Corn Elder Vs. Ryan Timmons...

I just wanted to gauge what other members here at 11W had to say about their preferred player... Most of us are assuming between 5 (minimal) and 7 (maximum) players left to accept in the 2013 recruiting class. To me, this leaves the 'ATH' position as an outlying extra in the class (with LBs and WRs being the greatest need, Vonn Bell our reserved schollie, and OL ranking slightly higher if the target is worth it [D. Johnson/Dawson]). Both Timmons and Elder have great highlight tapes and put up spectacular numbers each week. I like the fact that Timmons has a bigger build (185lbs vs 170lbs) and is focused solely on football... Elder's desire to play basketball distracts from what we need... An all-in football player. But Elder seems to play tougher competition and still put up monster stats. Thoughts?

@HOLLYWOODBUCKS, I don't think we'd have the scholarship room to take both (or Timmons would have an offer by now)... Also have to think if Urban's putting an APB out for tough guys, the defense might be his biggest recruiting focus right now...

I have a 2 week ban talking about one on your list but I have also seen Elder. I think 170 might be more like 160 but that kid is very shifty and as tough as any 200# in HS. My only concern would be the amount of weight he needs to gain may slow him down. Personally I like him and he is 100% tough as nails. I do not remember if he caught a pass the two games I saw but Im sure he could. He gets alot of carries.

Timmons. I watched the last game that Elder played. He had a huge night, but it looks like he has a pretty good supporting cast. He's a special talent, don't get me wrong. Timmons looks to be doing the majority of it by himself. Great vision, and thats hard to coach. Plus, the kid really wants to play here. I hope it works out and there's room for him in this class.

I miss the days of teddy ball game. Taking it to the house anytime he touched the ball. These two can do just that .Hell i would offer RT Just so he could return kicks and punts. He wouldnt even need a wedge . Speed kills get em URB.

I posed the question earlier, but I don't think it ever got answered.  Would the staff accept Elder's commitment if he called to commit or would they ask him to wait?  He seems like the same type of player as Timmons.  I would say Gibson, Quick, Stevens, North, and LaRue are higher on the board IMO...

@Buckeye_In_SEC... I would agree the WRs are higher on the board (and they probably should be). I wish we could get North, Quick, and Elder (my personal preference), but would still be very happy w/ Stevens, Gibson, and Timmons...

I would have no problem with Stevens, Gibson, Timmons... Those 3 are all skill players.  Stevens is a long, tall WR... Gibson is a medium build speedy WR... and Timmons is a slot guy who can go as a RB or slot... He could be used in returns also... Those 3 guys would be great pulls in my opinion.

Elder does not have ryan t speed period. I watched his whole game the otber nite.He is one tough sob for no bigger than he is .Seems like he perfers to run up the middle .And always made postive yards . I saw ryan t just smoke everyone at FNL .After getting there butts worked off for 4 hrs.He smoked em all including gibson who a lot of people want.

There is no way Elder has a basketball offer. If he does be ready for a few dismal BB years. He couldnt play for Dayton or Wright State. Football I do like him.

I would take Timmons since he makes plays in space and has great speed and agility.  I think Elder would get injured because you cant be that small and run that hard in college.  You can get away with it in HS but not college.

I hate the thing everyone has against size. I would take timmons, elder and gibson first. all of meyer's playmakers at florida were small and fast. percy, demps, rainey (~160lbs) deonte thompson, brandon james (~5'8) mike gillislee, andre debose. now translate that to ohio state in a few years= jalin marshall, zeke elliot, taivon jacobs, ryan timmons, shelton gibson, thad snodgrass, corn elder

Let me just ask this.....Would Elder get a football schollie or a basketball schollie?????  If he got a B-Ball scholarship wouldn't he be a walk-on for football and not count against the football scholarship count?

Set your avi
WayCraKen on 22 Oct 2012 - 11:37pm #

In Theory or Shall I say Practical summation. There are many more receivers offered than what would ever be considered to take. CORRECT?  So with that said why would you put more weight on a kid with an offer over one that does not have one yet?  By Player RT not being mixed in with several of these kids getting offers might in fact be a first sign of respect.

