A Toast To Ed Warriner

After last Saturday's performance I think it's safe to say that Ed Warriner has done a phenomenal job turning around this offensive line.  Some of these guys were the ones that we're humilated last season by MSU and we had to replace a few starters as well.  They made amends for last season by dominating the Spartan defensive line paving the way for a 200+ rushing day against one of the best defenses in the B1G.  Well done!

It will be interesting to see how many O Linemen graded out as champions.

Take a TE, convert him to T and prepare him to handle William Gholston mostly one-on-one 5 games in !!  Great job!

The O-line really does seem to be getting it this year, which speaks to the problems that were there last year. Blows my mind that this year's line, full of guys in new positions, some with new attitudes, seems to be eclipsing the line last year, which was stocked with talent and experience. Just thinking about what Warriner could have done with those guys makes me shake my head. BTW, it is also interesting how Warriner is getting kudos after another site had some very negative things to say about him, his coaching style, and his recruiting earlier in the year (not that he did here on 11w).

Definitely. Warriner has done a great job and I'm sure things will only get better as they are able to bring in some top notch recruits and build some good depth. It also helps immensely when you don't have an incompetent offensive coordinator calling the same play every 1st and 2nd down.

Entire OSU O-Line is named champions and players of the game for Michigan State.

Kyle just tweeted this.  Way to go, guys!

Warinner said four starting O-Linemen were in the WHAC at 6:30 a.m. today wanting to watch film. “That tells me they're all-in.”

Awesome.  Its all coming together!

Thrilled. Like I said previously, this o-line is probably top to bottom the least talented with the least depth that we've had for years under Bollman and this line is outperforming them easily.

Maybe they are not the least talented with the least depth after all.

Bolt's picture
Bolt on 1 Oct 2012 - 1:54pm #

Than some of the top notch recruits we've pulled in and played with talented big name recruits sitting on the bench ready to step in behind them? We have a RT who played TE for the last 3 years and he's playing as well or better than previous RTs we've had. We've totally reshuffled everyone's position, people have transferred out and we have nothing but freshmen and walkons as far as the depth chart is concerned.

Run_Fido_Run on 1 Oct 2012 - 2:06pm #

Bolt: you made a good argument for lack of depth, but not for lack of talent. Recruiting rankings are fun for fans to follow - and often can be good baromoters for incoming talent - but as you know stars do not necessarily = talent. If I'm remembering right, that converted TE was recruited by other high caliber programs to play OT, but came to Ohio State because he wanted to play TE. The two-deep consists mostly of heavily recruited "blue-chip" linemen.

I agree, though, that last year's OL underperformed.

I'm surprised they have been this good. I haven't noticed the loss of Brewster at all, and it stood to reason that he would be the hardest to replace. I don't know that we have a weak link. The fewer penalties speak for themselves. And while the Fragel move initially struck me as sheer desperation, he's been more than adequate.

I hate to do the lazy thing and chalk it all up to the coaching change ... but yeah, it's the coaching change.

I really don't think it's much of a stretch to say that this is not nearly as talented and deep of an offensive line as we've had in years past. We've been bringing in top quality guys for years, surely. This is definitely the thinnest we've been compared to years past. There's a reason this was repeatedly addressed in the offseason as an area of concern...often times by the coaches themselves. Yet we're getting more production from this unit than under the walrus' watch.

Bolt's picture
Bolt on 1 Oct 2012 - 5:49pm #

Please don't take this as I'm calling these guys garbage...there are a couple guys on the line that were high profile recruits (though nothing like Brewster, Adams, Shugarts) as well. But even those guys are playing at a significantly higher level than they previously have been. I don't care if Fragel was recruited to play tackle, you would have to imagine someone who was recruited to play tackle and played it for 3 years at high level Big Ten play would be able to be more productive than someone who just got shuffled in there as a patch job. It was pretty well contested as to who would start between Fragel and Decker, a true freshman, at the beginning of the season and Fragel seemed to wind up winning by default. He's gotten significantly better and, absolutely, that is a testament to Reid Fragel...but also the coaching he's receiving.

I'm going to say judging off results alone. Ole Eddy is the best hire of the current coaching staff. Hopefully he is around for a few years.

Bolt, I don't think you were insulting these guys. I was just saying, with what we have seen so far this year-that maybe you contradicted yourself while complementing them.

Bolt's picture
Bolt on 1 Oct 2012 - 6:37pm #

I'm thrilled with the production. I think we have an offensive line that is (personnel talent wise) on par at best and slightly below par at worst compared to what we've had in years past. However, I like what I see from this line and feel like we're getting better production than in years past. Naturally, this leads me to believe they are receiving superior coaching this year. This is my only point.

Bollman was a "talent vampire." It seemed like he was able to take top high school lineman and turn them into average college players. Warriner looks like he's going to develop some top talent that will be able to move more easily into the next level. A great addition to the staff.

@EAGLE_EYE - Gee makes 1 million a year (actually, more like $950,000).  The $7 million is expenses that he's incurred over the years (travel, etc.).

Growing up watching Woody's O-lines just destroy opponents, the MSU game was SO sweet - felt like for the 1st time in a long time there was a chance we could be getting back to our roots (of having a dominant OL).

I got to watch his work at KU and frankly if anyone can help get that team to the Orange Bowl (let alone win it) in this day and age they deserve an automatic entry into the hall of fame.  Also he is the brother of my junior year math teacher!  Hard for me not to root for him given where he has coached and the job he has done.

The turn around the o-line has made... I don't care how many OL Paul Chryst put into the league, Ed Warriner is working some magic. Dorian Johnson you won't be the only thing Chryst focuses on... Your unit will be Warriner's only focus however at Ohio State.
