We were told the reason we changed the end zone colors/lettering and block O at mid-field was due to the fact that the field turf company was yet to develop a gray that properly matched OSU's gray. Ok guys it's been several years now, time to make it happen. We are OHIO STATE. Our field used to look unique with the predominant use of gray, but it looks too similar to many others now...I know this was a complaint from the start but it's gone on too long...also felt like posting something less controversial than all the stuff about our D.

I actually like it the way it is with the scarlet endzones.
I hated the scarlet endzones at first, they used to be way too bright imo. Now they look great - love it.
Greg Jennings "I put my team on my back"
Being fairly new to Buckeye nation, I was unaware that the endzones used to be gray, so I read the headline of your post and thought you were referring to some Boise State-esque gray field. To that my response would have been "HELL NO."
I like the field the way it is now, but if they did have a correct gray color, it would probably look pretty sharp too.
Wow,,,, can't believe I'm alone on this. Go back and look at pics/video. The gray was awesome. Prevetbuck, the whole end zone wasn't gray, just the lettering "Ohio State" / "Buckeyes"...maybe I'm an old 40 but thought most fans still felt our gray was a part of our tradition even though our field look has changed several times over the last few decades.

Gray Turf?!?!?!??!?!
"if irony were made of strawberries, we' d all be drinking a lot of smoothies right now."
Ok Folks, compare. I like it w/ the Scarlet, it pops more:
Won't a couple of cans of spray paint solve the problem?
scarlet is better
Ohio Stadium used to have red lettering on the old astroturf. They used to have a scarlet and gray diamond pattern in the endzones in the 1960's. The gray lettering was only there when they put in real grass...and that was only for about 15 years.
Point is...time and change will surely show, how firm thy friendship, O-HI-O. Sh*t changes, and honestly it doesn't always suck.
Maybe they could change the white lettering to gray? Or at least the black outlines on the midfield logo and in the endzones?
Class of 2010.
Yeah, seeing the comparison, I like both of them, and the gray does look more classic. I doubt they'll go back to not having colored-in enzones though.
Agree w/Showthem: Would be kind of cool to keep everything the same (for me, including the black outlines on the letters), but to change the white lettering itself to gray.
Edit: If I could add anything, though, I'd love a gray/silver or scarlet field outline from the 25 yard-lines in the way Florida State has w/their red (or whatever you'd call that shade):
i like the scarlet better. i liked showthemohioshere's idea keep it scarlet with gray lettering.
mark may wins douchebag of the year... again
I like the field the way it is now, it's much more fresh looking & that probably helps to attract recruits. But maybe they should experiment more with Scarlet AND Gray in the endzone. I'm just not so sure that making the white letters more of a silver color would make "Ohio State" & "Buckeyes" really pop out in the endzone. It would probably have to be a grey endzone with scarlet letters. But since the school colors are "Scarlet & Grey", & not "Grey & Scarlet", I would think it's better to just follow the order of things & go with what we have now: Scarlet endzones.
It's 5 o'clock somewhere, & Michigan still sucks
Can someone find a pic of old bowl games where they did the gray/silver end zone with scarlet lettering (I think the gray was actually more of the silver like our helmets) it was sweet and unique!
D. Anthony
Yep the gray lettering would be cool with the scarlet backdrop in the endzones.
I always found the gray lettering to be kind of bland, but that's just my opinion. I've loved the scarlet endzones since they first changed to them.
It's all better than the astroturf years.
Naw no way keep the scralet endzones man! lol. Its looks so much better and updated. It also pops more and looks more exciting. The grey looks dull and boring...
The new turf, and it's not even close. I would however be stoked to see a throwback floor for the hoops team. How cool was St. Johns with the Block OHIO STATE on the one side?
I understand what you are going for b/c it really does look classic but i think it would be best suited with a mixture of the two. They will never go back to just gray though
"Winter is coming" - Urban Meyer
I like the scarlet and if they change it then my cornhole boards will no longer be accurate :)
We should strive to keep thy name, of fair repute and spotless fame...
(Also, I'm not a dude)
I like the scarlet, but I wish it wasn't so bright. The first time I saw the field, I was at the stadium for a game and couldn't remember what the old field looked like but knew I didn't like the new one.
If it were up to me I would have the diamond OHIO logo with the H and I overlapping integrated somewhere, maybe midfield? Somehow I couldn't find it on the internet.
I hope they keep it the way it is. Really like it.
I know there's a game saturday, and my ass will be there.
had the plain grass end zones with grey letters while in undergrad... like the new version much better, but maybe that's becuase i was too hammered in the student section to care ;)
GO BUCKS!
Hey does anyone else here like what Alabama or South Carolina does with the bushes along the stadium seating on the field. I don't know if the bushes would still be green in the Ohio weather but i would like something unique like that.
@ lljjgg. It's Garnet.
Leave that business to Georgia. I don't want to rip off anything from the south aside from kicking ass in football.
I know there's a game saturday, and my ass will be there.
^^^^ and their recruits!!!
and an upvote for you
I know there's a game saturday, and my ass will be there.
Between the hedges is so stupid. Who the hell ever came up w/ the idea? It's like backyard football when I was a kid. Also, I like both field patterns, but prefer the old school look with the green grass background and gray letters.
The reason the paint in the endzones was gray is because the old red paint they used when they switched from turf to grass in 1990 killed the grass under it, so they went with gray as an alternative. The way the endzone was painted in 2002 national championship game was perfect.
They not only changed the field after the 2006 season, but also the area surrounding it. It was an orangish red before, and now it is gray to match the concrete walls the stadium is made of.
All that being said, I would like to see the white changed to gray in the letters, but I believe Tress himself said that the white letters just popped more on the computer so that's why the decision was made.
One more thing, when the new field was being laid some photos were snapped that ironically showed the underside of the letters are gray, like they put them in upside down.
No gray lettering. That could turn away recruits.
"I like to kick Michigan's ass and chew bubble gum, and I'm all out of gum."
Gray might hurt recruiting but the scarlet is killing our defense. Pick your poison :)

