More and more hate.

Has anyone else noticed how much more bitter and angry other B1G fan bases are that Urban is having success in his first year? They seem to be creating new and not-so-creative excuses week in and week out in order to tarnish and throw stones at Ohio State fans, Urban and the program?  All I heard during the Summer was how since Ohio State went 6-7 last year and Miller had a 1-4 game Ohio State will be down for a long time, Urban is no savior, Urban is a quitter, etc….  I get fed up with listening to other fan bases and when I chime in to defend Ohio State I instantly get labeled as the typical arrogant delusional rude Ohio State fan.  It seems much worse this year and if I have to listen to another MSU fan cry about a game video I'm going to drink drano!

Not only that, I've noticed in my life and travels around the Big Ten how bitter and angry pretty much every other fan base in the conference is toward us no matter what.

Tennbuckeye summed it up well. As long as we keep winning, the haters will hate and their tears will flow like the Niagara Falls. All we can do is bask in their hate and use it to fuel our passion for our team.

Can you blame them?  Since the late eighties and early nineties, Ohio State has seen no extended rebuilding (I mean even '99-'01 we were still 21-15).  That's twenty years of damn-near-constant success.  Not even Michigan can boast such fortune, they're still crawling out of Rodriguez's hole.  So, naturally, everyone in Big Ten Land was excited to see OSU appearing to be "mortal" once again--having to endure a rare "downturn" that us spoiled Buckeye fans are wholly unaccustomed to.  Except that didn't happen; and we hired arguably the top coach in the sport while salvaging our recruiting class by pillaging our Big Ten rivals'.  Now we're one of two 5-0 teams in a bad Big Ten, with all signs pointing toward a swift recovery in the Capital City.

Yeah, I don't blame them for hating.  Hell, it just makes me happier to be a Buckeye.

I find it comical.  Let them hate on us.  It should make you feel good that they hate us.  Jealousy is an ugly thing and that is what you are seeing.  Every other B1G program would give a testicle or two to have Urban Meyer as their head coach.  We didn't even have to do that.  All we had to do was ask.  Order has been restored in the league.

It is interesting how so many people get mad at OSU fans because we like our team.  What do they expect us to do?

I wear my OSU gear because I am a fan.  The fact that it is sure to illicit some kind of comment in just about any crowd is all the more reason to wear it - just to get people going! Go Bucs!

@ Earle, interesting point. However, as Michael Scott says - I want both. "I want people to be afraid of how much they love me."

I have to say I went to an Iowa game and tailgated for the day and their fans were awesome.  I had a great time in Iowa City and would love to go back.  I haven't been to Wisconsin or PSU though so I certainly have never experienced that kind of animosity in person.  Of course, just BSing at a bar or something like that I've talked to plenty of people who hate Ohio State.

I think most of the B1G haters didn't think his system would work in the B1G, which was I think we will all see that was false.  Then you had those saying he wouldn't be the same coach or have the same intensity he once did.  That has definitely proven to be false.  I think these attitudes are more about wishful thinking than anything else.  Then he started picking off other teams recruits and it fueled the fire a bit.

The most hate I've heard toward Urban comes from folks in the south though.  We've seen it from actual writers as well, and folks like Brando as well.  People down there just hate him for leaving Florida and coming back a year later to Ohio State.

As for opposing teams fans taking it out on Ohio State fans, meh, that's nothing new.  Other fan bases rip people all the time for wearing the gear they do.  I remember being with a friend in Wilmington NC one day.  We went out to eat and he was decked out in UK gear and the locals in Wilmington didn't like it.  No one was overly abusive toward him or anything like that, but man I can't tell you how many people sitting at their table when we walked by would say KENTUCKY???? The waitress even gave him a hard time.

I've had similar experiences here in NKY with Ohio State stuff.  I went to gas station or something one day and a guy said something along the lines of you should burn that hat and shirt.  I just laughed and said you realize I am a paying customer at your business right????? Then he laughed as if he was just kidding with me.  I said that's ok, I find UK gear to make the best toilet paper money can buy, which he didn't find as amusing.

A lot of those people are pretty stupid in their hate if you ask me.  It's pretty funny to see their lame arguments against our program, especially some I've seen from a few TSUN fans.  One of their fans actually said to me that they'll take their schedule against real opponents any day.  I'll take our record of 5-0 with one less tough opponent played.  Wow, 2-2 must be a real bitch.  I suppose 3-2 isn't much better to deal with, right Sparty?

