While I love the hits like the one that Shazier put on Cal's Zak Maynard as anyone; why can't our guys still hit hard and wrap (on a consistent basis anyway)? I would rather have a national championship highlight reel than a hitting highlight reel (by just the tiniest of margins). Other than the obvious advantage of not letting the guy score, I think you also lose out on the possibility of driving the guy into the ground with your body. In the 02 title game; Dorsey misses that throw to his open tight end in the end zone during the 2nd overtime because a couple of plays earlier, Wilhelm drives him to the ground hard. That's 250 lbs. coming down on him at full tilt. His arm was obviously sore. M. Doss was another guy who hit hard, but would also wrap at the same time. I am not advocating injuring a guy, but just a good, hard charging, punishing defense that makes the sure tackle. Thoughts?

Ummm..yeah! Sounds good!
I'm going to keep preaching this, but you have to take a good angle to even have a chance to make a play. Bryant is possibly our best open-field tackler (even if he does fail to wrap sometimes), and he runs himself out of plays frequently where he sprints up to a spot and if the runner goes a different direction he is completely out of the play. He did this last year so I don't think it's a new thing. Shazier has symptoms of the same problem but it is more striking from the safety who is the last line of defense. If I'm Withers (safeties coach) I only want him trying to tackle a guy at the line of scrimmage if it is a play to the flat, and otherwise he needs to remain in the play and keep the runner in front of him. This is how we keep giving up huge runs after the catch or after the running back gets into the second level. Bryant and others basically block themselves by taking bad angles.
doesn't seem like our defenders react quickly enough to the play developing, so they are further away from the ball carrier upon reception than they'd like to be. then, they aren't fast enough laterally to stay with the rb/wr so they miss the tackle.
solutions: react faster so the wide receiver doesn't have time to juke you after the catch, and diagnose the run more quickly so you can hit the hole faster
Players don't seem to understand their assignments, or they are not recognizing what the offense is doing, or both. In either case, the physical problem of tackling starts with the intellectual challenge of knowing what you are supposed to do. The longer it takes for a defender to figure out the play, the worse the angles get, the more arm tackles you see.
Yeah, these guys aren't in good positions to make tackles, so they have to kind of lunge at guys in what turn out to be poor attempts at tackling. It's all about being in position. Those two TD runs by that Houston kid - both times, when he hit the hole and got past the first level, nobody was even close to being there to stop him. No LBs, no DBs.

Coaching....period. You play like you practice...it really is that simple folks.

It's weird but as many of you have pointed out, these guys are really bad at tackling in space. Example - IU's running back Stephen Houston had a 59 yard TD run in the 1st quarter, he didn't break any tackles, 4 different guys looked at him and not even one person put a glove on him.
Houston wasn't spinning and changing direction like Braxton does - so at least one of those guys should have made a legitimate attempt to tackle him.
If our guys would just try and wrap the runners up, they wouldn't be giving up so many huge plays. I know we're young, injured, etc. But tackling is coachable, you can practice that and get better.
I'll take 7-0 anyway we can get it - I still think our defense can play better than they are, if they want to. Glad to see Urban saying he's going to get personally involved today, I wish he hadn't waited.

The problem lies with Will, Mike, and Sam. Our linebackers are missing reads and assignments. They are either too slow to the play or they overshoot it. They don't wrap up. It's just sad to watch. I'm not sure if the problem is mostly in Fickell or Vrabel's coaching, or a lack of talent, or injuries. It's probably all three.
As for the rest of the defense, I think they're doing their jobs pretty well. It's pretty hard to get the corner on them, it's pretty hard to run up he middle on them (can be done, but they hold their own), and the CBs do a decent job.
The problem with all the talent in we have on the outside, deep, and up front is that we have a gaping hole right in the middle of the feild every play. They bite on every screen tossed and can't wrap up any runner headed their way.
This year will be known for two things to me; Meyer's first year and "The Year Without A Linebacker."
^^^ Worst Christmas special ever.
I'm hoping it's a really bad Halloween specail, and that by the time November rolls around we'll be all better. Sadly, I'm afraid that's too much to ask from these linebackers...
I'm just hoping Soft Cover 4 Studios doesn't release "Purdue Harbor 2".
