Rooting for Michigan to win out

Who else is rooting for Michigan to win out up until our showdown with them on the 24th? We have no bowl game, Big Ten or national championship to play for this year. Michigan is it for us. I want a 9-2, possibly top ten Wolverine team coming into the Horseshoe this year. And you have to think, if both we and Michigan win out up until The Game, that might make for one of the best, if not the best crowd we've ever seen at Ohio Stadium. Maybe I just want The Game to be back in its glory days, with two top ten teams going at it in the greatest rivalry in sports.

What do you guys think?

scUM winning out probably means they go to Indy and play for the B1G championship, even if they lose to us. Not a good scenario for us in terms of recruiting and exposure benefits they'd receive. Besides, how can you ever root for those bastards?

I don't know if I can say I'd root for them to win the rest of the year, but the thought of knocking off a top 10 michigan team just makes me feel all good inside.

On paper, I don't see anyone beating michigan until The Game this year.  Possibly Sparty with their D (but winning would require them to have somthing that resembles an offense), but I don't see any other B1G team stopping Denard.  But as we know, the game's not played on paper so who knows what will happen.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I can't help but feel so confident about The Game this year.  With wanting revenge from last year, and our explosive offense, I just don't see ttun touching us this year.  The D needs work, but as Roby said in his tweets last night, he's not losing to them again.

Can't wait - just thinking about the game gets me pumped.

I want them to win every game, to me it is better for the overall BIG, I hate them just as much as anyone else, but them losing all their games doesn't help us at all. I want the BIG to be dominant, so when we dominate it, we will look that much better.

Yeah, I know the words "root for" and "Michigan" just don't go well together. I should've worded it differently, since I certainly won't be all "rah, rah" for Michigan, nor will I cry if they lose a game. More just hoping that sports' greatest rivalry finally gets that top 10 matchup it deserves once more.

Another myth among Buckeye fans is that we need a strong UM, that somehow a better and improved Michigan team is beneficial to us.

Wrong.

When UM was getting bitch slapped to the curb by Appy State, losing to Toledo, and basically sucking most of the time under the Tressel regime, Ohio State enjoyed arguably the most success in the modern era of college football.

Three title games, one BCS title, most BCS bowl appearances and winning percentage, not to mention record breaking consecutive conference titles.

A winning and strong UM hurts us in recruiting our home state, and that my friends is really where titles are won and loss.

Thanks for calling me illiterate. Your comment would have been fine by me and I would not have downvoted you had you not done that. But other than that, I never said we needed a strong UM team for us to be good. That's you putting words in my mouth. That would make no sense. I just prefer to have a strong UM team because this rivalry is one of my favorite things about Ohio State, which is so dear to me. I simply prefer a stronger UM team.

I don't care what they do.  One interesting thing about Michigan though is every game they win helps Bama and Notre Dame in the BCS standings.  So in a round about way, wanting Michigan to win out til they get to us, is kind of like cheering for Bama and Notre Dame to make the BCS title game. If they both end up with a slew of teams that have 1 loss, wins for Michigan benefit 2 of my least favorite teams.

Excellent point BUCKEYVSTHEWORLD.  Up vote for you!  I do not want TTUN in Indy, cause they'd prolly win.

I AM worried about this game now - I wasn't before.  This game is going to be a shootout, and our D better show up and shut down Denard.

Regardless, I am the type that wants TTUN to lose...always.  Even if it means making Bama and the SEC look good (OK, REALLY good).  If there truly are implications with our conference looking bad...I am too stubborn to care.  I thought I died and went to heaven when Oregon and Appy State beat TTUN in back-to-back games in '07 (when they were ranked #2 pre-season).

@Jakebuckeye - when I saw the name of the post, I was curious to see the comments. This discussion has happened a bunch on this site with the majority (that I've noticed) being aboard the "F Tsun, I never want them to win" boat. And thats fine but at the risk of getting down voted (which is lame as hell to do just because some people prefer beating a stronger UM) I know where you are coming from. Ohio State is a school with a lot of traditions. One of them is The Game....People capitalize the T&G in The Game for a reason. It is historically the greatest rivalry in sports. It got to be that because both schools are powerhouses who seemed to always be fighting it out for the B1G title & sometimes, the chance to be National Champs...I was raised in Columbus by people who were very, very religious about OSU football & it's traditions, so you can count me as a person who would rather beat a strong UM team so as to crush their dreams & spirits & make a win against them make OSU look all the better/stronger.

