reporting that JT Barrett has been told he tore his ACL, but is seeking another opinion. Obviously would hurt him being out the rest of his season, plus any long term effects it may have on his mobility. thought i would let you guys know

This can't be good. Makes me wonder if the staff will accelerate their plans to find a 2014 QB.
I read this from another source
"JT Barrett injured his knee on Friday night. Today he was told he has torn ligaments and meniscus, but wants to get a second opinion."
It's behind a paywall here, but basically he will seek that opinion come Wednesday.
@GSW... If he does have an ACL tear does that have any affect on his scholly? Will the staff try to go after another 2013 QB? I know Barrett was open to the idea of redshirting at OSU anyway.
^that could be the right as well. a couple different stories floating around apparently. we'll just have to wait to hear it straight from JT

Well also in that article, it stated he talked to Meyer and Herman tonight. Not too many details regarding the convos. It doesn't seem to hurt his recruitment in any way IMO. Just hope that he heals and can perform at his best when he is 100% (ex. Adrian Peterson). He will most likely redshirt now I would think. I feel the staff may get a head start at a 2014 QB , rather than a 2013 QB.
I highly doubt his scholarship would be pulled for a returnable injury. But I think that Mr. Barker could be getting an offer sooner rather than later.
@GSW beat me to it. out of all the reports, I hope that one is the least accurate. not looking good though

Looks like Michigan and Ohio State's QB's are done for the season
Ugh thats not good at all. Hope he has a speedy recovery. Idk why he'd want a second opinion the test you use to determine if the ACL is torn and the MRI don't lie. I also wonder if this is going to effect whether he still wants to early enroll
^^^^ if he inclined to leave the comfort of family and home, to start his academics at OSU, I'm sure his medical attention and rehab process would be top notch at OSU's facilities. Redshirt is probably the road he'll go.
He most likely wouldn't see many snaps until 2015 pending if Braxton stays all 4 years. Plenty of time to heal.
Assuming cardale jones doesnt emerge..jk
i saw his hs stats, the guy runs more often than braxton. Maybe ufm oughta tell hs coaches to take it easy on his future players.
@ Johnblair- completely agree our staff and facilities are top notch for recovery. I was more on the lines thinking it would be hard walking across campus on crutches in the ice and snow cuz most ACL tears are a 6 month healing process from the date of surgery
Ugh! Too bad for JT man! Necks and knees really freak me out. I hate to see any kind of injury (except for maybe a shot to Bielema's jibs) but I really feel for guys who suffer an injury to their knees/kneck. I don't know much about the healing process. I know willis McGahee and Reggie Bush have recovered pretty well from knee injuries, but can it ever be the same?
"I'm One Bad Buckeye, and I approve this message."
Pryor played half a season with a PCL tear, had surgery and then went out and ran a 4.36 40. This isn't microfracture surgery which is a big ol' crapshoot. A torn ACL/MCL is a whole lot more predictable and easier to recover fully from. Case in point, Willis McGahee did the stanky leg about 7 years before it was popular and he fully recovered.
Didn't RG3 miss up his knee during his 2nd year @Baylor? Its possible he'll come back better than before. Well at least what I'm hoping for.
I'd like two QBs in 2014 now...
I'd definitely like for 2014 offers to start going out now! Take 2 studs, let them battle it out, and the one that doesn't win can transfer if they want.
Honestly, not too worried about him going forward. He'll get surgery if he needs it and then top rehab at OSU as others stated. Looking on the bright side, this will give him more time to study the playbook, concentrate on getting acclimated to college classes, and work on things like reads and progressions.
I had read that he was planning on redshirting anyway. My worry is that not every recovery goes as well as McGhee and Reggie Bush. I hope it goes well, but there are no gaurantees.
Yes, there are no guarantees, but ACL and other ligament tears in the knee are not what they used to be. It is actually highly uncommon now for them to cause much of a dropoff at all in athletic ability or performance after the rehabilitation process.