Can we get an image of what this gray turf would look like, just for fun? Anyone computer savvy with software programs?
The scarlet looks better
scarlet is my choice
i also prefer the scarlet. I can't stand bare looking end zones aka notre dame
I'm not one to mindlessly follow the status quo, neither do I wish to toss aside tradition...I like the current scarlet just fine.

I like the scarlet w/white letters although grey letters look good too but im not so hot on the Tostitos in the middle of the field.
O H I O is the Buckeye State
The pic above is what I'd like to see the endzone changed to. Thanks D.Anthony. I do like the scarlet block O at midfield though. The gray one never connected at the 50, kind of looked like parenthesis from close up.
I just think when we changed to scarlet and white end zones we looked too similar to what Wisconsin and the other 30% of the teams that seem to use some sort of red were already using.
D. Anthony
I agree 100%!
I could live with what's in the Tostidos pic -- seems a reasonable compromise.
"The revolution will be televised."
Personally I love the field the way it is. My only complaint about the stadium upgrades is that I think it looks really bad that they didn't do a better job trying to match the new facing of the exterior to the older concrete face of the Shoe. I know they could have done a better job with that blending of the old and new. I am surprised that they haven't addressed that issue. To me it looks tacky.
Yes there are two Buckeyes in Ann arbor on this site!
At the time it was okay but looking back I think the gray on the field was kind of bland.
I like the field in the pic D. Anthony posted.
Call me crazy, but I'd keep the endzones the same as they are now and make the rest of the field gray. I mean why not? We all know it's not real grass, so why keep it green? Scarlet and Gray all the way, baby! :-)
Real fans stay for Carmen.
Just a random thought to be different wonder how the field would look if the kick off area had buckeye leafs or if the 0 in the numbers on the field were in block O ir buckeye leaves. Although I really don't have a complaint about the current field just throwing out an idea out of left field
Otrain...friends and I have discussed the use of buckeye leafs in those spotson the field...I think they are a great emblem that should be used more. I'd like to see them on the b-ball floor as well. They'd make a nice free throw circle area. Good call!
D. Anthony
If anyone is good at photoshop and has some free time they should mess around with that stuff on the field and post it. Unfortunately my photo editing skills mainly consist of copying and pasting into paint
Does anyone miss natural grass? I do. I miss seeing opposing QB's with stains on their uniforms, not to mention a little mud in the rain.
Dustin Fox was our leading tackler as a corner.... because his guy always caught the ball.
^^^ I sure do.
muddy football can only be seen at high school games these days
Loved the grass and mudd
O H I O is the Buckeye State
No pics found of the 1997 Rose Bowl but here is video:
1969 Rose Bowl.
Natural grass? I don't miss the divots and the lack of an ability to make a cut. 2006 ring a bell?
Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!

