With Ohio States success on the field and a possible undefeated season combined with no bowl game may allow us more time to focus on closing on certain recruits. Such as Mitchell, Bell, Johnson and Quick.... Not a bad thing.

I see your point, however, a big bowl win can go much farther than just a phonecall to some recruits. Like I said before, if we can just get Braxton invited to the Heisman Ceremonies then on national TV they will air highlights of the Buckeyes well after our season ends and closer to bowl season. He doesn't need to win, he just needs to be invited.
Disagree. The national exposure you get from being in a big bowl game, not to mention the additional practices, outweighs any benefits from staying home. The only real positive I see is that if we go undefeated, we get to keep the unblemished record without the possibility of being exposed in a bowl game.
A few weeks around the bowls are deemed a "dead period" in recuiting by the NCAA. No contact with recruits allowed.
"It's just another case of there you are". ~ Doc (1918-2012)
Possible. It's similar to last year - everyone was whining that Urban could start working on recruiting while Fickel and co. prepared for the Gator Bowl. This year he'll be able to work on recruiting solely while everyone else is in bowl preparation. Maybe not a HUGE advantage, but it helps. I'm sure coaching staffs ping their top targets weekly even during bowl season anyway, but Urban and co. will be able to ping more guys more often.
@Rbuck
I'm genuinely asking, not challenging...then what was all the uproar about Urban being able to work on recruiting last year while the rest of the existing staff practiced for the Gator Bowl? The NCAA made an official decision about it.
"Watch out"
Avail - Part of the situation was that OSU essentially had 2 staffs working at the same time, one preparing for the bowl, one preparing for the upcoming season. R-Buck is correct. There is a dead period from mid-December thru the beginning of January. Urban took over after the Michigan game though, so he hit the ground running prior to the dead period.
Tenn:
OK, so Urban and his staff were allowed to discuss and plan for recruiting (among other things), but just not actually RECRUIT?
I think that it can help or hurt. it can help if we go undefeated and don't get put in a bowl game against competition because we are overrated and we get whooped on. That is my concern for this year with teh Big Ten being so soft, we would be overrated. Given that we can play the "we're undefeated card" without actually playing anyone good, I think it is in this case great that we get extra focus on recruiting. National media attention is great, unless that results in a big butt whooping making us look silly. OSU looks a lot better as a 0-1 loss team with nothing to prove otherwise focused on recruiting. I think for this particular year it is great.
Avail - I wasn't disagreeing with you. From my understanding once Urban took the job he took to the recruiting trail, although obviously not during the 2-3 week dead period in December during which most bowl preparation would take place. And that was the issue, that one staff was game-planning for Florida while the other was working on recruiting.
I honestly don't think a bowl game has that much impact on recruiting. Maybe it helps with younger kids who are like in 8th grade to get them that love in Ohio State, so that when they are actual recruits they have interest in the Buckeyes, but it's not like going to a bowl this year would lock up McMillan for the 2014 class.
Most of these kids have been on the campus, have met the staff and players SEVERAL times, and they've watched games at the shoe. They don't need to see Ohio State in a bowl game to know that's where they want to end up.
Tenn: okay, then logically, if Ohio State supposedly had a temporary recruiting advantage in Dec. 2011 by having one staff game-planning for Florida while the other was working on recruiting, the same advantage will apply to 2012. The Buckeyes (one and only) staff will be recruiting between Nov. 25 and mid-December and not having to devote any time to game-planning for a bowl game; whereas, the staffs of other schools will be game-planning for their bowl games.
I'm not sure if this additional time provides an advantage or not. Maybe the whining about it last year was b.s. However, if it provided an edge last year in recruiting, it will again this year.
Fido - Yes. I agree. I do think there was an advantage last year, however slight, and the same goes for this year as well.
Going unbeaten seems like it would give a huge boost in recruiting. With the majoirty of the team returning, one has to imagine we will be a preseason top 3, perhaps even #1. Next seasons schedule looks good on paper. Youve got to think that a recruit would really want to be part of something like a title run and have a darn good shot at winning a title your freshman season...
Undefeated, Coach Urban Meyer, The Ohio State University, Fanatic Fans - This is a formula that would be hard to refuse for any recruit.
Tenn:
I didn't think you disagreed with me. I just wanted clarification, or to make sure I was on the same page with you. Seems like the staff could work on whatever they wanted, except actually contacting recruits during the 3 week period.
'Preciate your help clarifying.
Being an "Advantage" to have the extra recruiting time is certainly countered by the loss of 15 practice opportunities. But what isn't in doubt is that Urban & Staff will take Advantage of the time to recruit.
Igonoring the whole general downer of not being in a bowl, I'd rather have the extra practice time bowl eligibility provides, especially for younger players, than the extra recruiting time that not being in one allows. That, in my mind, is the biggest disadvantage to the bowl ban.
Having the extra month to do nothing but recruit certainly gives you a recruiting advantage (not developmental, the original poster asked about recruiting) over all the teams that have to prepare for another game during that time.
I really don't think not being in a bowl is a detriment at all. If we go undefeated, Coach Meyer says "We took a 6-7 team and achieved perfection in one year. Come chase national titles with us".
They lose 15 practices...... That's kind of a big deal
I'm not saying it isn't haha, it just does not affect recruiting, which is the topic the OP asked about. It should give the staff some opportunites to close on some of the bigger names left on their board.
Did those 15 practices do jack shit for this team last year though? Not really. I get it, having practices is better than not, but it's not like missing those 15 practices means next years team is going to have problems. There is plenty of time in spring and fall to get things down. I know coaches always say those practices are crucial and all that, but a coach is always going to lobby for more time. I can think of just as many seasons where the team looked the same or worse after the bowl practices than they looked better.
They certainly didn't help them beat Florida :)
