watched the first part of the game at work and listened to the game on my way home in the car, the OSU announcers said thats a weird time to call a timeout for Nebraska (right before OSU was to punt) OSU tried for the fake punt and was stopped. do you guys think Nebraska knew something was up or something tipped them off....it was an odd time to call a timeout for Nebraska

One thing was for sure: Jim Tressel had a heart attack during the play.

As a former coach, I can attest to the fact that there was a potential that Nebraska saw something strange, although it could have been just the opposite. Our staff may have seen something before the timeout that led them to their decision to fake. Without seeing it again it's hard to say. Nebraska may have called timeout for disorganization on their own side. Would love to see it again, but I'm certainly glad it had little impact on the outcome of the game itself.
Alex Boones liver was a former coach?! That puts a very strange picture in my mind this morning. Thanks for the unintentional laugh.
the play was perfect, other than Fragel getting thrown to the side and not holding his block. No one saw it coming but the guy who read if perfectly and owned Fragel.
You are welcome, and yes my sense of humor is a bit twisted.
am stiil not sure if we hgot a bad spot. BAsil rooled over a player on the ground.
I thought they called time-out because they had 12 guy on the field.
thats what i thougt i thought basil rolled right over the nebraska defender and wasnt down until like the 33
The guy that made the tackle on the punt fake was Storm Kleins guy.
Yeah the play was actually perfect besides the blocker who got manhandled. Hold that block for 1 sec longer and the kicker would have gotten 5 more yards easily...
It wasn't Fragel who got abused, it was Storm Klein. Didn't hold his block long enough.
Also, 5 (Camren Williams I believe) looked around and wandered upfield without blocking anyone.
One more block and that goes for 20 yards.
Love the fact that every team we play is going to have to think about that now.
I think that we could have gotten the first easily had he run more toward the sideline. The block might not have been great, but he ran right at the Nebraska defense. Go back and watch a replay the left sideline was wideopen.
I thought we barely got the first down on that fake punt. I, too, thought that Buchanan didn't hit the ground until he rolled over the Nebraska defender (think it was #21), so Buchanan actually had another 1 - 1 1/2 yards. They should have at least re-spotted the ball. Strange officiating.

Ah, Klein, my mistake...
I dont think Basil was the one running the ball. Our punter is Buchanan.
you're right, LABUCK --- I mixed those two up. It was Buchanan, thank you

Seemed like that Nebraska guy was spying. He went right after the punter. Also, punter should have just taken off, not done the full leg kick fake.
BUT, I was mad at the spot. Punter rolled over the defender as he was tackled and wasn't down, by my view, until about a yard or so further than the spot. Might have been a first down otherwise.
@ RDubs yep. run at an angle to the left and it's a first. Also, Bucks43201, agreed. Spot was incorrect IMO.
I personally thought the fake punt actually worked & they should have been given a first down. Punter was tackled but his body was not on the ground where he was marked down. He rolled on top of the tackler & should have been marked about a yard farther than where he was which would have given him the first...
edit: my bad Avail - didn't see you already wrote about this.

No worries, Poison Nuts...I did the same thing- someone else had already mentioned it too above, but I posted about it too.
Glad I wasn't the only one who noticed. Of course I'm biased, but I thought the officiating made some bad calls last night. They did get that NEbraska
interceptionincomplete pass review right, though.I saw the replay and it looks like Nebraska had only 10 guys on the field and that's why the timeout was callled and man did Storm Klein get abused.
Like some of you have said, I really think that fake kick cost us the first down. I mean take the first couple steps like you are punting but don't actually fake the kick stroke. (what do I know though!!)
I watched the replay a bunch of times, I thought his butt touched the ground on the tackle and if it didnt, it was so close that they could not overturn. Very close.
EDIT: Successful or not, I love that we went for it in that situation.
The ressult of the play doesn't really matter, We saw last night that our coach has the intestinal fortitude to run a fake punt deep in his own territory. It makes me very optimistic about the future of OSU football. This is grown man football and how you win multiple championships.
Also think if Buchanan had not feigned a kicking motion and instead just ran, he would have easily picked up the first.

Our punter's butt hit the ground before he rolled over the defender. That is what was shown on the replay and why the official review confirmed the spot of the ball. I thought the same thing at first, that he wasn't down til he rolled over, but he was.
^^^^ Indeed BODAST. Finally a coach that is going to roll the dice and give his players the opportunity to make big plays. I never liked the old mindset of cautious and conservative play calling.
