SEC or ND?

Talk about a no win situation.  I know it's early and the BCS rankings just came out.  Who knows what it will look like at the end of the season but if you had to choose between the two to win a MNC this year who would it be?

ND led by Brian beetface Kelly?

[throws up in mouth while typing]

or 7 straight for the SEC?

 [barfs all over keyboard]

Yuck. Just the idea of having to choose between those two is like having to choose which foot you get kicked in the nuts by. Does it really matter? You're still getting kicked in the nuts.  But just for fun and the sake of argument I thought I'd see what you guys have to say.  At the very least it might take your mind off the near miss from Saturday nite.

So who would you rather see...ND or the SEC?

Edit.   I'm not saying this is who I think it will come down to.  Just a thought provoking hypothetical scenario.

I would have to say that Notre Dame would be the preferred participant, but that is with a gun pointed at my head. Living in the south, all you hear about is how amazing the SEC is, and I am flat out getting very tired of it.

First comment on this wonderful site, have been reading for a while, and I look forward to some more insight and banter.

No one is stopping the SEC except maybe Oregon. Bama, Florida, S Carolina, LSU, and Georgia are all better than ND. I'm beginning to think there may be another BCS Championship game with 2 SEC teams playing for the title. Doesn't everyone want the SEC reign to continue until the Buckeyes dethrone one of those bastard teams in 2013 or 2014?  To me a Buckeye title is sweet no matter the opponent but would be incredibly sweet to take down someone like Bama or LSU for the crown and end their streak!

I live in SEC country and I want them to lose now. I don't want them to win a title this year or any year. I don't think we will have to worry though, cause it's pretty safe to say that an SEC team (or 2) will be in the mix for the title next year and in 2014, when we hope to see OSU contend.

I would have to go with Alabama. The sole reasoning is that I could continue to argue that the SEC is overrated and it is just two to four good teams that prop up the rest of the league. If Florida or some one loss team beat Bama in the SEC CG, I may have to go 51-50 towards Notre Dame.

What happens if we have a scenario with Bama, Oregon, ND, and K-State all undefeated.? That would be some kind of clusterf*** and lots of unhappy people in college football.

JRich, you could also end up with one of the Big East teams and Ohio too.  Neither are likely to be seriously considered but imagine if you had those 2 undefeated and an 12-0 Buckeye team.  That would be pretty unprecedented, and I'm sure they don't all end up undefeated.

I think in your scenario, the BCS formula would happen to "work out" so that the SEC team and ND would get to play for the title. That would be ratings gold and somehow I think the formula would just happen to put them up against eachother.

BT, I agree with you about ND and the SEC team, especially if it's bama. They will not drop as long as they keep winning, and it would be difficult to keep ND out (regardless of how we personally feel about them) due to their schedule. Stanford, USC, Michigan, Oklahoma, and MSU are all either currently ranked or have been ranked at some point.

bhardy22132's picture
bhardy22132 on 15 Oct 2012 - 12:50pm #

JRich I think in the scenario you put out with those teams all being undefeated it would end up being Bama and ND just on a ratings stand point.

As surprised as I wasnt I was still a touch miffed by the fact that when these standings came out that Florida was not #1 and ND #2. Its not what do you think its going to be at the end of the year its what have you done for me through 7 weeks of football. UF and ND have done it while Bama (who in the end will be #1) with the teams they have played so far is not #1 IMO.

The only acceptable answer is to hope for an asteroid to hit Sun Life stadium taking out both ND and whatever SEC team (probably Alabama) are in the MNC game.  It's the only scenario that will make me happy.

If Florida continues to win and beats the likes of South Carolina, Georgia, and FSU with already getting a win against LSU, they will absolutely end up number 1 going into the SEC title game.  Even if Bama continues to win before then too.  That is, of course, if South Carolina, LSU, Georgia, and FSU don't keep losing. Bama's win over Michigan could end up being VERY Good for them too if Michigan doesn't lose again or loses only 1 more time(last game????) this year.

