he took chances, they blew my mind and I had no idea what he was trying to do. Personality-wise he struck me as too self-righteous (this is for his entire tenure, prior to the scandal). Meyer is perfect for my sensibilities.
if i had to chose a coach and the choices was jt and urb, i would not hesitate one millisecond in choosing urban. however, jt did a very good job of coaching.
I get where you're coming from guys, but at the same time, let's talk if Meyer is 106-22 with 5 BCS wins, 8 BCS game appearances, 1 national championship (3 NC appearances), and 7 Big Ten titles in 10 years at Ohio State....like his style or not, all JT did was win in Columbus
i tilte in three tries, versus 2 titles in two tries?
I dunno he's our coach and I like his intensity..but the guy still comes off a bit douchey and shady to me.
Run_Fido's favorite word is strawman.
I loved what Tressel brought as much off the field as on. However as soon as the scandal broke I expected Urban to be our coach. I have defended the team on here when everyone was getting all worked up about our poor early season performances. I believe we have a great and intense coaching staff and I never had a doubt that we will step up when needed. Bad games will happen, but if we can't have Tress then Meyer was the ONLY other guy I would've easily accepted! That said my wife hates him. Lol.
I think, though, Meyer has shown he takes Rivalry games very seriously. Look, we may say it's just another SEC division game, but Tennessee and Georgia are definitely rivalry games for Florida, and he dominated those games. I'm not suggesting they are equal footing with The Game, but those are definitely extremely important games for those teams. When I was a kid, Florida/Tennessee was INTENSE. They still don't like eachother whether Tennessee has been bad or not.
My point is, he gets what big games mean and how important they are to win. I would be SHOCKED if this team comes out for that game and looks unprepared or plays flat.
true meyer isnt god, but jt and his offense bored the heck out of me. there were times i had to quit watching when the buckeyes went on offense, i could pick the play 75% of the time before they ran it, couldnt wait to see the defense get back on the field. however jt got positive results most of the time. but still, urban or jt? if i had to pick one, it is urban. i am not butt hurt just because urbans' gators pounded our buckeyes, i think some buckeye fans are still butt hurt yet today, and thats their right to feel that way.
I don't know about UFM being "our" coach but he certainly is "my" coach. JT won't be forgotten but I'm certainly glad things turned out the way they did. I was crushed when Woodrow got canned, pissed the way Bruce got run out of town, and happy that Coop left.
different situations. Tressel came in on the coat tails of Cooper who couldn't beat UM to save his live. We were all ready for a change and tired of not winning against UM let alone a NC. Tressel endeared us with his speech knowing full well "win against UM and you are a made man". At that time he didn't even need to win a NC for us to like him.
Urban comes in behind the record previously stated by Alex and the first bit of turmoil this University had seen in a long time. Throw in his previous resume and high, high expectations are in play. Urban won't be endeared as easily. It may take more than an UM win to get the fans on board. NC or bust has been the motto over the past decade!
in truth, he has already won me over! I don't care about wins and titles. The guy came in during some dark times and has already brought this team back to near contention. I truly believe he continues to have his second year success and wins a NC in 2013. Quite possibly in undefeated fashion too!
i already am on board the urban train. have been since the day he was hired. count me as one fan who is endeared with coach urban, from the very first day.
Is this season, and/or Urban's perception for the year, dependent on beating Michigan? What if they lose? Does the fanbase turn on him?
Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!
~Bo Schembechler
@hail Urbans perception as our coach is dependent on beating Michigan. If OSU loses the game again this year it will be a very tough offseason.
win or lose to aacc this year, will not turn me against urban. there is a bigger prize involved eventually when he gets "his" players in place. i am on the urban train, all buckled in.
@HAIL, I don't think so.....did SCUM turn on RichRod after his first loss?
"I'm One Bad Buckeye, and I approve this message."
I don't think the fan base will turn on him no, but say they go and lose 5 games to end the year or something people won't be riding so high on the guy either. This team is still not where he wants it, but I have a feeling by November, kinks will be worked out and this will be a very good team. We wont need to worry about "if" we lose to Michigan!!!!
OSU will not lose to ttun.
One bad buckeye, they may not turn on him but let's say we're 10-1 or 11-0 going into the game, a loss isn't going to be easy to take at all imo
I really think, this will be Michigan's best shot at beating Ohio State for a while. Especially, with Braxton coming back for 2 more years and the talent on both sides of the ball coming to Columbus.
Strange thing is, even though I think this year is their best shot, I just don't think it will happen. I've said it many times before, with this senior class playing their last college game at the show and the big game coach Urban is, and the possibility of going 12-0 or getting to 10 wins by that point who knows what'll it be, and The Game being a by default Bowl game for the players, and The divisional championship that all the sudden Urban thinks is important, I just don't see Ohio State losing this year.