Both teams played on the same field, and OSU was not on it any earlier than tsun was.
lets do the WHOLE field in gray!!!!!!!!!!!
Keep the Scarlet, it's grown on me over the years.
JT
@hail2victors9 That feild was that way because it was sod that didn't root yet. That feild also took away the Buckeyes speed, so a +1 for your guys
O H I O is the Buckeye State
Crable tried to let up but slipped and drove his helmet into Smith on that personal foul call /S/
Just kidding, I'm just complaining to complain. Hell, denard got some rubber pellet from the field turf in his eye last year and had to come out for a few plays. It happens.

When I first saw the thread name, I thought it ment the whole field should be grey!! Hahaha. I actually really like the endzone of that fiesta bowl game. Scarlet backdrop with grey letters looks cool.
Ive been on the Buckeyes current feild and I gotta beleive those pellets have to get in the players eyes and mouths often. It would really suck if it were in the eye tho
O H I O is the Buckeye State
^^ It does. Someone at my school got one in his eye, and get a huge infection that went to his brain. He alomst died.
Lets go Boise style and make the field scarlet!
I can't shop, this is my attempt at paint. I like the gray letters, but the white letters do have more pop.

Like the Scarlet as opposed to gray. Stands out more and isn't too IMO.

Nobody is arguing that white isn't brighter (has more pop)...the point I was making I that I like our school colors more than I like Wisconsin's and Nebraska's. We are scarlet and GRAY. In the same time we took the gray off the home jerseys and off the field. What ever happensed to "Gray Pride"? :)
D. Anthony
Buckforlife -- props to your painting skills! I agree that the white letters pop more, but the gray letters on the scarlet endzone looks classic. I'd prefer that so we are not so much like Wisconsin.
I could go for that endzone buckforlife did if you take out the black stroke. There's something I loved about the old double stroke around the letters.
Buckforlife if that is with microsoft paint, holy crap. How did you do that?
I like the grey against the scarlet background. And let's bring back the grey stripes on the sleeves while we're at it.
And grass.
Yeah that was with MS paint. I don't post on here much, I think I had a harder time figuring out how to post it than I did painting it.

MAN 'O MAN, I can't even imagine going back to that drab gray. The white on scarlet is better by several miles in my opinion.
Call me an old man ,or superstitious, but since we ditched the grass and lost the gray in our jersey stripes things haven't been as good. Losing back to back titles/ Beanie hurt foot on turf/ Tressel gone/ worse on defense each year/ look like wisconsin and nebraska/ etc.
Not trying to be a negative nancy, i just notice these things. I think grass teams are tougher. Since Michigan installed turf they have regressed. Since the BCS was formed, no team that plays on artificial turf has won the championship. I'm just sayin'.
Dustin Fox was our leading tackler as a corner.... because his guy always caught the ball.
Did I see gray lettering in the end zones today?
D. Anthony
Buckforlife, I think I like it that way. Thanks for taking the time to doctor it up a bit
