College Team vs. Pro Team

When my college team loses, it's like a punch to the gut.  Luckily we haven't lost this year, but it always seems to take time to recover from it when it happens.  I never have the same feeling with my pro team, and as a Lions fan, I get punched in the gut often.  Does anyone else feel this way, or is a pro loss harder on you?

As a Browns fan losing is what is expected so no punch in the gut feeling for me.  However this weeks loss to the Colts pissed me off because the Browns were the better team.  When tOSU loses it stings pretty bad and basically ruins my weekend so there is definitely a difference to me.  I am a huge Cleveland fan but much more dedicated to the Buckeyes!

As a Browns fan, I'm more use to losing than I am winning. In fact I rarely watch most of the games and often look at the box scores after the game thinking, did we lose? The pattern of Buckeye win and Browns lost has become mundane but when the Browns win, that's like the Cherry on the top. If OSU lose, I'm depressed and if its to a team I hate (Wisconsin or Michigan) I have a hard time functioning for the next week. So to answer your question, dealing with a Browns lost is not as bad as dealing with a Buckeyes lost.

Ohio State's band SLAUGHTERED Michigan's band. If this were a football game, it would have been Florida State vs. Savannah State. - SB Nation following OSU vs. UM 2012

I was just talking about this yesterday with a buddy of mine.  I'm a Bengals fan, and I've finally realized not to expect anything out of them.  So, when they lose, I'm still able to go about my day like a normal human being.

Not even close to the same with the Bucks.  No matter the kind of year, I fully expect to be celebrating a win after each game, and when they lose it completely takes it out of me.  During the 05-06 season, I remember when we lost at happy valley and ruined any hopes of a NC appearance.  My roomates and I had plans to go to several parties to celebrate that night, but after the loss, all we could do was sit on the deck, fighting back tears, and drowning our sorrows.

A loss for college team is a lot worse than for an NFL team. If a college team loses, their title hopes are pretty much over. In the NFL, a team could lose 6 games and still win the Super Bowl.

I'm a DIEHARD Ohio State fan and I truly feel those wins and losses. I enjoy the NFL and do have favorite teams (Jets and Titans) but I guess since I didn't "grow up" with an NFL team, their losses don't really affect me much.

It is always worse when the bucks lose because the browns lose every weekend almost. I root for them to win and hope but never really expect it like I do with tOSU. I get so mad after the buckeyes lose that sometimes I wont watch any sports TV or go on any sports websites till they win again.

I'm a Bengals fan, so professional football is a masochistic love for me.  Buckeye football, on the other hand, is life.  It's my obsession, my passion, hell, it's my religion.  That Purdue game almost ruined my entire weekend; and by the time that pass sailed out the back of the endzone on fourth-and-four in overtime, I was in such a state of euphoria it felt unreal.

Sure, I'll get emotional like that for other sports: during playoff games (a rare event for a Cincinnati sports fan) I'm an absolute wreck.  But therein lies the rub:  this season will have no playoffs, no January one-off to satiate my fandom until late August--and yet, I'm as invested in this team as I have ever been.  Sure, I might rationalize a loss by saying "Well, we couldn't win it all, anyways." but that doesn't mean it will hurt any less.

It's a curse to love a sport like college football above all others, the seasons are almost comically short.  Twelve to fourteen games is all you're allowed, until you go right back into that seemingly endless offseason--and unlike any other sport, every game most certainly does matter.  Alas, even this season--one where the NCAA tried to pre-emptively strip our team's chance to reach its potential, and thus our joy in reveling in it--I can't help but feel inexorably intertwined to the team's weekly performance.

It might be crazy, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

When it comes to football, I am 98% Buckeye, 2% Steeler. I seriously get more upset if the players on my fantasy football team underperform than if the Steelers lose.

I never really followed sports till my senior year of High School. I was debating on what college I wanted to go to and decided on Ohio State. This was my 02/03 year of High School by the way. I decided to start following the buckeyes since I knew OSU was a big football school. That was obviously the year we won the National Championship and it was a great ride. I eventually graduated in March of 2011 (took a 3 year vacation) and have never missed watching a buckeye game during all that time. I truly feel like Ohio State is a part of me.

Now I am originally from the Dayton area. My Dad is a browns fan so I grew up watching them but was never into them. I always like the Bengals more because they were only an hour drive away. I consider myself a Bengals man footballwise, however there is no competition between them and the buckeyes! Buckeye for life!

A Buckeye loss is certainly harder, and I can relate to the Bengals and Browns fans posting on here being a Buccaneer fan myself.  Being bottom of the barrel year after year sort of sets you up for no big expectations, therefore no big let down when the losses outweigh the wins at the end of the season.

If the Buckeyes lose I am distraught and life as usual ceases to exist for a certain amount of time.

If the Browns lose, it's called Sunday.

Except for a few outliers, NFL teams are all fairly evenly matched. The margins between most of teams are fragile and razor thin. With Peyton Manning, the 2010 Colts went 10-6. Without him in 2011, they went 2-14.

