I will be coming to old Columbus town for the Illinois game and I am bringing my dad. I want to grab lunch at a unique place before the game and want it to be close to the stadium so we can make it to skull session etc. I have heard good things about Thurman cafe. Would traffic be terrible or does anyone have suggestions? Please help!

Thurman's would be tough on gameday just my opinion but you can order to go and eat it outside or on campus...just a trick if you don't want a 3 hour wait
Chefonette is a nice little restuarant not too far away that shouldn't be too busy. Easy Living is a nice deli on Lane. It depends what you are in the mood for, there's anything you could want.
Schmidt's and the Ohio Deli were both on the food channel... Eddie George's Grill was a great environment when I was there for the Nebraska game.
Eddie George's is a typical sports bar, not too unique. It does have the ability to handle a large capacity though, so usually little to no wait.
@Buck-I.8 unless it's Sunday when the Browns aren't on local TV and you want a bar seat...

Unique places...
Buckeye Donut on High Street south of Lane. They have (at least had; its been a few years) good gyros.
Northstar Cafe on High Street in the Short North. Get the Northstar Burger - it's delicious. There's a public pay-to-park parking next to the White Castle that Northstar is next to.
Gooeyz in the South Campus Gateway. Good gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches.
The most unique place I ever ate at in Columbus and was quite possibly the worst food I had in Columbus but it's unique is The Blue Nile.
One hole in the wall place just north of campus is the Blue Danube. I have had most of the menu and everything was really good just the service kinda sucks. But definitely an unique environment on campus.
“There are some people addicted to alcohol, some people are addicted to gambling,” Luginbill said. “Urban Meyer is addicted to football, and he’s addicted to winning.”
There are a few Piada's in the areas surrounding campus. It is literally an Italian version of Chipotle, and it is absolutely fantastic. If I remember correctly, Piada only exists in the Columbus area, and there are a few different locations. Seriously some of the best food I've ever had, and it's VERY fast.
I wouldn't cheer for Michigan if they were playing the Taliban.
Like Golden said, Chefonettes in UA is amazing breakfest/brunch food. Easy Living is great as well but probably will be packed. Dube probably isn't your Dad's scene but you never know. Anything in the Short North won't really be seeing a lot of gameday traffic and it is a quick 10-15 minute walk to the stadium, or a $10 cab ride.
The Dube (The Blue Danube). Cheap food (breakfast, lunch, brunch), cheap booze and is within walking distance to the 'Shoe. It's a bit north but not too far. Thurman Cafe is a good burger joint but it's not that big, it's always packed, and it's in German Village on the other side of downtown from campus. Chef-O-Nette is pretty solid as well...but I'd go with the Dube.
Also, Jack and Benny's is a great place on High and Hudson but specifically for breakfast.
Gallo's Taproom on Olentangy and Bethel next to the now closed K-mart. Great food/ great beer selections and you can take a piss on Michigan logo in the mens bathroom!
Hangover Easy on Neil.
Hangover Easy does breakfast and lunch, it's definitely my kind of "unique, campus-style" place. 0.6 miles from Ohio Stadium.
Blue Danube (aka, "The 'Dube") is an awesome little diner/bar that doesn't feel as "campus" (though it's still a dive) as Hangover Easy, it's still a pretty solid joint. 1 mile from Ohio Stadium.
Commonwealth Sandwich Bar is pretty tasty, as well. Though, it is tiny. 1.2 miles from Ohio Stadium.
You can't walk to it, but Katzinger's Delicatessen in German Villiage is my pick for sandwiches. It's pretty busy, but the ingredients are top notch, and the food filling and delicious. 4.1 miles from Ohio Stadium.
I just found a place on High, across from Arps Parking garage called Pera. It is turkish type food, but it is served up chipotle/piada style. In fact, it's pretty close to Piada's look and feel. I wasn't sure what to think, not having had a lot of turkish food, but I really enjoyed my chicken wrap. Nice flavor and heat.
It's definitely unique to campus, but it's not exactly traditional "pre-game" material. :)
Tommy's!!!
Great pizza and it is really close to the stadium. Tommy's has become a tradition whenever I get to the Shoe for a game. Pizza may not be exactly what you would call unique food but it is a sweet place to eat.
