2014 Quarterbacks

Just thought I'd start a thread about the 2014 QBs.

Here are the current targets: DeShone Kizer (OH), Deshaun Watson (GA), Drew Barker (KY), Caleb Henderson (VA), William Crest (VA) and Kyle Allen (AZ).

Personally, I would love to land Watson and Barker. I think Watson is the best out of all of them and Barker loves OSU and is a leader of men. Wouldn't be upset about Kizer either. Think he could be a dynamic player down the road.

To me right now, it looks like Watson is the top porspect on our board and we are waiting to offer Barker until we know that either we have no chance at Watson or we do. I just hope we don't wait too long.

Also, word on 247 is that Henderson is most likely going to MSU. Apparently his dad and MSUs D-Cord Pat Narduzzi were roommates in college so Henderson has a really good relationship with him.

What do you guys think about 2014 QBs?

I wouldn't protest to taking 2 QBs, not to mentione we're not positive Watson is being viewed as a QB at this point. I say offer Barker now, let the Watson situation sort itself out as it goes.

At this point, Cardale Jones has all but lost his chance in the program, so we're gonna need to hedge our bets at QB.

@bucki8 How do you figure Cardale has lost his chance?  Everyone loves a good redemption story.

It's a tough call for me.  I know Kizer is probably the fastest of the bunch, but I think Barker provides a nice combination of strong arm and running ability.

As for Cardale Jones, Buck-I.8, what makes you think he's lost his chance in the program?  Coach Meyer has actually said nice things about him lately.

Between the latest debacle and the spring game tweets, he's almost the archetype for the guy that Meyer hates to have on his team

If we land Watson or Barker the other will not follow.. These guys have their choice of top programs, they won't come to OSU to compete for a spot when they will be given one at say Clemson. We're best to go for Barker or Watson and then grab a 3* with potential if we decide to take two QBs.

Barker, that is all! He's going to be a good one, but if we do wait too long, he could end up at U of L or UK depending on who they hire.

Buck I.8

Actually since tweet-gate with Cardale, I have heard nothing but good things about Cardale from my friend on the team. Says he is a beast and he actually is a really good student that made a poor decision. That fact that he deleted his twitter is a sign of (slight) maturity. Also was told he is up to 6'5" 260 and can really sling it. While I wouldn't say Cardale is ready to take the reigns anytime soon, i wouldnt write him off yet

About 2014 QBs:

Barker and Crest are my favorites, with a slight edge to Barker because he seems to have a leadership quality and a desire to lead a class. Maybe Crest does too, I just haven't seen it yet.

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

we NEED two QBs...we are one snap away right now from Cardale Jones or Justin Siems playing QB....depth is thin

When 2014 guys come on campus, Braxton will be a senior (hopefully), Jones will be a redshirt soph (hopefully), and Barrett will be a redshirt frosh or soph. I think with Braxton leaving after the season we need two QBs in this class to have four solid options heading into 2015 season when we the QB position will be wide open for the first time in a long time.

That being said, my wish list in order:

  • Watson- loves OSU, but getting him out of Clemson's wrath won't be easy
  • Barker- offer and I think he is a Buckeye (Bama and South Carolina main comp.)
  • Henderson- OSU would get him if offered, but I think MSU lands him due to no offer
  • Allen- great arm, maybe the best of them all, but not sure how well he fits Urban's system
  • Crest- need to see more, but would be a nice second QB IMO
  • Kizer- very raw, but also would be a nice second QB

@Alex

I see your point about depth right now, but I just don't think 2014 can afford 2 QBs unless with the limited number of scholarships for that class. If I'm not mistaken, the number is around 15 right now, assuming it gets up to 18-19, I don't think we should take 2 QBs. Right now we are in need of depth because we only had 2 legit QBs coming into the season. By the time 2014 rolls around, we will have 3 scholarship quarterbacks in their second year or later. whichever 2014 QB we take will be the fourth. Do we really NEED 5 scholarship quarterbacks? Now if by some odd chance Braxton leaves early I definitely think we need two, but I don't see that happening. 2015 should be a 3 way QB battle (Jones, Barrett, Unknown 2014 QB) and whichever QB we take in 14 will be a redshirt frosh or a soph battling for that spot.

