Sure there were lapses, but I think the "Fire Fickell" fans can take the night off. Overall a much better performance by our D. Glimpses of the Silver Bullets again. Lots of people thinking we'd lose this one, but I felt good going in. I don't care what anyone says they still have Matt McGloin at QB. He has gotten much better sure, but he's still Matt McGloin - put on the pressure and everything should be fine! Great game tonight.

They really only gave up 10 points tonight. A blocked punt and a garbage time TD. A few blown coverages but PSU has good players and you can't expect to just win every 1 on 1
Defense was fantastic tonight--looked more like your classic Silver Bullets D.
I loved the amount of blitzing and the mixing of coverage we did tonight, I really hope they stay with that formula for the rest of this season and beyond!
I was very impressed with the defense tonight. I liked the pressure that was dialed up on the blitz plays. Didn't like our DB's getting turned around on double moves. Overall, great night defensively and a great win!
The defense played well. This wasn't the spread offense we have trouble with though.

I agree that we still have some things to get better at, but this reminded me more of what we have come to expect from our D at OSU.
I saw a couple of screen passes....1 was swatted down by bennett and the other gained 1 or 2 yards and there were 5 defenders there gangtackling
We have much to get better at, but considering we're playing a fullback at linebacker and have still improved defensively for two weeks in a row, I'm pretty sure we're alright.
I was never in the "Fire Fickell" camp, I was just in the group that wanted to see SOME KIND OF IMPROVEMENT. It seemed like the defense was getting worse every week during the first 7 games of the season. Now they've finally gotten better for two weeks in a row. That's all I wanted.
I'm confident we can play versus spread teams. What we had tonight was 2 things we've only had for short periods of time in other games: 1) Consistent intensity, and 2) Boren locking down the other LB position. I was amazed at how well he played. His pass coverage was a bit shaky at times, but it'll get better as he continues to learn the D. His run defense/tackling was fantastic.
The front four got excellent pressure, even without LB support. Roby was like caustic glue to his marks.

Yeah, Fickell earned some silence and a large pepperoni without sass this week. I did see the corners get turned around consistently too. Luckily McNugget didnt have the arm to take advantage.
i hope PSU enjoyed the Bucks pushing their program into a four year oblivion tonight. Keep waving those pom poms!
Indiana beat Illinois today. I expect us to retain Illibuck for another year easily.

i was most impressed with how our players tackled. defense is becoming more fundamentally sound. incidentally, did storm klein play today?
My only Fickell complaint is now, and has been, that Curtis Grant should be competent on a football field (which is not exactly within Luke's control). Well done tonight, D-men.

How about that defense? Overall, very, very good. I don't like garbage time points, but outside of that:
Tackling = good
Defense on screen passes = good
Pass defense = good - only a few sporadic plays here and there
Defense on 4th down = good
Run defense - good
I was pleased with what I saw. I was never in the "Fire Fickell" boat, but needless to say, we can stop that for now.

I thought we'd lose this game based off of the defenses past performances. I am thankful I was wrong. PSU was one dimensional and it made it easier on us. I like the blitzes that were dialed up. You don't have to worry about McGloin rolling out toward the sideline but if he sees you coming he panics and throws those McPicks so the choice to blitz in plain view was beautiful. I am glad the defense dialed it in tonight and would say that Fickell likely had a big part to do with that. I was a little less than thrilled about the garbage time touchdowns allowed but for the most part it was an excellent game plan with above average execution. Keep Boren at ML. Also, as to not appear like a total homer, we did get a lot of calls to go our way tonight. I saw quite a few holds that weren't called on us too. It's all part of the game I suppose. Kind of makes up for the shaft we have been receiving as of the last two weeks.
The blitzes were timed perfectly tonight. Great calls and excellent execution. Also glad to see us finally blowing up those Purdue style wide receiver screens tonight. Both of the ones they threw went for no gainers. Boren needs to stay at MLB. He is getting better every week.
i was in the fire fickell boat with one leg in... i didnt necessarily think he needed to be fired but i did think there needed to be urgency for something to change... the blitzes he was dialing up combined with the man coverage was a change im in huge favor of. good job d and good job bucks sittin pretty at 9-0
mark may wins douchebag of the year... again
The freshman linebackers still need to step up to provide depth, but the defense looked solid tonight overall.
Best Fickell compliment I saw was on BSD.
<sarcasm>But hey, the guy is incompetent so I'm sure it was Withers who implemented that.</sarcasm>

Another Fickell compliment on BSD.

^ Yeah, I saw those too and had to reread them a couple of times to make sure my eyes weren't deceiving me. I thought overall the commentary over at BSD was at a level of civility and rationality I didn't think they were capable of.

The front seven came to play tonight. Plain and simple. And roby...just wow. That kid is simply ridiculous. Boren seems to be growing more and more comfortable in the mlb role. And our d line was owning the line of scrimmage all night. Safe to say whatever the coaches are doing during practice is making an impact on these kids. If they hadn't checked out halfway through the 4th quarter, the score would have been indicative of the absolutely dominating performance the defense had for 50 minutes tonight. I'm happy with what I saw...staying home on the screens, a gang of silver helmets around the ballcarrier on every run. And our big boys up front taking ownership of the trenches. The d line was solid all night, and the o oline just gradually asserted themselves until it was clear their d line was gassed, worn down and thoroughly owned. Were there things that could have gone better? Yes. But overall, they impressed me