If Oregon wins out, and winds up handing Oregon State their only loss, beating USC twice, and defeating Stanford, they will play 'Bama in the title.  Even ND can't compete with that kind of slate.  They're still the second-best looking team in the country, and I'm rooting for them to tackle 'Bama, because they're about the only team out there with a legit chance to do so.

Also: I'd root for anyone over the SEC.  Including Ghengis Kahn.

bhardy22132's picture
bhardy22132 on 15 Oct 2012 - 1:07pm #

I get what your saying BT my only thing is as much as it pains me to say it, right now with who ND and UF have played they warrant the top 2 spots in the BCS standings I think. So far the only game Bama can hang their hat on for the first 7 weeks is scUM. while UF has had a trip to A&M, a trip to Tenn and LSU. ND has taken down the 3 Big Ten teams they have played (scUM being one of them) and Stanford. The toughest SEC game Bama has played is home against Ole Miss. And their win over Arkansas doesnt mean anything being that UL Monroe beat them.

Maybe im wrong but right now like I said with what im looking at from a schedule stand point UF and ND= #1 and #2 even though Bama is playing like the best damn team in CFB right now.

bhardy22132's picture
bhardy22132 on 15 Oct 2012 - 1:10pm #

You very well could be right Hodge but I could see voters making a case for ND if they beat an OK team and a USC squad as well. I mean they have to travel to their backyards in both games. That could really impact the voters if ND can get it done while traveling.

I'd rather the SEC win. ND winning would be downright dreadful. Can you imagine the media blitz about ND being back, Brian Kelly being a football god, etc.? At this point we're already used to hearing about the SEC. I'd much rather Alabama win out again, and let OSU be the team to end the reign of the SEC.

However, I'd also take Oregon making it through the remainder of their gauntlet and playing Alabama in the MNC. This is the first time I've truly believed Oregon could beat an SEC team. Oregon's defense is somewhat legitimate, with speed and physicality, and their offense is humming with Mariotta. I'm not sure that Alabama will have faced anything like Oregon's offense to this point. The closest thing was Auburn's offense under Malzahn/Newton, and we saw how that turned out.

I realize that we are not a favored measuring stick in Columbus.  And I'd further confess my own hatred for Notre Dame.  I'm not exactly a neutral observer.

But I honestly think Michigan could play Notre Dame ten times in 2012, and win most of them.

And we could play Alabama ten times and not win once.

Purely as an aside, are you guys aware of this developing story about the ND home-game fans and their referee whistles? It cost us a play in our game there this year, and it may have cost Stanford a score.

lljjgg's picture
lljjgg on 15 Oct 2012 - 1:57pm #

@M Man: I think the ND/Michigan would have been a 3 point game (maybe even swinging Michigan's way) had DRob not thrown all those interceptions. There was also the HB (or WR, can't remember which) pass for an INT that cost them another sure 3 points. ND could do absolutely nothing on OFF, so it seemed odd to me at the time that DRob was taking so many unnecessary chances. It seemed like they got scared off the option game against Alabama, and heard so many things about ND's front 7 that they felt they HAD to pass to win the game, which pushed them into throwing INTs they didn't need to throw. ND's defense is tough, but the run game IS still there, just not the big-play run game. ND seems to thrive off of ill-timed INTs (got a couple versus Stanford as well).

IRT the Question: I would rather see the SEC win. I have this fantasy that OSU started the SEC championship run, and OSU will be the team to end it haha. That would be sweet!

I didn't realize this whistle business also occurred in the UM game @ South Bend. I know Stanford's coach complained about it.

M Man - hadn't heard about the whistle in your game. I would bring another point to the discussion - if ND wins the MNC (good luck beating 'Bama), it would make ND's recruiting stock go up in our area of the country. But could I pull for an SEC team? Doubtful.

Hodge and M Man: if we compare Bama to any other team - including FLA, South Carolina, LSU, or UGA - there might be no comparison.

