Hello
I'm a freshman here at OSU and all the games this year have been my first OSU games ever; I have two questions about The Shoe
- At the Nebraska game, why is it that we did not turn on those stadium lights that are around the bottom of C-Deck? Do they ever get used?
- What is the particular meaning to the flags of all the teams on the roof of the stadium. Like, a few are of the conference, but then there are some random ones....does anyone know what the meaning is of those flags? Or at least why they are placed where they are?
Thanks!

Can't answer your question about the lights on the bottom of C-deck but the flags are Ohio State's schedule for the year.
@NGBUCK21... not always... like they had a WVU flag on saturday... I never got an answer to the random flags that are not on our schedule nor in our conference... but a team only gets a flag made if they are one of the two... I think they just rotate the other flags onto the poles that aren't being used
Cause I couldn't go for three
Methinks you don't quite know what "logistics" means, but to your first question, I was told that those lights were once needed for night events, but are not any longer. I can't think of a time I've seen them used.
I know in years past the flags seemed to be lined up in order of our schedule. Welcome to OSU!
Yeah there's like the Navy flag and a UC flag....I'm just like wtf lol....

@XFACTOR, thanks, it's pretty freaking legit, but I'm in Honors Engineering, so I'm in like ridiculous classes. I'm just thinking about my future paycheck with an OSU degree!

I have seen the lights on the front of C deck on at times in the offseason. It provides light to see in the stadium but not nearly enough to light the field for a game.

Jurmah - I'm an engineer - you're in the wrong field if you're expecting huge paychecks. As an engineer, you'll never be rich but you'll also never be poor.
There was a Notre Dame flag just southwest of the upper box/media booth. I was surprised because I was also under the impression they were for our schedule/B1G.

@J.Mo
I'm also an engineer. For a 4 year degree, it's tough to have a higher ceiling. I'm not sure what you could do better with besides law, doctor, business (corporate ladder), or celebrity. I guess it all depends on what you consider huge paychecks to be!

Wait, some of you are Engineers/ are studying engineering (I'm looking at you Jurmah!) and none of you pointed out that Ohio Stadium doesn't have a roof?
I'm not trying to be a jerk, just thought it was pretty amazing that this minor detail slipped past you guys. :)

The flags of the Big 10 on the East side of the stadium are in order of the Big 10 schedule that week. i.e. Iowa and Nebraska would be paired if they were playing on that particular Saturday.
This only happens during conference play, before then it is in the order of OSU's schedule(not 100% sure)
The flags in the South end are obvious, OSU and whomever their opponent is.
All other flags are a salute to one of the following: current-season non-conference opponent, recent(+/- 5 years) non-conference opponent, recent bowl opponent.
I was told this by a friend who's roommate helps puts the flags up, but I could very well be wrong about some of the non-B1G flags

OP...
The lights at the bottom of C-Deck are "flood" lights or lower bowl lights. They would use them in the summer evenings or fall evenings when they used to hold practice at the shoe. They are rarely if ever used anymore, unless you attend a night event (non-football game) at the shoe or use the suites at the shoe for an event, you probably won't ever see them on. They won't use them during the game because it affects the view for many in the stadium.
The flags; for the most part are the current schedule for the buckeyes. The opponent for the day will be raised on the opposing south end tower. Usually conference flags go down the east side of the stadium and our non-conference foes will be located on the north end and west end before the press box. However, there are more than 11 flag poles and the remaining flag poles will be filled by previous opponents, previous key opponents, or whatever flag was available. Some of the flags are decades old, and they are be put up by hungover 18 and 19 year olds on saturday morning, so sometimes it rarely makes sense.
I have another light related question. I thought I had heard that permanent lights were going to be installed in the stadium. Is this supposed to still happen and when?

My cousin was one of the people back in the mid 90's that worked the stadium and raised and lowered the flags. I asked him about the random non-conference flags at one point ( keep in mind this was before the renovation with the old press box which at the time meant more flag poles) and was told that after the Big 10 and current non conference opponents it was a random grab out of a big laundry bin, but the random teams were all schools that at one point had played at Ohio Stadium.
@Alhan,
Lights have been discussed at length and the installation of the FieldTurf fueled speculation that permanent lights were coming (because we could increase use on the field and not degrade the surface).
Although the option still exists, there are no plans to install lights at this time. For starters, it goes against the B1G tradition of noon games and would make it easier for BTN/ABC/ESPN to put marque (and even some snoozers) at 3:30 or a night cap. Although administration has been more willing recently, the university and to some extent the athletic department don't want numerous night games because of rioting and such from the last decade.
Secondly, it won't be a cheap rennovation for the shoe. Permanent columns would have to be constructed around the stadium that would eat into space around the exterior and also affect the look of the exterior they worked so hard to preserve during the rennovation. There is no easy way to put lights in permanent anywhere except on top of the press box.
Finally, I believe the initial designs for the new lights would end up reducing seats (not many but some) in the shoe which is almost a sacreligious thought and one the current administration doesn't want to entertain. Remember back when HDTV was getting big, like say the #1 v. #2 match-up. That game was broadcast in standard definition (in 2006) because tOSU refused to allow the over the field camera or additional HDTV camera locations because it would have resulted in a number of lost seats in the shoe. Eventually, they were able to provide the cabling over the field and additional locations to have HDTV broadcasts.
@Osu07
All good reasons. Thanks for the in depth answer. +1 for you sir! (Or madam as the case may be)

I was way to busy watching a game that night to count and admire flags of other teams. I'd imagine that there is no reason to why they are random flags, but I'd imagine that they are teams we have played in the past.
@Alhan,...
Thanks bud, hit you with one yourself. All of this useless knowledge I've demonstrated came from 3+ years as an athletic department employee, specifically event management and facility operations, haha even more specifically for Ohio Stadium.
@Adamant...you're correct; we get a flag for every team we play, and then they are re-used basically in the order that they are pulled from a giant red smelly dufflebag
@ADAMANT73 Well I wasn't looking at them at all during the night game, I was looking at them during the Miami game, much less intense.
@OSU07ASU10 12 o'clock games is a B1G tradition? I hate to say it, but I wish it weren't so. I find that evening games are the best and only way to maximize effect of emotion, both for fans and players. I would love to see OSU innovate with lights on the stadium. I also don't see how adding lights to the east side would take expanding the topographical area of the the Shoe....I think there would be some way to install them in the stadium. I think moving forward, that's an option OSU should look at. The SEC plays night games all the time. Why shouldn't we?
@ONE BAD BUCKEYE
A ROOF!? A roof always takes away from the scene of a football game. Where is the atmosphere in that? No way I would ever want a roof on any stadium I played in for a football or baseball game. It's so, artificial and fake. I need the night sky, the bitter cold, the rushing wind and rain. I would never want to take that away.
What do you mean you're "looking at me, Jurmah12"? Are you talking an internship? If so, hook me up!
@J.MO I've thought about MBA down the road, but I've also had dreams of producing/directing movies, running for political office (under a libertarian rhetoric of course!), and teaching, or possibly public speaking. Right now I just look forward to earning enough money to start investing at age 22.
