Auburn

Nothing concrete yet but posts on 274 are claiming that the Chicago Tribune will have a story in the coming days saying that Jordan Diamond (remember that OL that Mich and OSU both turned down for behavior issues) took $50k to go to Auburn.

Again this is slightly premature but if this goes down there could potentially be a full on investigation into Auburn's program.

SEC team? NCAA says nothing to see here

"You're pissed because we went after a committed guy? Guess what, we got 9 guys who better go do it again," said Meyer. "Do it a little harder next time."

Wow. And my post about Chizik being safe is barely two days old...

Don't be shocked if NCAA actually does jump in now that Newton's making 50K a month and Auburn is on its way to an eight-loss season. Easy pickin's.

If this is true it will be hard for Auburn to find a coach to take Chizik's place depending on how hard the ban hammer comes down on them.

I think the notion that SEC programs don't get in trouble with the NCAA is pretty far off base though.  Bama, Auburn, Mississippi State, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Kentucky have all ben in trouble in recent years.  Even LSU got a slap on the wrist.  SEC programs have had more than their share of problems over the years that's for sure.

I'm glad we avoided this kid like the plague though.  Could you imagine if we landed that recruit and he took something from a Booster, Ohio State Football would be destroyed because of the repeat offender status already leavied on the school.

@DrewBuckeye While I appreciate the work you are trying to do with your whole "inside information", I think that many people on this site get upset because you claim your information to be inside when in reality it has already been reported and is by that time everywhere on the internet.  Hayze was thanked for this information because he clearly stated that 247sports was where he got his information and he isn't reporting it, just relaying the info over to us.  It's not that we wouldn't love to hear your inside information, but it seems unlikely from our perspectives that you truly have these inside sources.

@DetroitBuckeye, Im with ya. When I was at the Auburn/LSU game the AU fans were really respectful. They arent a bad group of people.

As far as the Foster thing, there def. is something fishy about that. He is commited to Bama then all of a sudden he is commmitted to AU and his mom has a job out there. Just dont know how much it took for AU to get him to commit out there. He almost got AU in trouble though because he couldnt keep his mouth shut. We will see how long that lasts but I think with Diamond thing coming out its gonna reopen a can of worms.

@btalbert25 When were all of these NCAA issues? Was it before the run of however many MNC's in a row the $EC has won? Seems like they haven't gotten in ANY trouble in recent years, there was a thing a few months ago at South Carolina that most people seemed to agree was worse than what was going on here and they got a minor slap on the wrist. It's about time for one of those programs to get nailed, hope it happens in this case (if accusations prove to be true and ESPiN doesn't sweep it under the rug).

Bama and Kentucky  were in the BCS Era, maybe not the last 6 years, but they have had trouble in the last 10-15 years.  I just don't believe there is a conspiracy by the NCAA and ESPN to keep the SEC out of trouble is all.   South Carolina, Tennessee, and LSU were all in the last couple of years.  Their trouble may be probation and just a couple of schollies, but they've been hit.

The severity of the violation isn't what got Ohio State, it was the repeat offender status that got them.  According to Charles Robinson, Ohio Sate got off pretty lucky.  He said there was a source who wouldn't come forward or go on record, that had he spilled all his information could of really sunk Ohio State.

I asked my buddy who is an Auburn fan and he got on the board and asked about that to his fellow AU fans and got hammered for it. I guess what they are saying is that it is old news and that it was started by some bama fan supposedly. They flamed him calling him a bama fan just for asking a question so touchy subject I guess. But he told me that supposedly Bama is gonna be in some warm water for something to do with recruiting. I will have to ask him more about it but that was all I got out of this situation.

Hearing the same thing from alot of other sites and forums. Will be interesting if true and if actually run by the Tribune then looks like G Bone may have gotten his boy and family the money he was seeking. Although remember that nothing came of the Anthony Davis scandal which I believe the Tribune reported. Color me shocked (sarcasm) if nothing comes of this just another day in the week for that conference.

Love how the NCAA acts swiftly on OSU but then takes their time with Auburn, Miami, USC. I get there is a new regime now in Indianapolis but come on your telling me they dont have proof of Cam and other Auburn players taking money??? I mean Dan Mullen's wife almost got Miss. St. in trouble for revealing that Miss St was the low bidder for Cam's services.

i bet Auburn ratted on themselves so they could escape the 7 million dollar buyout they gave Gene Chizik. they won't make a bowl game at this rate anytime soon anyhow, so whats the risk?

Ohio State's problems just happened at a bad time.  NCAA was losing relevance in a hurry, Everyone was all worked up about Cam Newton, and the fact that the NCAA let the ineligible players play in Ohio State's Sugar bowl run, then in the middle of it all, Ohio State had players dumb enough to accept gifts at a charity event and take on jobs where they may have been paid and not done the work to earn that pay.  SO, the NCAA wanted to come down on someone, and show they were relevant.  That just happened to be Ohio State.  Had the DiGeronimo stuff never happened, it probably wouldn't have been so bad, but it did so it is.

I honestly don't believe it had anything to do with the conference.  It was just a bad time to get caught with violations because the NCAA needed to flex it's muscles. Penn State gave them another opportunity. This year it will be Miami.  For 2013 they have the opportunity for Auburn, Oregon, UNC(who they are taking a look at still) and others who may pop up along the way.

They don't NEED to go after them all, they just need to go after 1 every year to show they still mean business, and they will be big programs, because that will make the news.

Bolt is right. Cam Newton's dad got at least a quarter mill for his son's services. Then again, Diamond is just an O-lineman, so maybe the going rate for them is only 50k.

somewhat unrelated, but I hope lsu beats bama, bama beats fla in the seccg, and at least 2 of kstate, nd, and oregon win out so the 'almighty sec' is left out of the title game. maybe that and the upcoming ncaa investigations will take them down a couple notches.

The other reason that Scam Newton didn't get caught was because he played in a small town in the south, and he grew up in a small town in the south where his father was a very important man.  People don't talk to strangers about that kind of business in the south, especially when the people asking are "carpetbaggers".

Set your avi
btalbert25 on 25 Oct 2012 - 2:43pm #

SPQR, I can agree with you about small towns, but I don't think it's unique to the south.  If you come from outside a small town and move to, people never quite trust you.  My parents are dealing with that now.  They just moved into a small town in Indiana last year.  My dad does pretty well and he has been in his free time helping out the tourism council of the town and has pitched a few ideas to small business and farmers down there to try and boost their business.  He's not making or going to make any money on the deal, he's just trying to help the town and county out some and people are always skeptical.  The can't figure out why this guy who moved from the City wants to come down there and change things.

Thought this was standard practice for an SEC team?

People wonder why Cam Newton isn't doing so good at the Panthers now and it's simple really. He isn't making as much now as he made in college.

Douglas "Swish" Reemer: As much as he made playing in college?
Baxter Cain: What? No, a lot more! Big money, and you can too!
Douglas "Swish" Reemer: Would I have to quit baseketball?

It would be fun if coaches just put kids on blast publicly trying to solicit money.  It would make wherever the kid ended up look shady and would definitly discourage it in the future.  May hurt a few kids but in the long run might help change the sport.
