PSU - Disrupt the Clap

Ran across the fact that the PSU faithful are working on a way to disrupt the OSU offense by timing their clapping in the stands. No wonder everyone looks at them in wonder. Good luck with that.

Does the offense really time itself based on the sound of the clap? Or does the center watch Miller's motion, and the line and receivers watch for the ball movement?  If it was based on the actual audible sound it would seem kind of useless in a crowd-noise heavy environ.

The way I understand it, the center actually does the audible snap count at the line. The clap is for him to know Braxton is ready.

@Dotcom, My wife is a Genetic Counsellor and she has drilled it into me that the R word is an offensive word to use. Kind of like not using "that's gay" as a put down. So i understand your comment and actually expected it. I also expected the downvote(s) for the use.

but I had to stick with the actual phrase pertaining to the movie and thought even though the word is offensive, was appropriate for the topic at hand because really, if they are trying to do that, they are a bit MR! As if the center couldn't tell the sound of a clap from the stands to a clap from behind him. Totally different than the sound of a crowd creating so much white noise that the clap couldn't be heard.

I actually hope they try the clap thing as opposed to just making so much noise it is hard to hear it. I think it would actually mess up their defense more than OSU's offense.

I don't fret downvotes. I speak my mind and most of the time it doesn't warrant a downvote so the occassional ones don't bother me! but thanks for the upvotes guys! Makes me feel like this...

Oyster's picture

From what I have read, the clap is just a signal to the center to start the actual snap count, so it shouldn't have any effect, even if they can get it organized to begin with.

(And now once I have read up from the bottom, I see that somebody else has made the same comment about the snap count.)

Don't freak out over downvotes. This is why I keep campaigning that people need to vote more in general. That way people will care less about a few downvotes. You get one, it's no big deal. If you get 20, maybe you should realize you might have done something against the policy. But either way, if everyone got upvotes all the time no one would be bothered by a few downvotes. VOTE MORE! Don't be so stingy with the upvotes

Also, we need a new policy where votes are like Fight Club. The first rule of votes is you don't talk about votes. Take it to the Forum under Site Topics or message a mod if you have a complaint, but in general, just realize sometimes people will downvote you for stupid stuff and you shouldn't worry about it. If it becomes a larger problem than a couple downvotes, like I said, take it to the Mods/Forum to figure it out.

Dear Penn State fans, Players, and coaches,

Between Mauti, and then unknown DT who doesn't know the Guapo, and now this-is there a more unlikeable band of douchebags then Penn State? I get it though, you all had a really, really bad summer and wanted to play the victim card. You lost you beloved criminal of a coach, you lost the respect of every team and fan in the nation, you lost whatever your lost. So now you've won a few games (admittedly in convincing fashion) and your pride has returned. Its good to be a Penn State fan and player again because even though you can't kick a field goal and have beaten glorified JV squads, you're happy again. And that's awesome.

Enter big bad Ohio State. The team that, for decades now, you have tried to force some sort of hated rival status upon, despite the majority of OSU fans and players thinking you just aren't that big of a deal. They are undefeated, coming to your newly re engergized house so you start popping off at the mouth. You don't know who Carlos Hyde is, you call OSU's situation different because the kids on this roster (1 still to be exact) cheaters and your fans have the brilliant idea to disrupt the timing mechanism in OSU's offense....you are ready for victory.

And you know what? So is Urban Meyer. So are the Ohio State Buckeyes. Despite everything you as Penn State fans have wanted to say and do to change the fact that you're all a bunch of creepy, weird people who STILL worship a rapist enabler, this football season hasn't changed anything. So hold your heads up high! Take pride in your team. After all, they are winning football games. Enjoy it. Urban is coming to town soon to burn your pathetic, Moxie lead team to the ground. Enjoy watching your beloved heroes get cut to pieces in front of your very eyes. I know 'turning away' is the default mode for you guys any time something ugly or bad comes up but be sure to watch this Saturday as Ohio State reminds you exactly where you stand in this 'rivalry'.

Signed,

BrewstersMillions.

@Lou, I've been there for a few games, and it gets really loud in there at times. The best way to shut them up is to get up by 3 scores and just shut down their offense, which is something that the good guys are very capable of doing. I think 3 consecutive pick 6s should do the trick. MOXIE!!!!

I think that the fans won't make a difference. The center knows the direction the clap is coming from, it is why we have two ears. Further, fans clap all the time. A handful of fans, trying to clap at the same time, at the right time just won't work.

GoBucks713's picture
GoBucks713 on 24 Oct 2012 - 1:53pm #

I thought the clap wasn't really the signal to snap the ball, but the signal to start the countdown to snap. From what I read somewhere it's the center that dictates when the ball is snapped.

