5 Stars ?

Just wondering how the Star Ratings work.  If I remember correctly before the season started Cam Burrows was rated a 5 Star DB.  Due to a perceived poor performance in the summer camp circuit he was  downgraded to 4 Star.  On the other hand, an un-named player from tTUN was ranked a 4 Star QB, and had a percieved good camp circuit, which I quess is a matter of opinion, and was promptly upgraded to a 5 Star.  After the season started the QB had a less than stellar season throwing just 6 TD's and 6 INT's with a QB rating of 71.  I understand he missed a few games with mono, which makes you wonder why this player is still rated a 5 star recruit.  Maybe someone could shed some light on this for me.

Either you have an athlete that takes absolutely 0 influence by anyone for everyone to see this is an absolute cant miss College star OR The Power of Money attending all the elite camps tied in with The Yes factor (meaning influences). IMO Clausen is a perfect example for the Yes factor.

In my opinion, actual games are not factored into the star system as much as they should be.  More focus is on the standard scouting measurables like arm strength, size, speed, etc.  scUM's QB recruit is an example of this -- albeit an imperfect one due to his sickness probably having a severe impact on his game performance.  I think after the season there is a reassessment of star rating.  But I could be wrong.

I don't think the indictment of Morris here is accurate. When the season wraps up, sites will do a broad re-evaluation, and his 5th star will be brought into question.

rankings also depend on whether or not the player is committed. when it comes down to it, recruiting is a business that sites like 247, rivals, etc make money off of. they create the drama by pushing uncommitted players that would normally be top 300, up into the top 150 or 100. not saying some kids don't deserve it, but recruiting ranking really don't mean much when you get down to 4 and 5 stars

What difference does it make?

Most sites won't update their rankings till HS football is over. Therefore he will likely be downgraded, they just haven't adjusted their rankings yet. Look for a big upset in rankings before NSD.

I think Steensen is right. Most sites don't release new rankings until after the season and after they evaluate game tape. I don't think they want to only review one player at a time, but I do agree that Morris should be demoted.

If you commit early you will often get downgraded because, these recruiting services need to keep the excitement up and continue getting people to pay their site fees. Once you commit you are old news and you don't drive revenue to the site, they need to make room (i.e. keep it exclusive) to bring uncommitted kids into the ranks of the 5 star so early commits will often get downgraded. Also if you don't take part in the right camps or any camps you get downgraded.

I wouldn't be surprised if Morris gets a downgrade, but most sites have set times of year when they update stars. I know after camps and after the season are two big ones, but there are other times when they change as well.

The stars on these sites are a guess at best. OSU has got plenty of 5 stars that play like 2-3 star players, and plenty of 2-3 star guys that play like 5 stars. Its hard to rank work ethic, discipline. These sites will get guys right, but will also under rank good players, and overrate average players. The best guys to trust is a good coaching staff such as Urban Saban or Les Miles who have great experience evaluating talent. Also certain type of players fitting systems is huge too. I agree that Shane Morris is overrated. I feel that a lot have sites have committed him as a 5 star recruit due to a few good camps. For him just look at his performance against a big time team (St. Iggy) he's a 3 star IMO

I just watched him (Morris) on ESPNU at a couple of camps, and really wasn't impressed with what I saw.  Most of the coverage was 7 on 7 games, but again it wasn't too impressive.  They claim he has a big arm, but doesn't seem too accurate.  Taking into consideration the mono thing, I even looked at his 2011 stats, he was ranked #1 in Michigan but 316 in the nation.  I guess time will tell, but I think at this point sCUM can have him.  I agree with OTRAIN, we have to put faith in UFM to bring "quality" recruits in.

Good player's make the play's they're suppose to, great player's make the play's they're NOT !!!

I think Morris is really good, considering where high school pro style guys are at this time. You're way more likely to find a dual threat guy that's ready to take the reigns in college than a pro style guy just because the reliance on throwing, and the things they need to learn.

He's not best in this class by any means, be he can really spin the ball, has improving touch, and has a cannon

Some sites use a kid's offer sheet as part of the evaluation process.  Once a kid commits early, other teams stop recruiting before an offer goes out, which can affect his ranking.

The best HS team in Michigan would get curb stomped by a mid level HS team in Ohio. Morris dominates his competition because his competition in Michigan blows. But these recruiting services are still all over his balls.

@ gray skull, but 6 Tds and 6 ints doesn't sound like he's even dominating Michigan  competition.

Remember Davonte Neal last year? He was always hanging around the 100s in ranking, but then by the end of the recruiting season, he was like #7 on espnu 150. In my opinion, he was never top ten worthy, but since he committed late, espn got much more traffic to their site because everyone wanted to know about "Davonte Neal-7th ranked player in the country" and where he was going to commit. I'm not saying he isnt good, just that i agree with you guys in that espn likely raised his star level so that they got more traffic. Just my thoughts

Morris is a decent QB and is going to a program that can benefit from his skill set. The biggest thing that he brings to Meat Chicken is his ability to recruit. That alone shows that he has leadership ability. But face it Meat Chicken, he is no Braxton Miller and his number at tOSU would be H2O.

Star ratings are based on how the evaluators project them in college.

Squirrel Master's picture

Stars aren't based on anything but projection at the next level. A guy can be killing it in high school but if he doesn't project well in college, he won't get those stars. It is very similar to NFL draft. Until last year, RG3, the Heisman (best college player) was rarely considered a possible #1 overall pick. The best college player didn't always project as the best prospect for the NFL.

I like to refer to it as the "Rudy" factor! Plays really well in high school through effort and hard work but really just has no business on a college field!

Shane may not have had a great season this year but he still projects to be an awesome QB, unfortunately! Burrows had some evaluators see he doesn't turn his hips as well as he should be. That is what downgraded him, not performance.

Sprinkle is killing it and has a lot of potential coming in, I expect him to get a 4th star, but if he doesn't it is not because how he played this year. It will probably be because he is too short, or has small arms, or doesn't bend as well as he should. Something like that. It doesn't mean he will suck in college, he just doesn't meet the measurables for the stars! Hence why guys like JL come in as 3* and ends up awesome! It really is sad that there isn't a better evaluation system. But it has gotten better.
