Marcus Lattimores Knee...

Just watching some football & saw the Marcus Lattimore knee injury. It was gruesome to say the least...I don't know that I've ever seen anything quite like that before. Thoughts & prayers going out to that young man today - a reminder that football can be a brutal game & a career can end any moment.

I haven't seen the video, but from the picture I saw it looks like his entire knee twisted about 90 degrees and he probably tore some ligaments as well.

Gruesome injury, potentially career ending plays like that are always really sad

EDIT: And when I say 'probably' tore some ligaments, I mean difinitely tore some ligaments. It looked like the only thing holding his leg together was the skin.

It's a bummer for sure. I've had 2 ACL reconstructs on the same knee & can't image the pain of his injury, as it looked as though not only the ACL, but possibly every ligament was torn on that one. Hoping the best for him.

Horrible. I feel so bad for the kid, especially since he just coming off that ACL injury.

good news? it was the other knee. I have a feeling he is going to be snake bitten his whole care a la Adrian Peterson, they both look for contact.

Never wanna see that happen to anyone.. especially with a kid with so much talent but McGhee was able to come back from his horrific injury so hopefully Lattimore will be able to do the same.

Poison nuts's picture
Poison nuts on 27 Oct 2012 - 2:14pm #

^^^What I worry about is him having the other one reconstructed & now this injury which was at least as bad as McGahee, it would be tough to ever be the same, but I too will be hoping he's able to do it.

These kind of injuries really freak me out.  Do you think this would have happened had he been wearing a knee brace?

Knee brace or not it would have happened because of his cleat planting into the ground when the Tennessee defender hit hit leg.

Yeah I don't think a brace would have done much if anything from preventing this injury

Reminded me A LOT of McGahee's injury.  This is one of the reasons why I stopped playing as a freshman in HS.  I really hope he can come back from this without too much trouble.

On the earlier question of a brace - sometimes they can make things worse & I think this is one of those times. On a hit that brutal, he probably breaks it in a couple places & tears the knee part...I could be wrong there, but there are instances where you're actually better without.

@Lucky I too quit football after my freshman year in high school. However I waited until AFTER the serious injury. Lacerated my liver in the third quarter of the first game of the year. Spent four nights in the hospital and wasn't allowed to run or lift anything heavier than 8 pounds for 12 weeks, and the best part is, I got lucky. The laceration came from my rib being bent back into my liver, had the rib broken it would have gone deeper into my liver and I would have needed some serious surgery to stop the bleeding. After hearing that I decided football probably wasn't in my best interest for the future

@Triv yeah, you are lucky.  I broke my thumb in 8th grade but kept playing.  Freshman year I never played another down after a game where I had three straight tackles as a DT against Middletown (Middleton?).  At that time, both theor RB and QB were at least 6'2" and no one else on my team could take them down.  The freshman coaches at Hilliard Davidson were complete idiots lol.

Florida WR broke his arm in a pretty gross way when running a reverse early in the game against Georgia.  The announcers never mentioned it but I went back and reviewed the play, his left army was completely bent behind his back while laying on his left shoulder.

I upvoted J.MO not because I like anyone getting hurt like that, but because I couldn't agree more. I witnessed a pretty nasty injury on someone personally few years back with an ankle facing 180 degrees the wrong way and the Lattimore hit was awful.  I looked at my roommate and said it was worse than the Willis when I saw it live back in the NCG.

MediBuck's picture

I definitely grimaced when I saw that one go down. His LCL and MCL ligaments are almost certainly destroyed, and he'll be lucky if his menisci aren't floating around that bursa. Poor kid, you never want to see an injury like this on the field :/

I've really never seen anything like it.  I intentionally avoided it and then as my wife and I were sitting here and I was telling her what happened and I saw it.  Pretty much for like 5 minutes all I could say was OHHHHHH, Man.  WOW. Eww etc.  I certainly hope the kid is ok.  He has a bright future and that is pretty horrific.  Another thing that stinks about it is, from all indications the kid is just a really really good kid.

I can't help but watch the trainwreck, I just can't not watch but I yell when I watch it. Super sad for the kid, i agree, by all indications he was a good kid making a career for himself. Let's hope he can recover and get another shot.

I had MCL, patella, and femur as a teen - took 3 months before I could even limp on that leg, and let's not mention the PT time. I can't bring myself to watch the video of his injury. Wishing him lots of luck, because that's just awful.

I feel bad for the guy after coming back from a torn ACL last year and having a successful season so far. That injury almost rivaled Willis McGahee in the Fiesta Bowl. Gotta feel for him, kid was in some serious pain. Hope everything turns out well for him. Hate to see a good talent go down to any injury let alone one that severe.

Oh man - I hadn't heard that he had all those injuries! I did figure every ligament in the knee got torn - but a broken femur, broken patella...man - that is horrible. I would say that that would be about the worst football leg injury I've ever heard of if all that really did happen. Worse than McGahee by a long shot...

At least it wasn't a compound fracture of the femur.

Anyone remember Bengal's DL Tim Krumry's (sp?) Super Bowl leg break?  that was gruesome, as well.

that's a limb-threatening injury. football is the least of his worries. i would assume he took out a generous insurance policy, so he'll be compensated handsomely.

nonetheless, even more painful than the leg injury is a career cut short when you still had the talent to keep playing.

Brian VanOchten of TownSquareMedia.com is reporting that the RB tore all four tendors in his knee (PCL, LCL, MCL, ACL) on top of suffering a broken femur:

This news has not yet been confirmed by anyone with any relation to the South Carolina football program or Lattimore and should not be considered official, but the injury certainly looks that bad.

Yeah ESPN is saying he "dislocated a knee cap". His leg was facing the wrong way. That isn't just a dislocated knee cap. Theres so many tendons and muscles that had to be ripped for his leg to look like that.

I got hit like that as a sophomore in HS. It snapped my tibia and fibula in 6 places with the fibula sticking out of my skin. That being said, I'm glad I had my injury rather than Lattimore's. Hope he can recover!

Just a horrible injury...it's so sad that he made a come back from that ACL injury last year all to have this happen.  Such a shame BC he was key in SC winning this year.  I can see them struggling mightily the rest of the way.