I feel for the kid! Hopefully he can recover fully and become a star. Sucks not being able to finish your senior year. Only ray of light is that he is probably 2 years away from being a true contributor to this team. Although it would have been nice to see him come in for a play or two and watch him run over people and give Braxton a breather.
J.T. is a great player. He won't lose his scholarship. That's nonsense. He will enroll early and get the treatment and care of OSU personnel which is a good thing.
A redshirt was likely before this and now it makes it imminent.
ACL injuries are serious but recovery has made good strides lately so nothing to worry about just yet.
OSU has been said to only take one QB in 2014. All 3 on current roster are eligible to return next season and with Barrett makes 4. Have to remember after next season Guiton is gone, and Brax could leave early. That is worst case scenario, leaving only Cardale and Barrett.
Braxton is a rare talent, and injury prone, so while an early entry to the draft from him is completely possible, I have been hesitant to see it happening. My reason: Think about the draft history with QB's. What's the history of QB's his height? Not optimistic as far as draft position.
You just never know though, so it could be a wise move to take 2 QB's to be safe.
What's the career history on QB's that run this system in college to the pros? He will have to go as a RB or WR, not QB in my opinion. Look at Vince Young, Tim Tebow, Dennis Dixon, Graham Harrell, Chase Daniel, etc... Alex Smith has been ok since Harbough got there, but other than that there aren't too many spread/read option QB's who have been very successful in the pros. I'd like to see 2 QB's in the 2014 class and I'd like to see the offers go out soon.
Tough luck for JT but the silver lining is he has plenty of time to recover. Enrolling early and utilizing tOSU doctors and medical staff will only help him get back to full strength. A redshirt year was expected so now he can focus on learning the offense mentally before stepping on the field. Hopefully JT can return with no performance issues and be a great QB for the Buckeyes.
We know Urb wants star caliber players at QB so that will be an emphasis to get the best of the best at the position in the 2014 class.
Derek, I think the height thing went out the window last year. RG3 is barely 6'2'' and Braxton is said to be 6'1.75''. With that said, Unless Braxton comes out throwing like RG3, he should be back for his senior year.
Buck in SEC, Braxton won't go to the NFL as a RB or WR. He will go as a QB. Whether or not he starts for the NFL is another story. Denard should go as a RB himself but I bet he tries to be a QB as well. Braxton has a better shot at it though.
This is really bad news for the kid. It should not affect his college career.. He will enroll early and use TOSU's excellent facillities. Sucks not finishing his senior year.. He also will learn the read option from Braxton. Good luck with your rehab, young man.
Man - I've had 2 ACL reconstructs. When I did the first one in 91 it was still an injury that killed careers, in 98 I did the same one, and they had gotten way better at the procedure...Nowadays, they have gotten so good at it that it is basically just as good as the original ligament that you were born with, so he'll be just fine IMO. Just sucks to have that happen to you right before you're headed to college....Best of of luck young man!

