Overwhelming guilt......time to come clean

I think I know what happened last night. The post "Saturday Rituals" by CCOLLINS0325 last week has me thinking about it. Last night I had to go to a party with my girlfriend and succumbed to her pleas to wear a regular shirt, which is totally against my ritual game habits. In order for the Buckeyes to win I have to 1. Be wearing my red OSU surgical scrub top 2. Be at my favorite watering hole 3. Be drinking Great Lakes Burning River Pale Ale. To my everlasting shame, I have to admit to my brothers & sisters in S & G that 1. I was wearing a red polo shirt (very scarlet, though) 2. At a party (all OSU fans).  3. Drinking Sierra Nevada Pale Ale (at least it was a tolerable ale).  I believe that I may have almost cost us the game. I did, however, in a moment of resolute determination & increasing blood alcohol levels go out to my car & get the OSU scrub shirt at halftime, causing the Bucks to just squeak this one out. Now, considering that Indiana scored 49 points on us, I want to know if any of you ALSO broke your gameday rituals & helped contribute to this debacle. Come on now, come clean.... You forgive me, I forgive you.

I caught a nasty cold on Thursday. Basically broke every game day ritual. I should have grown a pair and owned it yesterday. Instead I wussed out and spent the day on the coach. Sincere apologies Buckeye Nation.

Not really a ritual, but I went home this weekend. Only other conference games that I watched from home since I became a student here are last year's Nebraska game and last year's M*chigan game. So. Bad luck.

I wouldn't cheer for Michigan if they were playing the Taliban.

I put all the blame on me. Though I wore all the usual attire, I wasnt in my chair, as I was stuck in traffic most of the night leaving the ND - Stanford game. A buddy got me a free ticket and I couldnt pass it up. Seriously a great game to be at and ND is an awesome place to watch a game.

Speaking of the ND game. I think Stanford got totally screwed on that goaline call.

In being there, I disagree. I have seen the replays and I see where you can make a point. But the whistle blew and the side judge was halfway to the play marking the line where his progress stopped when he made that second effort. It seemed very much like he was stuffed with my real, non-ND fan eyes.

Codeezy's picture

Actually it looked closer on 3rd down from where we were sitting. ND is a good team in the opposite mold of our buckeyes. We completely rely on our QB while our defense stays interested long enough to hold it down, and they completely rely on thier D as thier QB just kinda hangs out.

What in the hell is wrong with your girlfriend?  Doesn't she know what is at stake?

When I was a child, my mother was on the phone with some relative in Wales, and the Browns were playing in the last week of the regular season, at the end of the game.  They were just lining up for a game winning field goal when my father asked my mother to please lower the volume of her voice a tiny bit.  My mother said to her aunt or whoever "Can you wait just a second?  It's the last play of the season for the Browns."  My father's jaw dropped and after they missed the kick and the postseason, he blamed it on her for the rest of his life.  It was pretty funny, but man those superstitions always seem true.

I've been working 80 hour weeks all month. I spent most of Saturday in Cleveland working and then drove home to Cbus. I got home and had about an hour before the game started. Life caught up with me and I passed out in 4th, drifting off to slumber with the knowledge that we would comfortable win by more than two touchdowns. . . . . pretty sure the 4th quarter collapse was partially on me.

Confession:  i got married Saturday.  I did wear a gray sweater vest and red chucks, though it was clearly not enough.  I planned this specifically for this weekend, thinking, "it's only Indiana, for God's sake!"  Besides, here in the bucolic mountains of North Carolina, the Big Ten Network is just a rumor.  I also thought that, though our linebackers often tackle like cheerleaders, and Christian Bryant plays like the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow, Braxton and the boys could take care of business with little sweat.  Sheesh!  I promise this is the last time I am getting married.  Are you reading this, Marjorie?  Sweetheart?

yea, it was a bad weekend. I missed my rituals.... I was at walmart with plenty of time to get home, and then the guy checking items out took a good twenty minutes to go through 3 people. I was rushing home, and then a bus tried to turn onto a narrow street, and the car in front of me was blocking its path because he stopped after the white strip at the light, so I missed that green light. I hurried into my apartment, threw my groceries on the ground, turned on the TV and come to find out I missed kickoff and the first play.... terrible start to the game. I am not doing anything from now on less than 2 hours before kickoff...

I was in post-wedding mode again, but without my bourbon, beer, and cigar-smoke-infused plaid shirt...even my tie was different.  Really thought about throwing on my Homage OSU shirt, but figured I'd stick with my post-wedding-attire schtick again.

It's worth mentioning that our "rituals" didn't really fail us in the long run, either.  We still won the game, we're still undefeated, and we're still bearing the standard of our conference.

I broke out the cursed jersey, that I had to put up after the 2007 Illinois game due to the bad mojo that it absorbed. I thought that enough time had passed and that I could wear it again. Never again. I was telling my wife the other night that I think I will have to burn it to get rid of the mojo.

