Tonight we see two bucks defenders basically dragged down the field by their grills only to be flagged for a 15 yrd facemask penalty as we make the tackle. Does the facemask rule not apply to the offense? Because that was two blatant cases...

Was thinking the same thing when I saw the replay from C deck. Are the offensive players allowed free rein on the D's helmets?
Nothing like dancing on the field in 02...
They are not. Offensive linemen will get hit with hands to the face from time to time. Stiff arms are given some leniency in that if a hand is on the facemask, it might not be called a penalty the way it would for a defender but when there is a grasp and pull from an offensive player, it can get called.
4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off
To be fair, the sideline ref near the second facemask was too busy eating the kicker's practice net to see much of anything.
You can kill a fly with your slipper or a cannon. Either way, the fly dies. -Ramzy
... and we definitely had his too.
What would the call be if there were 2 facemasks? Replay the down? I haven't seen that in college for some time.
it's technically a penalty but you almost never see it called on the ball carrier unless they twist the helmet or drag the defender down.

I was under the impression that the ball carrier IS allowed to stiff arm a facemask. I guess not? I don't know, I always thought it was allowed and was wondering why the other fans were clamoring for a call.
Class of 2010.
Does anyone else remember Beanie taking a Wisky DB for a ride into the end zone via face mask?

The difference (to me) seems to be that offensive players are usually grasping and pushing (not listed as prohibited) the defenders away from them while defensive players are usually trying to pull the runner to the ground. This is why I believe the defense gets called far more often, but clearly an offensive player can get called for the penalty (particularly if they don't have the football).
I always thought facemasking was facemasking. I know that often times during stiff arms, there is contact with the facemasks. But when you see the defender's neck get tilted backwards while he's running down field, shouldnt that be 15? Dunno...
I have noticed that typically an offensive player is only called for a facemask if they grab the facemask while stiffarming. If the hand stays flat it usually isn't called. It appeared as though Kenny Bell (the Neb. player) grabbed both Johnson and Shaziers facemasks while stiffarming them. Shazier got him back pretty damn good though.
Have to twist, not sure I remember the helmet moving.
I always thought there was no offensive facemask, but illegal hands to the face would be called if the ball carrier grasped the facemask instead of simply pushing it away. The Nebraska player was definitely grasping the facemasks, and that should not be allowed either way.
This might have been the rare chance where it could have been called. If our guys hadn't grabbed his facemask we might have lucked out, thankfully we didn't need it!
