I thought he was pretty fair/reasonable.
Offense - B
Defense - A
Needs - B+
Impact - A
Overall - B+
Luginbill's Summary: Very sound, strong class. Doesn't feel like there's a difference maker at the QB position (recruit-wise), could use a standout OLineman yet.
^I felt that he was pretty complimentary being that we're only a little more than perhaps 2/3rds finished with our class (and could be adding some of those pieces yet, Dorian Johnson for example if he commits to us, that Luginbill felt we lacked). I don't feel like we needed to pick up a difference-making QB recruit yet, nor that Urban was necessarily looking for one from the 2013 class. I was suprised he gave us an A for Defense being that we still lack a top-notch LB or Safety recruit (which could come in the form of Mike Mitchell and/or Vonn Bell), which is certainly an area of need. But he is, understandably, very high on Cam Burrows, Eli Woodard and Joey Bosa.

I too right now would give the class a B+ but expect them to get an A. I think we get Mitchell, Elder, Johnson and maybe even Foster we will be top 3 in the nation.
Casey
I think Hill will be good also, he was a good pickup. But you're right, we are desperate at safety and linebacker. Everytime I see Christian Bryant or Johnson I cringe...
No love at all for JT Barrett? Even with an injury, he seemed like a pretty nice difference maker. And, like Kenny Guiton, has led his team to victory in the waning moments a few times. Maybe he's not top 2 like Braxton was, but I think JT Barrett could have a big impact for OSU down the road.
Burrows could end up at safety though, correct? We also have a few freshmen who could step in the Star role next year if they beat out Pittsburgh Brown.
Bryant and Barnett will likely be the starters at safety as seniors and either Brown or someone new will step in at Star/nickel. The key positions we struggle at now are Star and MLB.
interesting he did not once mention linebackers.
I think when he gives the defense an A he means the total quality of the talent on that side rather than filling specific current needs. Hopefully we round out the class addressing a couple more need spots but we have a talented group so far.
@DSK: I've heard the same thing about Burrows (and Woodard at one point). The only thing is, I would love to have them both at Corner because I see them as 3/4-year shutdown corners. If we could somehow swing Gareon Conley over from Michigan, or if Armani Reeves steps up the way he has the potential too (and gets his health back, which I have no doubt he will), I'd be all for moving Burrows to Safety.
@HCA: I was waiting for him to mention that weakness, as well haha. Sometimes I wonder if those outside the OSU family are as aware of our weakness at LB as we are? They have to be. But to me, that alone would bump us down to a B for "Needs" until we fill that void (though I'm optomistic we will).
I saw this yesterday on ESPNU... He didn't show any love at all to JT Barrett and he wasn't impressed with our offensive pick-ups so far. Wait til we add in a Tony Stevens, Shelton Gibson, James Quick, and a Dorian Johnson. Throw in Mike Mitchell, Vonn Bell, and McMillian on defense... We will be a top 3 class. If this class goes undefeated and handles scUM in November in front of all of those top notch recruits... LOOK OUT! It will send a snowball affect through our recruiting.
We also already have Doran Grant and Roby (maybe for 1 more year) at CB.
Also, injuries to Bogard and Murray could hurt more next year than this year in terms of DB depth and someone stepping up to play the Star position.
Overall at this point it's a fair grade, but agree with some of you. The class could most definitely move from a B+ to an A when all is said and done.
JT
We did pull four 4-star LBs and one 3-star in last year's class. Maybe that is being factored into his analysis of our need at that position. We are thin this year, but given a year of development, maybe we will be in good shape next year -- if these LB recruits pan out better than other OSU LB recruits have in the past four years. Or maybe he's grading simply on the ridiculous DL and DB talent, which is probably closer to the truth.
Class needs LB's and 1-2 solid OL to be considered great class for what Urban is looking for.
OSU gets Vonn Bell and there will be no reason for Cam to move over to safety! He will be fine right at corner. Michael Jenkins was a big CB and he was perfectly fine in college. Let him move to safety in the NFL!
I am surprised of the little love of JT and not a bigger concern for LB. JT may not be one of the top QBs in the class (top 3 or 4) but he is tailor made for Urban's offense!
Not a bad analysis! I bet the tune would be much different if Dorian Johnson, Vonn Bell, Mike Mitchell, Quick and Gibson come on board. or really any combo of those positions like that.
We really lack an OL or LB core, but I still think by the end of the class we will get at least one good LB. We are full of playmakers this year. Last year we were full of core players. I kinda love Urban's recruiting style.
Malcom as opposed to Michael. I think everyone has made that slip with two of the greats of the last 15 years. They will end up at whatever position works best for the team. Just speculating that we need someone to play star and safety in 2 years whereas we have grant and maybe roby at cb.
its not even close to being over top 3 class by the time its over
mark may wins douchebag of the year... again
I think if we win today and the MeatChicken game, we add Quick (hopefully, was wishing Cincy'd knock L'ville off last night), Stevens, V. Bell, D. Johnson, Mitchell, and Trey Johnson if we stop at 23. Add either Gibson or Worley if we make it to 24. Urban will flip someone. Trey Johnson doesn't wanna live in mediocrity in Auburn. That'd definitely make us #3 or #2..
Burrows is not a CB. Anyone who paid attention to all the camps would certainly agree.
@Scarlet Buckeye
Cam Burrows made the All-Opening team as cornerback I believe. Assuming he has the instincts, I agree he'd be better suited at safety. But he would be a very good college corner as well IMO
Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite
re Burrows: maybe someone with a better schematic background than I have can clarify this, but I think the Buckeyes want to run a Cover-4 defense now, and in Cover-4 you want safeties with good cover skills, basically big CBs playing the safety position. Sounds perfect for Burrows.
I haven't seen a ton of film on Burrows, but yes his cover skills would make him a very good safety prospect in the cover 4 pass defense. Only reservations I would have about an immediate switch to safety is in run support. Again, haven't watched a lot of film on him but safety requires a bit more in run support than corner does. Yes corner's still have to be able to step up against the run outside, but safety is the last line of defense for up the middle runs and Burrows would need to be able to make those plays before I'd be comfortable with the switch (not saying he isn't prepared to be a safety yet, as i think he has the potential to be a very good corner or safety)
Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite
Burrows definitely has the size/frame to play Safety. I'm not surprised he got offered by every major SEC program, to me he's the prototypical SEC CB (Size + Speed + Strength), which is why I kind of hate to lose him at that position. I'd love if we could get Vonn Bell so that there wouldn't be a question (unless they'd play one at FS, the other at SS). We still have (my guess) another year with Roby, and certainly at least another year with Doran Grant, so I guess CB isn't as great a position of need as Safety is for us (where we're very light after Bryant and Barnett leave next year [assuming they don't after this one]).
If we can grab Vonn Bell, imagine what our secondary could look like in 3 years
CB: Burrows, Woodard, Reeves, Murray
S: Bell, Thompson, Tanner, Powell
Star: Lee, Bogard
And that's not even counting who we could bring in between now and then
Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite
