I'd love to see OSU make a statement here. Put out a press release and say the following:
Don't care where we play- home, away or neutral site
want it to be a potential top 25 team in 2013
if an interested team has a prior scheduled cupcake, OSU will pay up to $500,000 to help a school cover the costs of backing out of any contract
the game will be B.Y.O.J. (bring your own juice) OSU will have plenty, but we aren't sharing in 2013
End it by saying- who wants some.

haha i would love for that to happen except we would need coach coombs to do it.
We only have 6 other home games, so it's going to need to be a home game. Since we don't have the year after open to offer a home-and-home, and we can't afford to have only 6 home games (we had 8 this year!), it's going to have to be a home game.
No big time program has an open date with this little notice and is willing to play us at home without us returning the favor. It's not going to be a big time game, unfortunately. Vandy pretty much screwed us here.
Schedules are set for teams by now. Vandy (& the S-E-C) has really put us in a tough spot. Unfortunately, I doubt we get a decent scheduling pick-up for this spot at this point. Our OOC schedule is already dreadful and whatever game we pick up probably won't help that.
Schedule an SEC top ten team...??? That would help...doubt it happens but would like to see it.

Remember it doesn't need to be week 1. We have other open dates or we can shift other games to week 1 to make an open date.
Why does it have to be a home game? OSU'd be alright having only six home games one year. What Program would say no to a chance to bring OSU to their stadium, instead of a cupcake, if they are confident enough.
This doesn't have to be a home-and-home. This is a one year pickle.
It has to be a home game so we get the money from the gate to help the Athletic Department's bottom line. Too much money to pass up even if the competition isn't any good.
I posted about this in another thread best teams with openings right now at that date and need a game are Oklahoma, West Va, Stanford. I'd love to see either one of those 3 but realistically I doubt it will happen
The point about it needing to be a home game is the revenue that is generated in and around the stadium that day. It will be a home game. It will be a cupcake with such notice or someone with a crap schedule that wants to make a statement to start the year and has the confidence.

The Buckeyes are not replacing a home game with a road game. Will. Not. Happen.
There's not much point in overthinking this. We're sort of in a bind and are going to have to take what we can get.
Here's an offbeat suggestion: Texas-San Antonio. It's a brand new program out to make a name for itself, sort of where South Florida was 15 years ago. That's the exact type of team that would take a loss now for exposure that might pay off later. Plus, there's the "Larry Coker faces OSU again" storyline.

Doesn't Savannah State trade cash for spankings? They made FSU and "some other team" look All-Madden this year? What are they up to?
This situation reminds me of those girls that you are sure you can call the week before prom if your top 3 choices don't pan out. Haha. Pick up the phone, Sheila!
with a chance to step up, seperate ourselves from the Big 10 status quo of crappy OOC scheduling, we will take on a crap cake for the sake of money? What a statement.
I'd love to see us schedule any team in the SEC (other than Alabama lol). Not likely, but a man can dream. Extra points for LSU, Florida, South Carolina, Auburn or Georgia. Alabama is the only team in the SEC I don't think we could compete with, everyone else I'd give us at least a 50/50 shot on--but maybe that's just my Buckeye-pride/naivety showing haha.
@JohnB
Yeah, even with Vanderbilt on there, it's like "blah", ya know? I am glad they have started to step it up with Texas and TCU, etc, etc. This playoff is the best thing to happen to CFB since the BCS turned the sport into a beauty pageant.
Ohio State will only take a home game because the revenue from football will fund their Athletic Department.
Like others have said, this will likely be a bad team fill given that it will have to be a home game and good teams won't schedule unless it is a one and one. Vandy sucks...
Vanderbilt is a BCS conference member, that's all it takes to be a respectable opponent. UCF was supposed to be a top 20 team this season, but turned out not so.
OSU/the Big 10 is facing a PR problem and a percieved tough opponent would go a long way in terms of OSU's PR. Also, I think the players would rather face a quality opponent, than Texas San Antonio.
I would love to see OSU vs WV.

I'm with you Buckeyeneer. Great neighboring state game.

Since I get season tickets, I'm a little upset that I'll have to settle for a 'Little Sisters of the Poor' team instead of an SEC (although basement-dwelling) team. Just one more reason to hate the $EC... On this short notice, I'd be thrilled if we could pull in a MAC team, just hope we don't have to resort to a FCS moneyball game or another FAMU (which hopefully w/ the new playoff never happens after 2018...)

SEC didn't want ther first game of the next season having OSU beat down Vandy. I checked out some teams with openings that day and room for one more game. The best ones I could find that were in a BCS conference are Oklahoma, Stanford, BYU, Arizona State, West Virginia, Virginia, NC State, Kansas, Duke. Although I doubt we'd schedule any of these at this point but never know
What about the Chick-fil-a season opener game. Dont they try and buy two big teams out of their contracts with their other opponent and put them up against each other?
@NKOHL13
I would love that because I could finally watch a Buckeye game in person.
F--- Michigan!

If that's correct, why not see if good ol' walrus wants to coach at the shoe one more time?

****** any of these, yes please.
JohnBlair: Unfortunately, I don't think we'll see any big name matchups. If there is one I would like to see out of the ones still left from your list, I would definitely pick West Virginia. Selfishly, I would like to see Ohio State play UTEP. Yes, it would be a blow out but it would be cool for me to see the school I go to now play against the school I grew up rooting for.
It's true... We really are a bunch of nuts!
Go Bucks!
Realistically, the list looks like this:
Washington State
Boston College
Duke
NC State
Virginia
Wake Forest
Kansas
Houston
Gene (and UFM) have been adamant about better OOC scheduling. But it has to realistic if it is going to be a one-off home match. It HAS to be a home match because we HAVE to have 7 home games. Our entire athletic department is dependent on football money and the biggest money makers are gamedays. So, you have to take away a lot of the programs that would not agree with it (Stanford, Auburn, Arizona)/we have future deals with (Oklahoma, Navy)
I personally would like to see Duke. Team on the rise. Would have a preseason ranking. But still a team we should beat.
Cause I couldn't go for three
If Arizona will travel to Toledo they would travel to Columbus
Too bad they don't have an open date because I'd love to see tOSU beat up on Notre Dame
You also have to remember that these schools are budgeting around the # of home games they will have in a certain year more than a few months in advance. OSU has been budgeting for 7 home games next season and it would be a big hit to just remove one of those games with less than 12 months notice. There is a reason why these schedules get done so far in advance.

Stanford would be awesome to play. But I hope it's a good school. West Virginia would be my second choice
Wherever you are, there you be!
Dick Rod should be more than happy to come back and take another beating in the Shoe. It'll wind up being one of Meatchickens many directional schools me thinks.