Do I root for them? - no. Was the Appy State win wonderful? - yes it was. It really was. But the most satifying OSU victory in recent history (IMO) against that team was 2006 when it was # 1 vs #2. Indiana & Purdue are rivals too...but nobody give a flying fart because one or both are usually not so good. If people got their wish & UM never won another game, the rivalry is over as we know it because there would no longer be anything at stake & I hope that the tradition of The Game is around for a long time, so I would prefer OSU beat them at their best. But don't get me wrong - I've yet to root for them...I never will.

Not to be a smartass but those that are rooting for tsun to win out, do you guys get depressed or upset if tsun doesn't win a game?  I guess I just dont see the rivalry changing because I root for whoever plays tsun.. I know when Cooper only won 2 times in 13 yrs It didnt change how me and my Buckeye friends felt about the rivalry. We still had that hate for tsun and we still watch "The Game" every year.

This rivalry is different than all the other rivalries because of the hate and it will take more than 20 or 30 consecutive wins or loss's to damage it IMHO. (I think moving the game to earlier in the season would be more of a negative impact)

Get a hold of yourselves!  The only time any of you should ever [attempt] to root for Michigan is when there winning will aid you in winning a championship (ala me jumping off the couch when Buford hit the 3 to bury Sparty to clinch a share of the B1G for us - then taking 3 consecutive showers to get the filth off).

Some food for thought for this year:
A) The possibility of OSU winning an AP title are all but gone
B) The chance of spoiling a trip to Indy for Michigan will likely have gone by the wayside
C) If Michigan wins out, they'll be carrying a lot of momentum and confidence going into Columbus
D) There are no scenarios that Michigan winning [this year] can help OSU in anyway

So Buckeye fans, please continue to root for your two favorite teams.  OSU and whoever is playing Michigan.  We all know that I'll be doing just the opposite.

A moment of honesty here. Am I rooting for Michigan to win all their games previous to ours, No. Will it happen, No. Michigan will probably lose to Nebraska due to the magic of the cornfields but that's the only lose I see for them.

As for the crowd, best crowd ever was the 2006 Game so I'm not sure it will bring the best crowd ever. What it will bring is more Michigan fans which haven't traveled the greatest to Ohio for the game since 06'. While the fans on both sides haven't let the rivalry die down I think the media may not give it its due respect and hype. This may be due to both teams struggles this year or nothing on the line. However, if OSU is 11-0 and/or this determine wither UM goes to Indy; it should get plenty of hype. I can understand why you would want to cheer for Michigan but I resonate with the other post on here. I can't root for Michigan.

@Oyster

I feel good about Saturday.  I like Michigan at home.  I don't know if I'd say Dantonio has Michigan's number, though.  He beat us the 3 games when RichRod was coach and last year.  Not to mention, the biggest reason why Sparty is relevant right now is because RichRod forgot to recruit Michigan and Ohio.

But, anyway, Maxwell isn't a bad QB and his receivers are starting to get it together even though we didn't see it in EL in the rain on Saturday.  Dion Sims isn't listed on the depth chart for the game, so that will be huge.  If Michigan sticks to running the football and throwing short to intermediate routes and letting the receivers make plays, we roll.  If we test Denard as a pocket passer trying to throw 25+ yards every play (Alabama game) we'll be shredded.

I think this game is make or break for Sparty, though.  If they lose Saturday I wouldn't be surprised to see them lose 2 or 3 more this year (Nebraska, Wiscy, NW).

I still dont get the mentality of hoping UM "loses every game". Some ppl still don't understand they ONLY reason they have such hatred towards UM and look forward to The Game so much is because of the success BOTH schools and how each one has taken turns ruining the others "dream season". If UM is constantly below .500 every year, whats the point of even caring about the game or the rivalry anymore? Heck at that point the IU and NW games would probably mean more than the UM game. Do you still think for a second that this would still be looked at as the #1 rivalry in sports if UM was always terrible? For this rivalry to mean anything to our fanbases and from a national perspective, BOTH schools need to have sustained success.

I'm not saying you should go out and buy a UM hoodie, but at the same time it's ok to not be mad when they win.

Just my two cents, now I will step off my horse.

In response to @cincyosu, just because I root for them to lose every week, doesn't mean they actually lose.  They still win their fair share of games (unfortunately), but when they do lose, I love it.  I realize that if they lost every game, there would be no rivalry, so I accept their wins while rooting for losses.

I hate scUM but when both teams clash and are ranked high or have good records it only makes The Game that much better!  I refuse to root for them to win out but deep down inside a 9-2 top 15 scUM team with something to play for would not only make it a more important game on many levels but it could cause them to lose out on a shot at the B1G championship and a BCS bowl game.

