First off I wanna say I normally don't complain about the officiating because its a very subjective job and I've been an official before and its not easy. Today however I thought there were way too many questionable calls for a big time college game and it didn't look like this officiating crew knew what they were doing. The ones off the top of my head I can remember was Braxtons fumble that wasn't reviewed in the booth, the "block in the back" in the end zone when the LB fell over and Heuerman landed on top of him which lead to a safety, Robys pass interference call, the no call holding penelty where a Purdue blocker literally tackled one of our guys by his jersey on the kickoff team that could have made a play which instead lead to a Purdue TD, and the tackle on Braxton that appeared to be a horse collar tackle. There were a few more I can't recall now but I can't remember getting homered this bad in our own stadium before. Am I a biased fan or did anyone else think the same thing throughout the game?

there were no homers on the crew today
I lost track, have we had a replay go our way the last two games. Maybe 1 out of about 8?
Miller wasn't horse-collared. However, you're right about the rest (though I didn't see the holding on the kickoff you're talking about).
The two I thought were really bad were Miller's fumble they didn't review and that shocked me and then Roby's PI which I thought was a crap call
The "block in the back" if you watched the replay the TE (cant remember who) had his arms out and they reacted to that but he actually didnt even touch him. I hate when refs make calls based on reactions and not on actually seeing the play.
Also did you guys see the picture of Bryant's INT vs Indiana was infact an INT
Nick - Do you have a link to that picture?
Apparently Mark May and Hope have complained saying the officiating went against Purdue LOL. Apparently they didn't watch the same game I did. I thought this was one of the most one-sided AGAINST OSU officiating days I've seen in awhile.

Also the offensive pass int call against us did anyone see that one to confirm it? I couldn't see it and most the time when thats called its a pick by one of the WR on a DB or pretty blatant
The offensive interference was called against a guy that wasn't anywhere near the play. Pointless. Not like it mattered since they declined it for 4th down.
Braxton was horse collared. He may have grabbed jersey and not shoulder pads, but why have the rule that you can't get horse collared if it only gets called if you grab the pads? That's stupid. There's a reason they don't want people tackled like that.
The block in the back was BS. I was sitting in 29A, so it was right in front of me. Nowhere was there a block in the back.
I thought I saw a hold on the kickoff return TD.
Roby's pass interference call was legit.
The fumble I think you're referring to from Braxton was reviewed and quickly confirmed.

@LLJIGG Mark May is the 12-year old on XBOX Live that is hated by everyone and doesn't know when to shut up.

I think they are talking about earlier in the game and Braxton dove on ball, clearly had possession then a Purdue player jumped on him while he was down and popped the ball out. I don't believe they meant whether it was fumble but that he actually recovered his fumble.
Purple Raider
Braxton definitely recovered the ball cleanly and he was completely down just a bad call and bad review as well. Probably the same bad review official from the Indiana game.
I agree-- The tackle on Brax was not a horse collar. My dad and I couldn't for the life of us figure out why we weren't getting any calls... blatant holds, nothin.. To all of you who left early tho.. ha-ha!! Ain't gonna lie, I considered it on the interception.. but I had this hunch.. a sloppy win is a great win; because it IS A WIN! Yesssssssssssssssssssss!! #8-0
Remember that in the end you will be judged not by what you believed, planned or dreamed; but, by what you did.
I looked at that fumble recovery by Braxton several times and that was as clear as possible. He fumbles, recovered it himself (pulled it into his chin/chest) while laying out on his belly (so he was down) and THEN the Purdue player dives in, hits him, and takes the ball away. The fact that is wasn't even reviewed was disturbing! I also looked at the "block in the back" that resulted in the safety call. That was a really bad call and I thought that one sealed it for us, but luckily I was way wrong!!!!!
Can you illegally block in the back in the backfield? I kept thinking to myself I've never heard that call before happen in the tackle box so I did some research. What do you guys think?
Section 3 Article 3(c)(1) of the official NCAA rules
Offensive players who are on the line of scrimmage at the snap within
the blocking zone (Rule 2-3-6) may legally block in the back in the
blocking zone
The blocking zone is a rectangle centered on the middle lineman
of the offensive formation and extending five yards laterally and three yards
longitudinally in each direction

