Went there in 2003 and 2010. Horrendous parking situation. It's like they've never seen more than 1,000 cars at their stadium before. In 2003, got there about 10:30, stuck in traffic about a mile from the stadium, got to our seats with 2:00 left in first half. In 2010, we got there 4 hours early and it worked out fine.
Your description perfectly describes what my wife and I (an IU alum, who was pretty embarrassed) went through in 2010. I understand that they're not usually swamped for football games, but it's not like we're talking about IUPUI.
I'm coming from Cincy, and that's what time we'll probably get there. The frustrating thing is (at least in my opinion in the one time that I've been there) you can't park at the stadium and then walk to campus. Once you're parked at the stadium, it's an absolute hike to get back to campus and their main drag.
we got to the stadium 3 hrs before kickoff in 2003, and had our pick of parking spots. Smooth sailing from the highway to the university. Only cars/rv's parked and set up for tailgating at the time were fellow Buckeye fans.
JohnBlair: do you know of any good places to eat within walking distance of the stadium? From my recollection, once you're parked at the stadium, you're kind of cut off from everything (i.e. it's not like the Shoe where High St/Lane is very accessible).
^^^^ as far as I know, that is the layout..... kind of cutoff from anything like Lane Ave. would give you. We took a cooler, some chips and sandwiches, a football, and radio, and had fun. More Buckeye fans than Hoosiers around, at least till an hour before kickoff, so there are plenty of friendlies to talk pregame Buckeyes with.
football stadium and Assembly hall are in the top/left of the map, while majority of the campus buildings are towards the bottom. We didn't venture towards campus, but it looks like a good 20 minute walk from stadium parking.
3rd street is at the bottom of the map running right to left, while 17th street runs right to left near the football stadium, so if you look up and pubs or eateries to tailgate at, and know the street number, you may get a round about area you'd find it.

I went to Bloomington back when Katzenmoyer was playing. It took 4ever to get into Bloomington and parking sucked balls. My advice is get there as early possible. The sooner the better. It's a night game so you should be in fine shape arriving by 6:00... A.M. Good luck, and GO BUCKS!

So you're both saying get there 4 hours before kickoff to be safe?