Again, I understand where you're coming from. I just don't feel the need to have 5 scholarship quarterbacks on the roster in one season.

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

Do not know much about Watson, or any really,  thought I read a piece on 11W that Barker was a leader and a bunch of guys want to play w/him,  including Snodgrass and the big time LB prospects   ??

Set your avi
Alex on 24 Oct 2012 - 5:22pm #

@Triv...you know that number will be at least 20 recruits we can take for 2014.....also it's not about the 2014 season why we need two, but rather 2015-2019...what if Barrett doesn't work out? What if Cardale doesn't work out? You are only left with who you bring in for 2014 and I think we need two guys so we don't hang our hat on one option...we may not need a QB in the 2015 class if we take two good ones in 2014 and have them two (redshirt frosh or soph), Barrett (redshirt soph/junior), and Cardale (redshirt junior) as the options in 2015 after Braxton is gone.

Alex, do you think we can land both Watson AND Barker? That would be as good a QB class as any in recent memory if that happened and both fit the system perfectly.

Alex on 24 Oct 2012 - 5:31pm #

I think it is possible, but highly unlikely.....you're talking two of the top 10 QBs, maybe top 5, in the nation right there so I can't imagine they'd want to go to the same school....I do think OSU lands one of them though

Triv's picture

Alex...good points, and I most certainly won't complain if we take two quarterbacks in 2014. If it were my team I wouldn't, but maybe that's why it's not my team haha

I'd like to get Barker... Not extremely quick but throws it well and runs the read option well.  He also looks like he has a frame that can handle some more weight.  Would be good to put some weight on him, so he can endure a full season of hits.

I thought I read somewhere that Watson had already been offered, but they want him as an ATH and not a QB.  Could we get Watson in as an ATH and if the other QB doesn't work out give him a shot?

As some of you said, no way 2 of these guys go to the same school.

Personally I hope OSU doesn't pin all of their hopes on Watson only to watch all of the others commit to other schools because they didn't get an OSU offer.

I also agree with the poster that said OSU can't afford to take 2 QB's next year. At some point we have to stop assuming ~5 roster spots will "open up". Especially with the 3 scholly restriction.

I believe if Watson makes it up to the game the staff is gonna want to know where they stand and if there is a shot of flipping him. If they dont like what they hear then I think we see the offer to Barker. Either way I think we see more movement on the 2014 QB situation after the scUM game, which may end up as the most ridiculous visit list based on star power we have ever seen at an OSU home game.

Edit: Just FYI for Henderson he will be committing at the end of next month and the smart money is on MSU which is a good pickup for them and shows that there just isnt interest enough on tOSU's end it will be either Watson or Barker as it stands right now for us.

Never pass on a sure thing.  I'd rather not have us slowplay Barker and lose him to an SEC school.  Get him on board (seems like he would be a great recruiter too) and then sell the chance to compete to whoever we take as our #2 QB.

Golden Buckeye's picture

I think we need to get Barker as soon as we can.  He's expressed that he wants to be a leader and help recruit players.  The sooner the better.

Duckworth will be among the group the staff evaluates should they feel they want to 2 QB's in this class. Not a knock on Duckworth at all but I can see him being the #2 Qb in our 2014 class and will def be considered for that spot after the staff evaluates the depth.

Of the QB's that you mention, Watson is my favorite.  Do you think that Dareian Watkins has a chance to play QB in Meyer's system?

Set your avi
SpoonerBuck33 on 24 Oct 2012 - 8:17pm #

@Yankeescum I think theres a slight chance but think the staff views him as an athlete and there is a group of guys ahead of him there. If Watkins gets an offer hell need to do it during camps ala Darron Lee and blow the staff away IMO

Alex, thank you for agreeing with what I've been saying all along.  We need 2 QBs in the 2014 class.  I think a combo of Watson or Barker plus Crest or Kizer would be ideal.

