Stoneburner?

I refuse to complain after dropping 63, but there were a few big grabs by Heuerman and Vannett. What's the deal with Stoney??? Is he still secretly in the doghouse? Is he still figuring out his place in the offense? Is the coverage on him that good?

Dropped a catchable ball early in the game, guess Meyer has very little patience with him.

He's getting passed up by better TE's, plain and simple.

He was so athletic and talented and Bollman was striking out on good TEs for a while there. We were so excited to finally have a TE that Pryor would utilize down the middle.

I am starting to think too much hype myself. Although i will say he really isn't a WR and he is playing there. He helps a lot as a blocking WR and I see him getting a look in the NFL as a TE because he does fit the mold. But yeah, he is not cutting it here at OSU.

I don't get it either, the guy is 6'5", 240+lbs, and runs a sub-4.5 40, he should be a mismatch wherever he lines up. Maybe he's just a little rusty playing WR, he hasn't done it since high school.

blazers34's picture

no chance he runs a sub 4.5 anymore

No way he's 6'5 either. 6'4" max. I kinda feel bad for the guy..every year he probably expected to have a big year and it seems to never really happen.

Police that chased Stoney down say he isn't sub 4.5 either.

I hate to say this as I've always been a fan of Stoney but does anyone feel like he's packing it in a bit? Usually adversity brings out the best in guys but he's been an absolute non factor. He's done some decent downfield blocking but has been a ghost in the passing game. I'm glad to see the other guys stepping up but I just disappointed I guess. Wondering if he took all the hype to his head and when UFM held him accountable his world came crashing down. Thoughts?

Stoney isn't getting lined up in mismatches anymore. When he is lined up next to the tackle he  is getting isolated against a LB, but they are lining him out wide. He is a fast dude for his size, but he doesn't have elite athleticism to get away with being lined up against DB's.

I said it earlier in the year he isnt very good. He can grab some TDs vs overmatched MAC schools but once we get into the real schedule he disappears. No surprise at all this has happened before.

Braxton zeros in on one WR, doesn't see the field that well..if Stoney isn't the main guy on that play then he won't see the ball.

I was listening to 97.1 this morning on my way out of Columbus and they seem to think something is going on behind the scenes. I personally expected more from him, but not extremely disappointed since we are winning. I'm more disappointed with the lack of play action. I feel like our WR's are able to create space when we run play action. I think it looks bad for WR recruits when we only throw the ball 14 times.

I think think if you were to combine all the points that have made on here so far - you would have your answer. I think it's a mix of a bunch of factors. Buckeyejason makes a good point above, as do a bunch of the commenters here...Either way, count me as a fan of the guy & hoping he has a chance to make a difference on this team before the year's over.

If they keep spreading the ball like they were able too last night, Stoneburner will eventually have to get his hands on it.

Only threw it 14 times, he had a couple targets.  I just don't think he's as good as he's been hyped to be, although we've seen him down near the goal-line just go up and catch some TD's, so there's that.

I would say WR recruits would like only seeing that many pass attempts. They think they can come in and get early playing time since it looks like there is little depth.

I like Stoney, but honestly I don't care who is getting the ball as long as someone in S&G is making plays. I didn't really have that big of expectations for him, but I was hoping as a senior he would be stepping up. I don't know if it is Braxton or Stoneburner or what, but like I said, as long someone in S&G is making plays, I'm not gonna dwell on Stoney.

BTW: I really like what I have seen from Vanett and Heuerman from the TE position.

johnblairgobucks's picture
johnblairgobucks on 7 Oct 2012 - 4:43pm #

Throughout his career, Stoney has averaged something like 18 catches for 180yards and 3 tds/year.  Maybe the Law of Averages suggest he is playing his @ss of this year, and we are getting the best he has got.  Maybe the fans who expect better production and bigger numbers, are just be fans with expectations that cannot be reached.

He is still our 3rd leading receiver with 3 TD on 7 receptions. There is a big drop off from our top two receivers to Stoney but I also think Stoney is our best blocker. When we only throw the ball 14 times in a game I definitely think he should be in just because of his blocking skills. Our runners wouldn't be able to break those long runs without the good receiver blocking we have been getting.

rdubs's picture

So he clearly hasn't been passed up by other TEs because he is out there all of the time but usually in the slot.  The one huge thing he has been helpful with is yards after catch (or yards rushing in the second level).  He is essentially a more athletic Olineman blocking down the field.  If you go back and look at some of Braxton's longest runs, Stoney is blasting a safety or lb 20+ yards down the field.

I just don't think he is much of a slot reciever, they need to get him over the seam more or in crossing routes into the flat.  Honestly I think if he moved back to TE he would be leading the team in receiving yards.  Urban also said he doesn't run some of the routes with enough speed.

I feel bad for Stoney.  He's a senior this year (right?).  He got moved from tight end to WR, even though he had been an outstanding TE in the past.  And now the younger replacement tight ends (Heuerman and Vannett) are getting the receptions and he isn't.  I feel bad for the dude...

We still have half the season left.  I hope he finishes strong.

If he was as good as everyone imagined, he would be getting involved.  I have faith in the coaches in that regard.  He is a starter, not a focal point of our game planning.  And like others have said he is valuable in the run game which is 3/4 of our offense...  We only throw to keep the defense honest, that's what the seam throws on play action to the TE's were, punishing them for the safeties jumping up into the run game.

Heard Urban on 97.1 and he mentioned stoney isn't running routes as well as they want and doesn't have the speed they hoped for.   Sounds reasonable enough.

Just think the move to WR deflated him a bit. Despite his lack of production, still think he would be doing just as well as Heuerman is now, if not better...

I was not in love with this move and took a little heat for being critical of it when it happened. My contention then, as it is now, is that simply putting an athletic player out wide isn't a sure fire recipe for success. It isn't that Stoney doesn't run great routes, but when you play TE, you are generally running those routes against a Safety or linebacker so getting open is a little easier, plus he also has a whole new set of reads he has to learn and make on the fly so he isn't finding himself in great spots.

Everyone loved the idea of a big, fast guy playing wideout-its insulting to the position to simply assume you can plug anyone in it. Wideout is the second hardest position to play in football, period. Stoney isn't built for it.

I think the original move to TE, and the change in body type that necessitated, has hampered the move back.  Stoney is a tweener TE because he isn't a huge guy or big time in-line blocker, but he had the speed and athletic ability at that position to make a difference.  Moving him back to WR, I think it has just probably been tough on his body to try and slim back down/get quicker or more agile to win coverage battles on the outside.

He is a glorified linemen right now, as many have said.  He's not really impacting the game with the ball in his hands, but he's blocking extremely well on the outside for the running game (and quick passing game).  I hope for his sake that he gets at least a few chances to catch the ball the rest of the way.

For all the talk about Stoneburner, one thing is for certain - he's made position moves and done what is best for the team on the field all 5 of his years here at tOSU.  That alone is reason to support and cheer for him to succeed here and possibly at the next level.