We went out to a local bar with a friend and had plans to hit the town afterwards. I live in small town Wisconsin and didn't want to be "that obnoxious OSU fan" so I wore an Homage shirt and a new Buckeye hat instead of my normal gameday pieces - my usual lucky hat is nearly 10 years old and I thought it needed a break.

We still won, but that new hat is on probation. If Purdue is ugly like Indiana, I'll retire it for the season. Promise!

When an Amaerican flag is too worn for service burning it is the proper way of disposal.  I'm sure there is a protocol for said burning.  Just like there would be a protocol for burning a Buckeye jersey.  Like Carmen Ohio playing in the background and your OSU flag at half staff.  Things like that.

I've discovered that doing everything off of a strict senority standard works well. Example: there is a Buckeye game on the same day I'm invited to a wedding. Been going to Buckeye games longer than I've probably known said person, football wins. For an away game replace "going to" with "watching".  I use this senority standard for 99% of the conflicts in my life.  Probably the reason people don't invite me to much.

@ CCOLLINS0325 - Thanks for planting the seed that got this thread started. To everyone - I've had more than a few laughs reading about everyone's equally crazy rituals - thanks for contributing. We may have to do this again after any other near miss that shouldn't be a miss (or God forbid - loss). As far as the rituals go, I like the beer commercial showing everyones' weird "crucial point in a game tics" - with the tag line of "It's only weird when it doesn't work". That's us.   P.S. Maybe at the end of each season we could have a ceremony to (respectfully) burn the OSU gear that has picked up bad mojo. Like DOC said - OSU flag at half mast, Carmen Ohio playing.

I actually had to do the same thing Saturday night (except I did where my buckeye gear but I sure did break tradition by not watching the game from start to finish).  My wife wanted to go to one of those lame a$$ haunted forest things (and yes it was lame).  However, I ended missing the best part of the game and got home with 4 minutes left in the 3rd.  Boy I wish I would have just stayed out with my wife's friends bc then I wouldn't have pulled an old coaching habit and watched game film. However this was the OSU game and I'm not getting paid to do that stuff.  But I did see a lot of what many ppl aren't talking about and it was the defensive scheme that OSU is doing.  Guess what...it sucks.  Very basic and it's not just because Boren being in.  It was easy coverage (Nickel cover 3 or Tampa 2 and only rushing 4 guys).  That's all they did which would be why a freshman QB stepped right in and passed all over OSU just like the starter for IU did.  Personally it was difficult to watch but it gave me a greater respect for Meyer and his patience.  I would have fired Fickel and the entire staff today....but that's just me.

I left my Block O hat out on the back porch overnight Fri.-Sat. & it got rained on (first transgression). I retrieved it first thing Sat. morning and wore it all day Sat. to give it a little extra love to right my wrong. Normaly put on my gameday homage shirt first thing Saturday morning, if not I wear my Block O hat until the shirt is being put on. Like I said I wore the hat all day, I never put on The Shirt (second transgression). And finally i'm married with 3 daughters, ages 5, 8, & 15. Ever since I've had the technology I've DVR'd the games because being the only male in a home with 4 females there is an occasional universe ending crisis that requires my skills to make something, fix something, or kill something (spiders). When setting the DVR Sat. morning I failed to add the 30 min. extention (thinking we'd be in victory formation most of the 4th. qtr.). So right after Devin's last score, while I was fixing something, the DVR stopped (third transgression) and so did our Defense.

Please forgive me...

@ Dayton - I think we need to dispose of cursed OSU articles at the end of every year with a viking funeral either on Buckeye Lake or on the Olentangy. Everyone pile them onto a boat made from the wood of a 10 year old buckeye tree (10 years in honor of our most recent Heisman winner, #10 Troy Smith). Then we set it on fire at dusk. If we did it on Buckeye Lake it could coincide with the lake jump that occurs on the Thursday night before the M*ch*gan game.

Neer, great idea if it is possible to do. Another future ritual that can go along with the jump in mirror lake. Discarding of cursed objects before The Game would be awesome. Not sure about the boat from a 10 year old buckeye tree.

How about a boat making contest using something like paper mache kind of like the parade floats, the winner will hold the cursed objects.

Fire marshall might have issue with this idea though.

Glad to know I'm not the only sicko who thinks my gameday actions & clothing has a direct Butterfly Effect on OSU game outcomes...Saturday, when the score was 52-31, I figured it was in the bag...I took my lucky shirt off (11W Ft. Meyer) & put on a plain white T. Indiana immediately started scoring at will. My apologies, as it would seem that what I did along with all of our combined efforts made our defense check out of the game early (although dudes foot was out of bounds on that onside kick but I won't dwell...) & phone the last 10 minutes in. My sincere & humble apologies.

I have punished myself by repeatedly hitting myself in the testicles with a ball peen hammer...the claw end. I taught myself a valuable lesson, I have been a bad boy, it will not happen again.