This might sound crazy but hear me out. Lets just say coaches really want JQ or TS along with RT and SG. (Total of 3). They may be throwing out these offers to many other players with a primace that this may apply the pressure on the recruits they want knowing some of these offers are not likely to evolve meaning if tOSU gets that #1 they are looking for they will then pursuit others that may not even be offered yet knowing that other recruit will accept quickly which would in essence disturb the recruiting strategy.

Call me an optimist but in my mind that may be whats happening.

I don't think Urban would let him do both.  Just a personal opinion.  I'd rather have Timmons if Elder is going to want to play 2 sports.

The basketball thing is something that A LOT of commits say (pryor was convinced he was going to play both).  All of Elder's bball offers are from mid-major programs.  He won't be getting a scholarship from tOSU for bball.  I'm sure if he decides to come to Ohio St for football he will have a meeting with Matta (why not?) but will quickly realize that the commitment level for football is too much.

For questions about scholarships, that would not work.  I do not know the precise wording, but for duo-sport athletes the scholarship counts towards the sport with the greater number of overall available scholarships.  This prevents schools from having dummy sports programs to stockpile "walk-ons" for football.

That should clear up things about his OSU Bball offer...if he doesn't have one yet...he will.

Scholarship would be a football scholarship. Always counts against the sport where more total schollies are given.

If he plays basketball at OSU it will not be in a contribution type of role other than practice unless OSU plans to take a major step down. For Tennessee High School ball he is ok but a Major D1 basketball player he is not. Seriously he probably wouldnt start for Georgetown College in Ky.

He should focus only on football taking advantage during that period getting bigger and stronger. Basketball would be a detriment to his football career

Triv's picture
Triv on 23 Oct 2012 - 2:38pm #

He won't get a basketball scholarship for two reasons:

1) As stated by myself and several other, his scholarship goes to the team with more available scholarships (in this case, football)

2) He simply isn't OSU caliber in basketball. He would be a solid player on a mid major maybe, but not major D1

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

It's a little clearer than the one I posted last week.

I think the fact Timmons WANTS TO BE A BUCKEYE answers the original question.

Air Corn. All day, all night. Stud playmaker who plays stiff competition. Matched up very well against 5* Jalen Ramsey.

Neither. We already have 2 guys in this class to play slot/hybrid position. I don't want 5 receivers in this class. Give me 1-2 more guys that can play out wide. Stevens and Quick woud be ideal for me.

@urbz. Corn was never matched against Ramsey but once he broke through Ramsey was rarely close by. Additionally Quick burned Ramsey earlier this year continuously. Many thinks Ramsey is one of those way over rated. Didnt you think overall Team speed of Brentwood is very slow.

@buckeyes125  you are clever!  Seriously though Elders basketball plans beyond HS should be dashed. RT is better at BB than Elder but neither has a chance in Pros and both have a chance at NFL.

They look equally gifted to me on film. So, I think it comes down to intangibles...heart, character, maturity, will to win. That's where you have to trust the coaches. Either way, best of luck to both of them.

They are both on teams that are doing well and both have put the teams on their back when they had to. You might have to further that tie breaker. Vertical leap RT has 42". I bet they tie on that one too lol.

So Timmons runs a 4.3 and has a 42" vertical? Doubtful, but I'll take your word for it I guess. He should have gone to Nike's SPARQ combine. He would have destroyed Mitchell's record setting results. He would have been fastest guy there and have had highest vertical.

Back to the topic though, If I had to take one of the two, I would take Timmons. He has more experience at WR. I've only seen Elder at RB.

Bucksnut13's picture

Take both, along with shelton gibson. Can never have enough playmakers. I could definitely see our wr/rb corps being this next year.

outside WR's- D. Smith, Philly Brown, Shelton Gibson

RB- Hyde, R. Smith, Zeke, Elder

Hybrids (inside receivers/ball carriers)- J. Marshall, Timmons

Elder is ranked the 128th best basketball player in his class by 247, and has a composite rank of 179 by the industry.

Anyone saying he wouldn't play at small schools need to go get a brain activity scan, because that just doesn't make sense. He plays much tougher HS competition than Timmons, is a better athlete, as shown by basketball, and is ranked and offered as such.