Didn't Tajh Boyd tear his ACL his senior year of High School when OSU was recruiting him?
Regarding Braxton to the NFL...I've just never seen him getting drafted as a QB. Love the kid but he is just too valuable as a runner to not be used as a running back in the NFL IMO.
@Hayze
Unfortunately, I agree. Unless Braxton improves his ability to diagnose coverages and general ability of throwing the football, I have a feeling he will become a RB at the next level. He has the perfect body type for it, and if he added just a few more pounds of muscle I think he could take the punishment (or lack thereof based on how well he avoids tackles and big hits).
I would love, though, for Tom Herman to stick around 2 more years and teach Braxton everything he needs to know about becoming a true QB. Imagining a Donovan McNabb type passer with Braxton's running ability would be amazing...
"What we do in life echoes in eternity"
He also said there was no pain or swelling in the knee...going for a second opinion.
IRT losing the scholarship: I'm glad to hear that is doesn't sound like OSU would pull his scholarship offer. Even though it makes business sense, I hate when universities do that to kids. James Hearns (Florida LB recruit) was talking about how every university that offered him pulled their offers when he got injured--and by not doing that kind of thing, OSU can show that they actually care about these guys as PEOPLE, and not just as a piece of meat filling out their roster. To me it's similar to oversigning, or that case at Alabama where Saban told that RB recruit to avoid going to college for a year so that he could fit in to next year's team. Absolutely disgusting to me. People like Saban don't seem to give a **** about these young men as people, they care about whether this piece of meat is going to add to their W's or L's.
If they didn't pull the scholarship offer for Connor Crowell, who wasn't thought of as being as "elite" a prospect and had what sure sounded like an even worse injury, I doubt they would do it for Barrett (I know, different staff now).
As far as Miller's potential to be a NFL quarterback goes, I would have thought it unlikely a season ago, but his passing has made major strides since then. He doesn't have Tebow's size, and that's going to put a limit on how high he could be picked, but he doesn't have to be drafted where Tebow was in order to have a career.
The most "loud mouth, disrespect" poster on 11W.
I disagree with some of you guys. You say Braxton is the perfect size for a RB but he is the exact same size as RG3. If he can cultivate his throwing over the next 2 years like RG3, I think he is definitely a QB. As is today, he is still a QB entering the NFL but not quite a starter level.
Switching a player from QB into the NFL just doesn't work that well. If they come in as a college QB, they are staying at QB or just don't draft them. Didn't work for Eric Crouch and wouldn't work for Pryor going to WR. Either Braxton is good enough at QB or he is not.
Worked ok for Randle-El. Brad Smith was solid as a receiver/return man for NYJ. It all depends on the guy. Crouch just hit his athletic limit at the collegiate level. Don't think that'll be the case with Miller, though I agree it's too early to say he can't be drafted as a QB. Right now? He gets drafted to play WR or RB on 3rd down. 2 years from now? The sky is the ceiling.
When told OSU set school record for 50+ games this year, UFM said "That's good. We're gonna break that next year."
Randle El was barely 5'10'' and had no intention of being an NFL QB. Brad Smith is actually the 3rd string QB for Buffalo and does run the wildcat as a QB. Not to mention Randle-el really did nothing except a couple of passes in a superbowl once Ben rothlisberger came on. He wasn't even that good of a WR! I thought we were talking about successes of players converted from QB to another position. Not guys who never would be an NFL QB and still wasn't really good where they moved too.
Crouch wasn't good enough to be an NFL QB but he didn't even get a chance. They tried to make him a Safety from the get go. He was basically the forefather for Tebow!
and at this point still I say Braxton throws a ball 10X better than Crouch, Randle-el and Brad Smith when they were drafted. After another 2 years, no contest!
If he goes to the NFL as a QB, he will play about as much as Troy Smith did... It's not going to happen. I think Braxton is a great college QB... He might even win a Heisman before he is done, but the NFL takes pocket passers. Vick is a runner and not looking too successful. Cam Newton was tough as a rookie, not good this year. RG3 has started out strong but what will he turn out to be? Let's look at the dominant NFL QB's:
Rodgers
Brady
Manning and Manning
Ryan
Brees
Schaub
Luck
How many of them come from true spread offenses like what Urban runs? None... Braxton will be more successful if he goes to the NFL as a WR or RB.
(:ey do use 3 and 4 wr and a couple TE. OF the qb you list how many of teams actally have a geat rb. Maybe 2 or 3.
I doubt Braxton would leave early. He is still so raw still and his decision making along with his accuracy aren't anywhere near where they need to be for the NFL. I could however see him being a good wild cat QB or 3rd down back in the league.
I see Braxton staying all 4 years. He is smart enough to know he shouldn't rush into the NFL as raw as he is.
I'm on the side that says Braxton could be a QB at the next level. He's athletically gifted in a way that's very rare & I agree that if he starts throwing better (& he's made major improvements this season alone) he could be a QB. The RG 3 comparisons are valid IMO & how his arm develops is key.
Then again, he's propably the best runner I've ever seen...you wanna know who's not playing QB in the NFL ever - I'll give you a hint - Denard Robinson.
The world is full of kings & queens who'll blind your eyes & steal your dreams - it's heaven & hell - Ronnie James Dio.
B.Miller will be drafted as a QB. When his feet are under him he throws a beautiful ball. He only half way done w/his 2nd season of college ball. Funny how people are expecting him to flop in the NFL.
Rather than start a new thread on this JT texted Michael Chung who works for the Ozone and told him its an ACL w slight tear in the meniscus but did not tear the MCL still sucks for the kid overall but better than hitting the triple
FWIW. One of my coworkers sons plays with JT at Rider...yes sadly I live in Wichita Falls. Anyway he says tOSU is "taking care of the surgery with the Dallas Cowboys team doctors". Again I'm not sure how reliable the guy is but I could see some truths to it. I did get to see him play this year and if he comes back 100% we have a great player on the way.
Sounds like good news. You have to take care of the future franchise.
@Buckeye_in_sec
As much of a Colts fan as I am, and as promising as Luck looks so far, I have a hard time classifying him as dominant just yet. I'm very hopeful however!
I understand the point you're making though. Rodgers is the only one on that list with a hint of mobility.
Still, it will be interesting to see what kind of impact Cam and RG3 can have in the league prior to Braxton entering the draft.

Jt has torn ligaments in his knee and messed up his meniscus he went and saw top notch doctors for the cowboys and they he should be back in 6 months, so you never know he might not have to red shirt. BTW im one of his recievers.
JT needs to have the surgery, enroll at OSU in January and start rehab with the OSU staff. This way he could get adjusted to classes, start learning the offensive system, and have the best medical staff take care of him.
@Brylanmccoy13
Always nice to have someone close to these players giving us this information. JT is a very talented QB, as I'm sure you can validate. However I think he would have redshirted regardless of whether or not he injured his knee. Coming in next year he will be the 4th QB on the depth chart. If he had all winter healthy, he may have been able to pass Cardale Jones if he progressed well enough. But coming in with an ACL injury he will almost certainly be number 4 and there's no reason for him to waste a year of eligibility as our 4th string QB.
Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite
I do agree with Triv. Learning a new Offensive playbook is a big task, and he'll get an opportunity to learn under Braxton and Guiton. Regardless, I hope JT recovers well.
Thanks for the info Brylan and id have to agree with Triv as this could end up being a blessing in disguise and make him an even more mentally tough kid always gotta stay positive in scenarios such as this.
Part of the reason spread QBs haven't succeeded in the NFL is that the offenses haven't evolved like college offenses.
This is changing. Washington is using packaged run/pass concepts with RG3. New England throws from the spread and runs no huddle. Houston runs a lot of outside zone runs (with the same OC that ran things when Vick was unstoppable in Atlanta)
Hopefully by the time Braxton us drafted there will be more NFL offenses that can utilize a running QB properly.