@HAIL - It really depends on the loss. If UM comes in and dominates us flat-out for sixty minutes, then you're going to see some of the fanbase really start to turn (this is what happened to Cooper--never preparing adequately and bringing awesome teams to the slaughterhouse against largely inferior UM squads). If we come out swinging in the first half, and then proceed to blow a big lead in the second half, you're going to see the same thing: albeit a bit more diminished than in the former scenario. Now, if we wind up falling just short of an epic comeback, that will look a lot better for Urban and his boys, same as if we wind up losing a very close game. It may be more heartbreaking, but I don't think we crucify the coach as much as we would if we get destroyed.
Granted, closer games lend themselves to heavier scrutiny, so there's the chance that a coaching blunder will look exceptionally bad, but Urban's proven to be an excellent game manager (especially with Fick's performance still relatively fresh on our minds) so I think that execution will be primarily seen as the culprit here.
Bottom line: this team's 3-2 right now with Fick at the helm, I think that as the season wears on fans will begin to notice this more and more.
BTAlbert took the words out of my mouth. Well done, Sir!
hail - that's a good question. I think due to the build-up and a lot of the 12-0 talk, some in the fanbase believe it's a forgone conclusion that OSU will beat UM. Honestly, my expectations are lower. I do think many will be disappointed if OSU does not beat UM this year. Really though, we are upset any year that we don't beat UM, and I hope fans won't turn on Meyer if we lose, but I think some could. I know the perception of Cooper was greatly hurt by not being able to beat UM, whereas much of the Tressel legacy in Columbus was a result of him dominating the series.
@One Bad Buckeye
I don't think RichRod was turned on because he never had our support, to begin with. Not to mention we were like 24 to 35 point dogs going into The Game in those 3 years. RichRod's major fail was that he didn't embrace any of the rivalries.
Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!
~Bo Schembechler
@Tenn, I think there are an irrational bunch of fans who 1)think Ohio State should always go undefeated though it's only happened 8 times in history and 4 where a tie wasn't involved and 2) Think wow Urban Meyer, we're never going to lose!!!!! With those 2 groups in mind, any loss Ohio State has will lead a vocal minority to question the hiring, whether Meyer is still the same coach he once was, etc etc etc.
I think as a whole though, a loss to Michigan this season doesn't result in a large percentage of the fan base turning on Meyer. The problem is, that minority will be loud, as they always are. Similar to the ones who kept saying Tressel should be fired literally minutes after a Rose Bowl berth was clinched.
You're spot on btalbert. IF we lose to TTUN (and I don't think we will), we will only need to wait minutes after the game for the inevitable statements of, "He's no Tress..." or something along those lines.
There is no coach in college football that I would prefer over Urban F. Meyer. It's hard not to be sold just looking at his accomplishments. Meyer was my "guy" well before the announcement of his hiring was made. People hate (envy) Urban just like they hate (envy) The Ohio State University. How many times have you heard "Urban Meyer is a cheater"? How about "tOSU are a bunch of cheaters"? "Meyer is shady"? "tOSU is shady"? They can say what they want, but the bottom line is that Meyer, and Ohio State, win. Meyer is a winner. It's a match made in hater heaven. So let the hate train roll, and have no doubt that our guy, Urban Meyer, will give them something to bitch about.
highwire: i could not have said what you said any better than you did.
LOL, btalbert, you're one of the few posters that I tend to agree w/ a majority of the time. So often, that irrational perspective you mention, has me just closing the browser... thx for the breath of common sense.
*applauds highwire*
I am 100% behind Meyer no matter what happens with The Game. He doesn't completely have what he needs to run his system yet. With that said, I believe we are better than scUM and should win this year. He is recruiting the best talent in the country and sparking interest around the program from elite players. The casual fan can't see that yet. When those kids choose the S&G and he puts his product on the field in the coming years, the fans will see it. He is doing very well with what he has. He will get every ounce of effort out of this team. I promise you he reminds them every day that each game is their bowl game and they are making a statement to the country. The past couple of seasons I was growing tired of Tresselball and was hoping for someone that would come in and want to run up the score and embarrass teams. Remember what Urban did to UGA the year after the dawgs beat them and danced around on the field? He beat them 49-10 the next year. I like the intensity and emotion you get from Urban which isn't something you saw with JT. JT did a lot of great things for the program, but it's time for people to move on and support OUR COACH that we have now.
