I know a lot of people are excited about the rushing attack for next year and beyond, as am I. I think we may see Smith emerge as a back getting at least as many carries as Hyde. It will be interesting to see if the rushing dynamic of our offense is tweaked with the Freshmen speedsters and a healthy Hall moving forward. Rod's vision and ability is something to be excited about.

Got a lot of talented backs (especially with Hall's redshirt). That is one area that we have dealt with injuries and will be able to deal with more going forward (one of very few positions).
I'd like to see Smith get some more carries going forward, as well. His fumbling issue is the only thing that could impede him, if he can work that out, in my opinion he's got big time talent. He just LOOKS like a great running back! Breaks tackles, great vision, surprising speed.
I love it when he gets into open space. He took care of the ball today, which was great. But the biggest thing I absolutely cannot stand about Rod Smith is that he gets up after every tackle and talks shit to an opposing player. One of these days he's going to get flagged for taunting.
I know that Hall has been injured all year but his speed has never impressed me much. He is definitely shifty, much less this year than years prior. I know I will likely get down voted a lot for simply stating my opinion here but him red shirting ties up a scholarship spot if I am not mistaken. I am more excited about Hyde and Smith and the incoming Freshmen. I am very thankful for Halls commitment to this team and he has always served as an honorable Buckeye from what I remember but the selfish side of me isn't so excited about his return.
i know hyde is supposedly the 2nd fastest player on the team( and i absolutely love him) but rod seems more explosive for some reason
mark may wins douchebag of the year... again
I'm buying in more every game. He looks to have unlimited talent. If he hangs on to the ball, the sky's the limit.
An angry fan...rooting for an angry team...led by angry coaches
If not for the ball security issues, I think Hyde would be backing up Mr. Smith. He's as big but has more shake and maybe even more bake. I hope he starts seeing the field more.
He clearly had the more efficient running game last night... Carlos had what, 22 rushes for 55 yards and Rod had 4 rushes for 48 yards? I'd like them to split the carries 18-20 for Carlos and 8-10 for Rod...
It would only enhance both their pro prospects by reducing their injuries and wear and tear similar to how Alabama and USC run their RBs.
Rod was a beast last night. I swear he looked as big as Penn State's defensive ends and LBers.
love rod smith.hope he get more carries.if carlos hyde is second fastest on team we are in trouble.he seems slower this year to me.we lack a speedster who can get on the edge hope mr elliott is the answer

I really, really, REALLY, REALLY wish Rod could solve his... "fumbling" issues. The guy is just a physical specimen. You see him out there and he looks like a freaking linebacker toting the rock. Kid has it all, size... speed... strength... tenacity... If he could ever get it together (holding onto the ball, that is), he could be one of the best in the country (I think).
Rod Smith is a downhill runner with that forward lean he has. That momentum keeps him from being knocked backwards and he ultimately delivers a blow when being tackled. Defenses get tired quickly tackling a guy like that. That nice big run he had last night left a Nittney Lion run over like roadkill in his wake. Rod is a big man like Eddie George.
He needs more carries. It will benefit Hyde as well. I just hope for no more injuries, and hopefully healing up in the bye week.
Ya would definitely like to see him get more carries.
I think Smith is a beast running the ball. But, he scares me a little on KO returns. Just don't want to see a TO deep in enemy territory

I am all in on smith right now, the guy wants to prove himself, he wants the ball, and he WANT to score and I believe he can. #GoRodSmith
At what point do we just start giving him the rock because of sheer talent? I know he has had fumble-itis, but I don't recall any in the past couple games. I will be disappointed if he doesn't get a few more than usual against Illinois.

reminds me of a slightly slimmer Brandon Jacobs
Not to mention his blocking on Braxton's big run. The kid is playing well, and I am happy for him and hope that he gets a chance for about half as many carries as Hyde going forward.
@USMC11917
Couldn't agree with you more! Like you said, very grateful for Hall's commitment to the team but I also have just never been that impressed with him. Seems like a small back without dynamic speed which is not a good combo . . . I feel that Hyde and Smith and Elliot all have a much bigger upside than Hall.
@Yankeescum, if we're thinking of the same big run, Smith threw himself at the defender, making zero contact, and at best making it difficult to take a good pursuit angle. So I wouldn't cite that as an archetype of Rod's blocking ability.
Is this the 5th Rod Smith thread or tenth? Do we really need one after every game people?
Run_Fido's favorite word is strawman.
I really think that Rod Smith is the most talented back on the roster, he just isn't 100% there mentally yet. He went through a lot of doubt and stuff in the last year and so he's probably slightly behind the rest of the backs.
let's just hope that Rod Smith has all of his issues (... I guess mostly just fumbling) cleared up by the time we go on our NC run next year!
Beast comin' unleashed!
Rod has that smooth Beanie Wells style of big man running. I love when he gets in the game, and I think he is starting to understand ball security. That first run when the PSU defender ripped the ball while he was on his back... I was glad they showed that in slow mo, because he had the ball wrapped tight until his backside hit the deck. Next year will be terrifying...

Keep the Rod Smith threads coming....I love em (as long as he doesn't fumble). I only down vote ignorant comments as well as TTUN fans that come here for some strange reason. I still say they're closet OSU fans...and I always will.