I wear my Buckeye gear around Austin Texas all the time.  Most people down here:

1. Talked about how much they respected Tressel (Pre Scandal)

2. Talk about how crazy it is that we go from Tressel to Meyer

3. Give me the Hook 'em 'Horns hand signal thing.

I get a little grief but on the whole not as much as I expected.  Then again, the north side of Austin is basically a refugee camp for displaced midwesterners and others moving into town for work.  My group of about 25ish people at work contains OSU, Michigan, Illinois, Purdue, and MSU alums.  In fact, the only two schools I dont see represented down here are PSU and Northwestern.

When i moved into my house last summer, I discovered my neighbor was a *ichigan grad. He was very friendly to us until I plugged in my router which displays the name OHIOSTATEBUCKEYES. after that, the guy didnt give me the time of day ! When his family moved out, the new owner insisted that he leave his *ichigan rug at the front door. I soon discovered that he was a MSU grad and wanted to clean off his shoes on the rug.

My brother in law grew up in Erie PA. Met my sister at YSU, tagged along to WVU where she got her masters all the while not finishing up his degree. He is a PSU and a WVU fan. And yet, he finds it pertinent to give his fould mouthed opinion on anything OSU. He has something in common with everyone else- a lifetime of failure.

What it boils down to to me is the fact that everyone else got what they wanted when they ran Tress out of town. I can tell you that fans of other teams when i would go traveling absolutely hated the fact that the 1 in B1G basically stood for tOSU. People and fans alike wanted more parody and wanted a chance to be where we have been for the better part of a decade. There was much rejoicing around the league esp from the whore up north when Tress got the boot bc everyone thought hey now we have a chance. Then when he went from Urban myth to Urban Savior everyone thought theres no way the program stays clean he wont last in this league his health is bad look what happened to DickRod and his offense blah blah blah. Now the reason other fans are pissed is bc they now realize its only going to get so much worse than the Tressel years for them bc unlike Tress (who ill always love and respect) Urban knows tOSU is not a regional brand but a national brand in the elite status category. He recruits nationally we already see that this year with only the elite ohio kids are getting in and then he gets elite kids from out of state to fill the rest of the class. Whereas Tress would go after kids he knew he had a chance with and sprinkle in a few out of staters Urban goes after everyone. Think about this we have the number one prospect from 5 different states (i count Bosa as the #1 from FLA when all said and done) committed to us right now Tressel never achieved anything close to that. Then all the fans predicted that we would at best go 8-4 this year instead we can tie last years win total by week 6! People were afraid to admit it at first or were at least hoping but are now realizing that they are in deep crap as they now realize that if keeping up with us was bad when Tress was here they now have officially no chance and can only hope Urbans health fails. The MSU's and Wiskys of the world now realize they had a 2 year window and now know its gonna be another really longtime before they can have any hope again. Thanks to all of them we traded a volvo in for a lambourgini and all i say to my scUM and other friends is smile and say Good Luck!

I've worn my Buckeye gear on several vacations around the country (not to away football games).  Nobody has ever made a rude comment to me and I have heard countless O-Hs.  People hate us because we are everywhere and we are not timid about being fans.  We are Ohio State fans, we don't cheer for other teams to beat our rivals for us (although I am still a big fan of App State), and we don't call ourselves fans of a freaking conference.

I heard a lot of crap over the tattoo fiasco and the firing of Coach Tressel also, while here in Louisiana. I don't know were the hatred for the Buckeyes stems from, but I've been on the road for almost 30 years and I've seen my fair share. I've proudly worn the scarlet and gray in foreign countries and almost every state in the continental USA. I've had the most trouble in the mid west, which is understandable, and Florida. Apparently, all B1G fans retire in Florida and bitterly hang on to their Buckeye hatred well in to their twilight years. I think that people generally despise the fact that tOSU fans are genuinely proud of their team, their band, and their university.

Define success?  5-0? A 10-win season?  Getting the best from his players until the end?  Winning the Leaders division?  Beating your rivals?  Simply not tanking?  All of the above?

I'm only bitter with the Cal game.  Felt like OSU got away with one between the missed field goals and some questionable personal foul calls.  Still, OSU was supposed to win all of those non conference games, so it's not too shocking.  Plus, it helped Michigan for OSU to win this past Saturday.  I think Urban might have taken it over the top a little, but nothing wrong with getting up for a tough test on the road.

To be honest, I'm a lot more bitter that we couldn't score on a very mediocre Notre Dame team and the fact that the idiot voters think they're a top 10 team.

Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!