If not Meyer, who?!?! I can't think of one other coach I would rather have. Who else is a great coach, has Ohio roots and totally understands the Big Ten and The Game? Pellini? (barf), Stoops (meh), Dantonio (gag). I just don't see anyone fitting in here better than Meyer. Only time will tell if he is the perfect fit, but so far I like what I see. The emotions displayed at the end of the game and after the game could not have been scripted. Have you ever seen a coach so fired up during the last few minutes of the game or so happy after a game? I have never seen that in my life and I sat there spellbound watching it unfold. So to answer your question, yes he is our coach! That does not take away from my love of JT. We used to go his games when he was at Youngstown State, so I have loved him for years and never once doubted he would be successful at OSU. Urban is an extention of JT in the way that they both have endeared me more and more to the Buckeyes.
Will I be mad if they lose to ttun? Of course, but I am not going to turn on him for losing a game in his first year. If he turns into Cooper, yes, he will have to go, but I don't see that happening.
i hope i dont get down graded for this, but alex, i want you to look at something
109-23 urbans record
229-79 tressel (never coached in sec)
7-1 bowl game record-urban
5-4 bowl game record-tressel
1 champ in 3 tries including 2 stompings- tress
2 championships in 2 tries
ufm was 14-1 against sec rivals, i think he'll do fine against mich
urbz was 65-15 at fla and dominated the sec
urbz crushed what i considered the best osu team osu ever put on the field
mark may wins douchebag of the year... again
Tressel was a liar, who played a good guy image to try and hide the fact he cheated his entire career, stop kissing his ass. My thoughts on meyer? perfect coach for the perfect program
lets not forget how horrible the big ten was and still is, urban = proven winner. tressel = choked in major games
Meyer is modern, aggressive, maybe a little smarmy. These are not qualities that endear one to the Midwestern sensibilities. I get what the original poster is saying. Everyone commenting here is a pretty hardcore football fan and so these are qualities they like, but i agree that overall there is a little bit of an unease about Meyer, a little bit of a wait and see attitude. Even certain posts on other topics have brushed on this. Urban's motivational techniques, his special guys, his "family", the leadership council. These are not mainstream comfortable ideas for a lot of people.
HEIR2AIR that's harsh dude. Knowing what we know now i still think most everyone would do it again (Tress era).
Let's just troll a little harder HEIR........
I know there's a game saturday, and my ass will be there.
HEIR is right guys...the man rigged raffles!!!!
Heir,
I won't downgrade youbut that is a horrible comment. First of all, won a NC! That means he isn't a choker. Maybe some of the players were chokers but Tressel proved himself plenty!Cheated his entire career? Prove it! You can't.
Agree about Urban though. Urban was tailor made for this program. Hail asked if we turn on him if they lose to UM. no. but it will leave much to be desired for most. Again, Tressel (heir's good friend) had quite the stellar record against UM. That is why he was loved so much when he took over for Cooper. Meyer will be tasked to at least equal that success and a bit more. It is a lot to ask for anyone because that game is not easy for either side despite the strength of the opponent. To do what Tressel did was amazing. He did have some help with RichRod and a lacking B1G and yes during the Pryor era he failed to perform a simple task and was caught cheating. Still a tough standard to hold up to and yet many feel Urban will exceed it.
I believe Meyer will do great things. If he just equals the good things Tressel did here, I think that would be plenty. OSU solidifies his hall of fame career, it won't define it!
Edit: changed my mind!
I was at OSU at the height of the Tress era. Hence, I have many incredible memories thanks to JT. However, I'll always look back on that era and think about what could have/should have been. Unlike Heir, I (like many people on 11W) understand that JT was human. Furthermore, outside of Coop, Bruce, JT, and UFM, NO ONE understands what it's like to be HC at OSU. That being said, part of me will always feel a hint of resentment towards JT for being one of the drivers behind a dark period in OSU history (football and institutionally).
Heir I don't totally disagree with everything you said. Truth is Tressel is probably somewhere between what you believe and what those who think the man could never do wrong and always had altruistic motives. I appreciate his time here and the era. It's over now though and we're on to hopefully the next great era. The Big 10 is still bad, and doesn't look like it will significantly improve in the next few years so Meyer will likely dominate the conference too.
Anyway, I loved the last decade minus the end, and it looks like the next decade is going to be awesome too.
well im entitled to my opinion, tressell always came off as slimey/secretive to me..i was never a big fan of him. I've been wanting him to be fired since our blowout loss to florida
Thank you Alex above...as I love JT and his record vs Hail's team up N will not (may be ever) be out done. Not to mention how well he did in Columbus. However...UFM record as well as making where ever he goes shine like no other is good enough for me. I mean he even did it at BG for crying out loud....what more proof does anyone need...really??? If UFM stays for ten years, I think you can almost guarentee he'll have better records than Tressel. If you ask me, I think he stays longer than most think too btw.
I see Hail still has a pipe dream that some how some way tTUN will beat OSU...on their own field. After those stupid eating references Hail, I hope Shoelace can walk off the field when OSU's defense is done with him. This isn't 2011 defense nor offense...Good Luck Hail with you pipe dream.