I have no problem complaining about the officials. When they look at the replay and still screw up the call, then the objective crap goes out the window.
There may have not been a horse collar on Braxton but those Purdue tackles were very BS! I can remember at least 4-5 times a buckeye was practically suplexed on a tackle. They yanked down on the jersey to tackle almost each time. It may not be illegal but it should be because it is a coward way to tackle.
The worst play was last week on the onside kick. HE WAS OBVIOUSLY OUT OF BOUNDS! I CAN'T FOR THE LIFE OF ME SEE HOW THEY MISSED THE REPLAY OF THAT CALL! WE COULD ALL SEE IT!
Obviously, I'm biased, but I thought the officiating was quite dubious today - for many of the reasons described above. With the exception of the b.s. block in the back on the safety, most of the worst examples were during the first half, when the point spread was still in question. Could have been just a coincidence, though.
Agree with the OP. These refs were clearly Purdue grads or something. It was over-the-top ridiculous in favor of Purdue.
* Free turnover
* Made up block in the back to give them not only 2 points, but a free possession
* Numerous neutral zone infractions either not called, or called AGAINST Ohio State of all things.
* Numerous other questionable calls throughout the game that all went in Purdue's favor
I find it amusing that Hope whined about it.
I remember complaining to my wife about holding on the punt return and the first play purdue ran for the 83 yard td. Two big plays that should have been called back. I had a hard time being able to focus on the game concerning any other blown calls due to my three kids running around and the fact that I don't have dvr, but I'll be a homer and say that we got hosed on those too.
If you guys get a chance, watch the replay of the game. There were quite a few very generous spots. I know I'll get grilled, because ball spotting is hard because the officials are not right on top of the play, but multiple times Purdue was given an extra yard or two after the player was on the ground.
i usually am one to defend the officiating... not today that was very one sided... if a game is officiated poorly thats one thing but call it the same on both sides of the ball
mark may wins douchebag of the year... again
Maybe Emmert is secretly conspiring to get us to lose a game so that his sanctions actually work! Lol. Maybe that even explains our poor defensive play - Emmert is in on it! That's my new theme. Conspiracy Theory II. At least that would explain why the officiiating is and has been so bad this year because you are all right on your points. Several horrible calls and non-calls against Purdue certainly helped them. So Hope can kiss my behind with his crying!
I agree with mostly everything here, but mostly the holding on the KR TD. you can see it clearly in the replay and it is amazing they did not see it!
F--- Michigan!
This has been a consistent theme all season for the Buckeyes at home. I raised this issue after the Nebraska game when the Huskers kept getting call after call in Ohio Stadium.
But a win is considerably sweeter when you know you not only beat the other team, but the refs as well.
Keep Calm and Ignore the Trolls.
The biggest failed call that I saw was the Braxton fumble in the 2nd qtr., I think, when he was laying on top of the ball, and the PU defender ripped it out of BM's clutches, and NO FRIGGIN REVIEW? Are you effing kidding me? I am still flabbergasted(and I don't get flabbergasted very often) about that one.
On the late hit on the last play just before the half, when Short tackled BM: at least a flag was thrown, but it should have been tacked on at the beginning of the second half, or Short should have been ejected from the game, I believe, for trying to injure our QB. That is my opinion, and I'm sticking to it.
And I agree with Andy. I saw some VERY GENEROUS SPOTS by the officials, especially in the first quarter, when Purdue had the ball. There were a couple times when the official actually moved the ball two yards ahead to give PU the first down! I couldn't believe it. Go back and watch it! It's so obvious!
"Here officer, hold my beer while I find my license."
Andy I agree Purdue was getting very generous spots
There's been a lot of questionable roughing the passer calls. If they're going to call close ones against Ohio State, it should work both ways. Guition got rocked after he threw the ball and the defender got to him after he threw the same time OJ got to Terbush. At least be consistent!
A side note... I remember the refs always being bad when Ohio State takes on Purdue. Back when Purdue Harbor happened, Kurt Coleman stripped the ball and recovered the forced fumble by the refs said they blew the play dead and this was one of the biggest and most BS calls I've ever witnessed... Right up there in 2007 with the botched fumble call on Illinois.
As said above, Miller was down before he got hit (in the head with a helmet) and the opposing player stripped the ball. I know it's a quick-hitting play but they need to review that crap. And Spence was held and then tackled on the KO return for TD. He was in position to at least disrupt the play.
Hope was pissed and yelling at the refs about holding on Guiton's interception. It probably was but they did intercept. But watching replays this morning, I didn't see holding on OSUs last drive. I was trying to watch for it. So Hope can shove it.
Spence or Reed?
Hope is quickly climbing the ladder of complete disdain that I have for opposing coaches. He and baby bert are going to be fighting for the same rung space. I can't believe that that jackie actually griped in the presser saying that our guys were holding and that is why they couldn't sack Kenny G.
The fact they only had 2 penaltys on them all game is pretty ridiculous..and not even reviewing braxtons fumble made NO sense.. taking another look and sticking with the call on the field is one thing..but not even looking at a turnover that clearly wasnt?very very strange
Well i like college and i like football...and im gunna keep doin em both cause they make me feel good!!!
That fumble is just crap... didn't happen... total miss by on field officials and replay officials.
Conspiracy theory - they don't want both banned teams to win the divisions and we got the short stick?

After watching football for over 56 years....all I can say is officials have been blowing calls for 56 years. Saturday's game was no different.
It seemed to me that on Braxton's first fumble he was already on the ground with the ball and then the defender hit him to jar the ball loose. My eyesight might be failling me but it sure looked like there was helmet to helmet contact. I thought that was a penalty in the rule books?
I've also seen alot of from behind jersey tackles lately....and if the defenders hand is up around the back of the neck or even on the back of the shoulder pads....it's usually called a horse tackle.
Regardless, I'll take the win and remember it as a rout 10 years from now.

The officiating was turrible. We haven't had a call go our way for weeks now. We need to start blowing teams out again and make the refs irrelevant.
I'm a little late to the party, but most calls were ok besides Bryant's Int, Braxton's fumble while on the ground with maintained control, and the phantom block in the back on Heuerman (which isn't even a penalty bc the linemen have a 5 yard window that apparently goes away in the end zone late in the game...I guess). Besides those...it was great for OSU and horrible for Purdue according to Mark May;-) What a joke he is as well as his pointless opinions as a sports analyst.

My opinion on this subject probably shouldn't count because I ALWAYS feel like the B1G refs have it in for the Buckeyes. I chalk it up to homerism in an effort to keep my blood pressure within acceptable levels on game days.
You can kill a fly with your slipper or a cannon. Either way, the fly dies. -Ramzy
Guys the B1G does not want OSU or Penn ST. to win the leaders Div. so that they do not look bad. If you have yet to notice that for every win we have got the more the flags have come out against OSU. This weekend will not be that bad cause does not matter who wins to the B1G but next week if OSU wins this week will be ugly in the ILL. game.
i didn't see any talk about this two weeks ago, but the Indiana game was the most atrocious use of instant replay i had ever seen. I was inebriated...yes. But that doesn't take away from the fact that those were two of the worst cases of a bad call. the INT and the onside kick calls had me scratching my head LONG after we WON.