But I also wanted to ask you about another QB on the radar.  I'm not sure if you follow any of the other sites, but I believe it was ESPN or Bucknuts that said OSU was close to offering another QB outside of these 6.  I can't remember his name, sorry, but I think he's from the East Coast somewhere.  It caught my eye, only because if they do in fact offer this guy before any of the others, it might not sit well.  Do you know anything about this.

The player's name is William Ulmer from DC and he said he was told an offer was coming.

And I (and others) re-itterate there is no way that 2 of those 4 QB's will play for the same school.

bucknut8's picture
bucknut8 on 24 Oct 2012 - 11:16pm #

there's an article on scout pretty much saying he will be committing to MSU. That is a HUGE get for MSU if that is true. Id like to see OSU take Barker or Watson, & take another for 2014 ONLY IF the class can stretch to the 20's.

We really need to worry about adding more OL & fixing the LB before we worry about adding 2 QBs

I have a question, why does it seem like most of these guys are pro style quarterbacks?  Wouldn't Urban want an athletic qb to run his spread, just wondering.  Granted Watson, Crest, and Kizer are not of this mold but why worry about guys like Barker or the other slower ones when they do not fit the system.

btalbert25 on 24 Oct 2012 - 11:38pm #

I don't think Barker is really a pro-style QB.  He may not be a rusher like Braxton, but he's not bad either.  Here is a video that was posted in the forum a few weeks back.  Barker can sling it and run pretty well.

Ultimately, Barker may not be the guy here, but I don't think he'd be horrible in Urban's offense.  I hope he gets an offer, because I think he'll be a really good college QB.  We'll see I guess.

DetroitBuckeye's picture
DetroitBuckeye on 24 Oct 2012 - 11:53pm #

I was not targeting Barker specifically when making that comment it's just that half of those qbs listed were pro style guys according to rivals.  Just do not want a John Brantley situation.

I take it back as I saw the video dude looks like a beast.  Why would he be listed as a pro style qb?????

Next years class will get to 20 bc 5th year guys are not guaranteed schollies like in years past with Tresssel then you factor attrition, transfers, and early draftees and we should be around 20 as a target number for the 2014 class which could factor in how the staff goes about the QB offers.

It will be exciting to not have a bauserman type backup. If the Defensive recruits start panning out the backup will see a lot of action in the future. I like Barker's intangibles. He is not as good a runner as Braxton but I have never seen a better college runner.(My humble opinion)

Set your avi
btalbert25 on 25 Oct 2012 - 9:30am #

Detroit, I'm not sure why they have him listed prostyle, that's why I linked the video.  I think he could probably thrive in that kind of offense too as dude seems to have a cannon and looks to be right on with his passes.  I wonder if Brantley didn't succeed because he was a pro-style QB, or he just didn't live up to his recruiting records.  I could of just been that he was kind of a flop not so much the offense he was running.

I say land Barker now and let him start recruiting kids.  Then maybe take a hard look at Kizer.  I can see that kid going somewhere in the B1G and killing us...

Buckeye_in_SEC_... on 25 Oct 2012 - 12:31pm #

Barker runs the spread offense right now... He is really good at the read option and has great touch on the ball when throwing.  His biggest asset is his leadership.  I've read a lot about his leadership on the field and his determination.

The staff offered Watson a long time ago, but said they would be evaluating film before sending out QB offers.  I personally think they offered him as an ATH, not a QB.

Set your avi
SpoonerBuck33 on 25 Oct 2012 - 6:23pm #

If youve seen Watson throw a football his offer is def as a QB he throws a very beautiful ball and has very good feet and mechanics for a kid his age. After the scUM game the QB list will get clearer but I think the staff has an idea of who theyre going to target this isnt the type of staff that will sit on film and not have an idea.