If we didn't know better, we might almost think that the won/loss outcomes of NFL games were decided by a coin toss.

So, if you get upset at losing a coin toss, you might also get upset when your NFL team loses.

I think we get worked up over Buckeyes losses because every game counts in the NCAA... Wasn't it just a few years ago we had a NFC West team make the playoffs with a below .500 record?  You can lose 6-7 games in the NFL and still make the playoffs.  I'm from TN and have become accustomed to the Titans being average so it doesn't bother me that much.  I get really worked up over the Buckeyes losing mostly because they lost, but I also have to hear a bunch of SEC rhetoric from friends and co-workers.

I used to care and get all bent out of shape when the Buckeyes lost..The 2 natty title game loses and last year made me immune to it now though. I have no control over the outcome so I take it for what it is.

@Fido:  Perhaps you are right, but it doesn't make the (Browns) losses any easier for me to take.  Yes, NFL teams are more evenly matched, which in my mind makes it even more gut-wrenching when a game turns on one or two plays.

So I get depressed when the Browns lose, because they (usually) could have won, but I get mad when the Buckeyes lose, because they (usually) should have won because they are usually the better team.  And if the Bucks lose a close game against a comparably talented team, I am both.

As a KC Chiefs fan, I expect it more often so it doesn't bother me as much. Although this year has been particularly harsh, thank god last week was a bye, and I look to my buckeyes to make the weekend better. So basically it is relative to the fact that I am use to KC losing now and not OSU losing. Even with this being a non-postseason year, last saturday was tough to watch because I am not use to it.

Like Hail said:

1. Buckeyes loss

2. Buckeyes basketball loss

3. Chiefs loss

4. fantasy loss

5. Horrible draft pick by Chiefs or NBA team (to remain unnamed due to the patheticness of them despite my fandom).

I'm a Bears fan so I've only experienced a loss one time for two of my beloved teams. I'm also a gigantic White Sox fan so I got the watch them crumble like decaying teeth this year-after that, nothing seemed to suck as much.

At this point, OSU has exceeded my expectations. The only game I'll be upset over is Penn State. Even a Michigan loss, even at home won't matter to me because its Michigan. The Yin to our Yang, the water to our oil. Penn State fans are so weird, stupid, crazy, and hellbent on making the OSU game a rivalry (despite our empty feelings towards them) that a loss in Creepy Valley would crush me.

As far as the Bears-they are a legit Super Bowl contender, and pushing Atlanta for best team in the NFL. Any loss at this point will piss me off. To the OP, tough loss last night man. 3 Red Zone TO's....killers. Detroit lost that game yesterday, Chicago didn't exactly win it.

With that said-The Bears have the best D in NFL by a country mile.

Man, do I know that feeling. You can I could probably trade bad first round picks and not run out of names. There might not be a worse drafting team in the NFL than the Bears, if it is, it might be KC.

I get upset when the Buckeyes lose, but the really strong emotions pretty much are over about 20 minutes after the game is, but later in the night I'll sit there and thing DAMN.  I don't have an NFL football team I love.  NFL football to me is more about fantasy than it is the actual teams and games.  I just don't care that much.  HOWEVER, the one pro team I love is the Reds, and I damn near cried when they lost to the Giants, and I am genuinely aggrivated when they lose regular season games, again, the emotion usually goes away pretty quickly but still.  The loss in the playoffs this year though brought me back to 14 year old Brian in 1995 when I was so sure they were going to win it all and the Braves swept them.  I was beside myself back then.  This team, I didn't think was going to win the world series, but I was upset they lost almost like I was when I was a kid.  It's good, however, to have a team I can feel emotion about and not just be apathetic toward the outcome because of years of horrible baseball.

Nothing hits harder than a Buckeye loss in football.  Losses matter so much in college football, one loss can be just devastating.  It's only a 12 game season, with a LONG offseason.  The sport is designed for you to hang on every week.

I'm with you on pro sports.  I was REALLY behind the Reds this season.  It hurt pretty bad when they lost.  But, they have Joey and BP for the long haul.  They've got a great starting pitcher rotation.  I like Dusty and they're bringing him back.  They have a spectacular bullpen that figures to get better.  Plus, it's only 5 months away from spring training.  So, I was able to set my sights forward almost immediately after Game 5 of the NLDS.

My wife asks me why I get so worked up over losses.  I've tried to explain to her that you can't have the highs without the lows.  After all my shouting on Saturday, maybe she's starting to understand that the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat go hand in hand.  I can say unequivocally that I would not have experienced the same level of euphoria in the Buckeyes winning the NC if I hadn't lived through the Cooper years.

I love to watch sports, even if I don't have an interest in the outcome, but I have a hard enough time carving time out for the games that matter to me.  If you are not emotionally invested in your teams, what is the point of watching the games?  There are a lot of other things you could be doing with your weekends.