What a disgrace, PSU fans taking advantage of "home field"?

Don't they realize every school in the country sits quietly on their hands while the opposing team has the ball and would never cheer loudly, wave floppy fingers, or ring cowbells?

rdubs's picture
rdubs on 24 Oct 2012 - 3:11pm #

Honestly I am not really sure how they would pull it off.  If they clap with him, then it will be one really loud clap.  If they clap at random times then it won't sound like Braxton clapping and no one will be confused.  If they just clap in unison a lot of times it will be obvious whose claps are whose.  Their best bet is to just be really loud to make it hard to hear the clap and therefore hard to hear the count by the center.  I am pretty sure this has been done in some loud and hostile environments and hasn't been a big issue so I am not too concerned.

However if I am them, I see no reason not to try to get an advantage, that's what playing at home is all about.  And maybe if they are busy clapping they won't throw piss at our band...

Squirrel Master's picture
Squirrel Master on 24 Oct 2012 - 2:57pm #

well also not to mention Braxton doesn't actually clap his hands each time he makes the motion. Sometimes he fakes the clap hoping to get someone offsides or disrupt the snap count so the D can't hone in on it.

Set your avi
spqr2008 on 24 Oct 2012 - 3:57pm #

And the fact of the matter is that everyone would have to clap at slightly different times (because there are so many people in a big area, and with who knows what kind of acoustics) nanoseconds apart for all of the sound waves to arrive at a specific point at a specific time.  Is there an app for that?

Bolt's picture
Bolt on 24 Oct 2012 - 4:04pm #

@bukfan

I don't think that it's so much people criticizing them for making noise...rather this is just really really dumb. How are they going to coordinate everyone to clap at the same time first of all. Secondly, I think there's a pretty big distinction of a clap coming from 5 yards directly behind you and an echo of a clap coming from hundreds of feet away. Third of all the clap itself is just an indication to the center that the QB is ready. Once he sees or hears the clap the center then makes the snap call at the line. Lastly, just being normally loud would be much more distracting and make things harder than trying to simulate a clap that is nothing more than an indication to the center that the QB is ready to start the actual count. Even if it was effective all it would take is just switching the pre-count indicator from a clap to the QB reaching down to his knee like a lot of teams do.

Set your avi
kr66osu on 24 Oct 2012 - 4:10pm #

I'm pretty sure the center will be able to tell the difference between Miller/Guiton clapping right behind him compared to thousands of students clapping really far away from him...

This idea is a huge stretch and I think it's just going to make them look kind of stupid rather than even coming close to actually working. It would be much more effective to just be as loud as possible, but even then they could easily just switch to something else besides a clap to signal.

Bolt's picture
Bolt on 24 Oct 2012 - 4:12pm #

This is as much of a stretch as Ohio State trying to color coordinate the stadium based on section numbers for whatever game that was this season....as if the thousands of second hand ticket purchasers are going to base their ticket purchase on the color of their shirt that day.

Ya, I'm not mad for them being loud. Its within their right. I'm mad at their rediscovered arrogance, the notion that this will have any bearing on the game, and at their over all level of hero worship for Michael Mauti, who by my estimation is that dude in high school who drove the raddest car, had the hottest chicks, beat up all the nerds and then at the 10 year reunion wore his letterman jacket and was plus 60 pounds.

Of course, his moment in the sun was a little beyond high school but the larger point stands. PSU fans love them some D-Bags.

I hope OSU beats them by eleventy gabillion points, but I'll settle for Matt McGloin peeling himself off of the turf 20-25 times.

I'm pretty sure thousands of fans screaming their heads off is more distracting to the offensive line and snap count than trying to fake a clap that doesn't even signify the start of the play, espcially in a place as loud as Beaver Stadium. If they actually manage to make it halfway convincing (which they won't), they'd probably end up confusing their defense more than OSU's offensive line.

Since we're on the subject, did anyone notice that Kenny G's clap was elongated, and he faked a lot of his claps (definitely a higher proportion than Braxton)? Kenny's clap almost looked like he was attempting to lift off the ground or swim or something (lots of elbow bend). Braxton may be the loudest clapper in America though.

This is so freaking stupid it just makes me laugh.  Do these fans actually think that Linsley is going to be confused by claps from hundreds of feet away.  Something tells me he will be able to discern a clap from 3 yards behind him quite easily.  Unless the defense is clapping on the field I don't think it will have one single iota of importance.  Knock yourselves out goons.

I didn't see that...however something like that would be infinitely harder at an Ohio State game. We can't even pull off a whiteout/sea of scarlet or whatever. it's a bigger stadium in a bigger city with many more second hand ticket sales. That's essentially what kills it dead on the spot at Ohio Stadium. Definitely not saying it wouldn't be awesome if pulled off though.