How often in History has THE GAME really come down to 2 teams battling it out to go to the Rose Bowl or to win the B1G.  It seems to me there's been more history of the rivalry where one plays spoiler, but there have also been a lot of years where the game really didn't mean jack squat.  There have been stretches where one team isn't good and the game doesn't bring much relevance too.  So, I know in our minds 2006 is what the Rivalry SHOULD be, but the reality is, that situation has only happened 1 time. If one of the schools falls into a long stretch of mediocrity and the game suffers, shame on the fans.  Bama and Auburn is a huge rivalry despite one side being mostly irrelevant most years.  Texas and Oklahoma doesn't always match up two top 5 teams.  Do we really think that if one of the teams was mediocre that this game will fall into the ranks of Iowa or Illinois???? I just don't buy it.

I agree, the rivalry is quite intense when you have two elite teams battling it out, but it's just not reality.  Usually one team is going to be better heading into that game.  It's the years where Michigan upsets undefeated Ohio State or the couple of times JT spoiled a nice season for Michigan that really make the rivalry go.  That's what fuels the hate.

Cognitive Dissonance:

"...the term used in modern psychology to describe the state of holding two or more conflicting cognitions (e.g., ideas, beliefs, values, emotional reactions) simultaneously."

This is how I feel rooting for Michigan to win the rest of their games.  I want to face (and beat) a Michigan squad that's rolling and at the top of their game, it provides an awesome atmosphere and should be one Hell of a game.  Yet, I can't really "root" for them to win all their games, I'm especially hoping that ol' Little Brother uncorks a can of whoop ass on them in Ann Arbor, just for the benefit of my lulz-creation.

Therefore, I will root against Michigan in every game, whilst simultaneously assuaging my dissapointment by telling my self that every victory they achieve will only make The Game even better, and the victory that much greater if we can achieve it.

@bodast67  Speaking of Desmond Howard's Heisman pose...One of these is a cartoonish character of a little girl...in the land-of-make-believe, and the other is Tinkerbelle!

I apologize for the size of the previous images...I apparently don't know anything about pasting pictures!  Gosh, if it doesn't involve a giant jar of white paste and a tongue depresser to spread it, I am lost!

@Doc

The question is, why are other people doing it now?  I'm pretty sure I saw Smith or Brown doing it on Saturday after one of their TDs against IU, and I know for sure that AJ Green did it a couple of weeks ago.  All I can say is I don't condone it, but he only does it after a TD so it's hard to get angry at him (as it occurs).  Now if he would've done it against Alabama when we were down 31, I would've hunted him down (or at least sent him a nasty gram in email).

Seeing a picture of a UM player doing the heisman pose on this site almost made me throw up.  Even if it was comparing him to a cartoon nymph.

Great points people, after all the rich rod years felt as good as those legendary lloyd carr-jim tressel wars right?  As much as you can say it is the same it just isn't.

@Hail

Yeah, the eating motion is showing up more and more and that is a bad thing. I expect it in the NFL where players are more self-focused, but I thought D. Robinson should have packed that one away after the Bama, almost Air Force and Notre Dame debacles.

I know I may be asking for too much humility from a college kid, though.

2006 #1 vs #2. That is what The Game should be like every year. I dont specifically root for michigan and I dont get upset at all when they lose, but I'd take beating an undefeated michigan with national championship hopes over beating 3-9 helpless michigan any day. So it would be great beating michigan after winning out this year but if they lose a game or two it wont bother me at all.

I'm definitely rooting for scUM to win out until they become brax and hyde's road kill.  I have no problem seeing michigan going to the rose bowl this year mostly because I can't stand wisc going for a third time...

@BT - although they only met as 1 vs. 2 once, and although The Game has not been the determining factor in who goes to the Rose Bowl lately, historically UM & OSU have met as undefeated teams many times. There was also a time when almost yearly, the winner did determine who went to the Rose Bowl...particularly the 60s & 70s.

Would the rivalry suffer if one the 2 teams became irrelevent over the long term?? Ask Army/Navy, Harvard/Yale...still serious rivals to be sure...but it never really means anything does it? As for Auburn/Alabama, as recently as 2010 that game had NC implications which keeps it nationally relevant. Either way, I'll say this, I've never rooted for UM to win a single game, I simply like an OSU win against that team more when there's more riding on it...

Its a wierd situation. I guess i would rather play and undefeated Michigan team than a 6-6 one but when i watch their games i cant help rooting for them to lose with every ounce of my being.

I never root for them unless their win somehow benefits OSU (and even then I feel crappy that I stooped that low).  My perfect scenario is that they lose all of their games and then when we play them at the end of the season we “Crush” them!  OSU undefeated and crushing scUM at the end is as good as it could get this year!  Go Bucs!

The only time I root for Michigan is after they have beaten us, and are in their bowl game. Just so that loss makes us look a little better, so all of the 1990's

The only thing I root for in Michigan is the Tigers tonight against the Yankees.
