Yesterday's game is why I don't like the concept of style points (and computer rankings for that matter). Style points can't measure heart, which this team clearly has. Style points couldn't measure the determination of the 2002 Buckeyes. We (Buckeye Nation) need to start talking about Heart Points. Just like Aaron Craft's Hustle Points don't always show up in the state line, we know that what he does and what our football team is doing (Zach Boren for goodness sake) is far more impactful than beating a FCS school by 50.

I'll tell you one thing...these types of games are only going to help this team and their late game confidence going forward. They've been punched directly in the nose and gotten right back up and kept going for the win. You reference the '02 team, which endured many of the same types of experiences while Miami didn't. Miami may have (or better yet would have) been one of the better teams/dynasties in football history but they didn't know how to react to being punched in the nose. It really took a lot for them to recover and gather themselves while that kind of tough, rigorous battle really played right into our hands. These guys will know how to handle themselves and pull it out in pressure when the game's on the line this year and for the numerous players coming back next season.
If only it were true, Musketeer. But, from an objective standpoint, barely beating Purde (no matter how improbable) is not nearly as impressive as Florida destroying South Carolina or LSU beating A&M. Plus, schools like Purdue and IU measure wins and losses on things like "heart points".
This is Ohio State. What the hell is a Heart Point? Also, let's hold off on the comparisons to 2002. That team beat 5 ranked opponents including three in the top 15. This team has yet to beat a ranked opponent.
Buckeye in AA: MSU and Nebraska were ranked.
Sorry, I meant to say currently ranked.
I never directly compared this team to the '02 team. I simply said gutting out tough wins like this can pay dividends for the resolve of a team. I then used the '02 team as an exmple of when I thought that was the case.
I'd much rather see us stomp all over opponents...but there's certainly a silver lining and many learning points from gutting out wins like this one.
I get what you're saying and agree with it. I hate the fact that when I wwas younger I would watch these type of games and just be flat out excited we pulled out a win like this. I felt that yesterday. I don't care if it was a shit Purdue team we should have killed, we still won. I was so unbelievably pumped these guys gutted this victory and showed heart as you said. I'm tired of always looking at the negatives about each Ohio state team each and every week. We can reflect on what they need to improve the upcoming week. But so many fans are do negative and critical right after the victory. It took me all night and until this morning to think about what needed improving. I was too busy thinking, "holy shit. Did w really just pull that victory off? Fuck yeah we did." This was a game I'm gonna love to watch on replays before next season and after. Even if Purdue sucks. Still a great great victory.
If any more people compare the 2002 team having close games against very GOOD teams to this team having close games against very BAD teams I'm gonna scream. These teams are not even close to the the same level of play. Had tese two teams played each other, this years team would get killed.
@steensn
I believe people are comparing the two years in the sense that there wasn't as much negativity surrounding the 2002 team. People were happy with the victories we were getting rather than nit picking every little flaw the team seemed to have. There was times that 2002 offense could've been slammed week to week but regardless we were winning which is all that matters. Off the top of my head that 02 team had games they easily could've lost to Illinois and Cincinnati. I mean Illinois and Cincinnati? Really? That year especially. But people were just happy to see wins that year since it was only Tressel's second year and we were coming off of a 7-5 season or something.
They also were beating good teams in between the Illi and Cincy games. This team hasn't and we all KNOW we wouldn't likely win. The comparison isn't the same, and invoking a team that won a NC as reason why we should be less critical of this team is nonsense...
I'm just saying people are comparing the jovial nature in which people were like after the 02 team won games compared to the attitude after this team wins. I see your point and agree to a certain extent. But this team wins and its as if we basically just lost. Even after a comeback against all odds.
I mean somebody put a fire Fickell thread up this week after the defense played pretty solid by only giving up only 13 points.
I just wish people would let themselves enjoy this gutty performance without going to the extremes and saying such things as this team should lose and they aren't good enough.
That 2002 team beat better teams. I agree. But everyone was saying that 2002 yam had no chance against Miami. Well we won. I'm just saying this team people are saying would get destroyed against the other undefeated teams this year. I'd day I'd love to have a shot at those teams to disprove the critics. I just feel this team has something of an it factor.
But we have 4 more games to see if they can even get through unscathed.
My money is on the bucks to do just that though. No perfect season is ever mistake free. All undefeated teams need a little luck to go their way at times
Since you mention the 2002 team it reminds me that they looked like shit in 2001 and lost 5 games. I dont see anyone copairing this team to the 2002 team. Now you can compare them to the 2001 team that became the 02 champs. If someone would have told me that the 2001 team would go on to win a national title in 2002 I would have told them their crazy. Im not going to say this team is going win an NC next year but I do know for a fact that it is possible because the coach the Buckeyes have has done it before.
GO BUCKS
& STAY POSSITIVE MY BUCKEYE FRIENDS
O H I O is the Buckeye State
@Steensn
I'm not comparing the two teams at all. I'm simply using the '02 team as an example of a time when pulling out late dramatic victories proved extremely valuable in the long run when they played against a Miami team that stomped everyone they played and didn't have the same resolve that OSU did and didn't know how to react when OSU actually punched back. They were almost in shock, while OSU knew exactly how to handle the situation. I'm not saying anything about the competition comparisons or personnel comparisons. I'm just saying as I witnessed the dramatic wins pay dividends in the end for the '02 Buckeyes when they were gutting out wins but not destroying people like Miami was...this team gutting out wins may be a silver lining to help them in the long run when they make a title run next year. Never did I say this team reminds me of the '02 team or I think one or the other is having a more impressive season or anything.