So, maybe Michigan could win 4 of 10 against ND, but 0 of 10 against Bama. It does not follow that ND will necessarily be outclassed by Oklahoma. If we're talking about the non-Bamas, ND seems about as solid as any other.

hodge's picture
hodge on 15 Oct 2012 - 2:36pm #

@FIDO - ND hasn't impressed me all that much this year.  Michigan had to literally give them the game, they struggled against Purdue, and barely beat Stanford.  Oklahoma has choked in their requisite big game, and have been eliminated from title contention, they're getting the domers at home and are going to be pissed.  Just my opinion, but I think Vegas will echo my sentiment, as well.

I still think that Oregon is the only other team I've seen this season that has shown themselves to be a complete enough team to face 'Bama.  Their offense is fast enough and complete enough to compete against the Tide's vaunted unit, and their defense is no slouch, either.

Bucksfan's picture

I don't know who I'd root for to win, but I could definitely root for that game to occur.  The Big Twelve, Big Ten, and Pac-12 champs have all gotten their chance to dethrone the SEC champ, some of them twice.  The Big Twelve should have gotten a 3rd opportunity last year and were ostensibly robbed by the August polls.

I'll split the difference.  I vote for a ND vs. SEC champ national title game.  ND might be the last dog the non-SEC nation has left in the fight.  They have the defense to do it.

Hodge: I agree about ND. I guess I'm just not as high on Oklahoma as you are.

ND is better in the trenches; Oklahoma has better skill position guys. ND is tougher; Oklahoma more dynamic. Oklahoma will probably be 9-pt favorites against ND, but they will get all they can handle.

Honestly, I'm having a hard time figuring out which is the best non-bama. Like you, I'm leaning Oregon, but even if they are second best, they play at Ariz State, at USC, at Cal, Stanford, at Oregon State, and then P12 CG. The odds of them going undefeated aren't very good, IMO.

ND will probably lose, too.

If I were in Vegas, I might take a $50 flyer on Florida State still winning the NC over Bama. I can see them winning their next five games by huge margins. Then, if they beat Florida in convincing fashion, some writers would run with the narrative that FSU was always the second best team, they just had a weird hiccup in the 4Q against NC State.

Hodge and M Man: if we compare Bama to any other team - including FLA, South Carolina, LSU, or UGA - there might be no comparison.

Maybe we could be clearer, by comparing Alabama to the rest of the NFC South:

  • Alabama Crimson Tide  6-0, (0-0 conf.)
  • Atlanta Falcons  5-0, (2-0 conf.)
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers  2-3 (1-3 conf.)
  • Carolina Panthers  1-4 (1-4 conf.)
  • New Orleans Saints  1-4 (0-3 conf.)

I think ND loses to Oklahoma on 27 Oct - hopefully that knocks them out of the equation. I think they are way over rated.

I think Oregon wins out, their defense is the best they've had in a few years.  I'm not too fond of PAC 10 teams, however, I think Oregon has the ability and the best chance to beat whoever comes out of the SEC.

The SEC is tough but I'm tired of hearing it so I'm rooting against them.

Well Gholston suffered a concussion in the Stanford game and once again Reece came in to save the day in that game. No doubt that Reece is if not now, a hell of alot closer to getting the starting spot back. He could prove problematic for these teams being a little more veteran than the true freshman. If he plays the way he was hyped up to be and how he has played in the crunch time situations he has been thrown into this year, it isnt out of the question for ND to do something this year.

I just want anyone but the SEC to win it, if that means Notre Dame so be it. At least they are reppin the midwest. I'm so sick of the Southern "we invented football" attitude. They had Florida through the 90's, Tennessee in 98, but Alabama has carried that conference for decades, and thats it historically.  We cant win it, so I'm fine with Notre Dame, Kansas Juco, or Oregon winning it.

I'd rather watch a potential hypothetical re-re-re-match of LSU vs Alabama, than watch a ND vs Alabama/SEC NC game.  The Pregame hype would be enough to drive me insane.  Notre Dame's cheap @ssed victory over Stanford (Pass Interference, roughing the passer and pre-determinined final play replay) was just another reminder of why I even root for Michigan, every year, to beat the Irish.

Miami Fla is the only team I like to see fail more than Notre Lame.

Kansas State reminds me alot of the 2002 Buckeyes
