Sean McDonough deemed it necessary to note the refs were a B!G crew. He continued, by stating he'd observed the number of Cal penalties, to that point. He concluded by suggesting some might wonder if a B!G crew reffing this game, was to Cal's unfair disadvantage.
And then...Ohio State found itself under a heap of flags.

common dude..you are better than this
I dont always root for college athletics, but when i do (which is most of the time) I choose THE Ohio State Buckeyes.
that is unbelievebly conspiracyish of you..but i will say that it was a ridiculous thing to say on national TV
Well i like college and i like football...and im gunna keep doin em both cause they make me feel good!!!
no. us being stupid was.

I usually don't comment on dumb threads... but I have to say this is dumb...
I noticed him saying something about the need for refs that aren't from the B1G...either way --- I've never been a fan of McDonough, something about this voice

Only problem with this notion is that except for the last pass interference penalty, I can't say the calls were bad.

Oh. My. God.
Ohio State fans can be sad, pathetic little fans...

No... but it is best to watch ESPN games with the volume off.
YEP! ESPNS fault we looked absolutely horrible today. Cmon give credit where credit is due.
I think the refs bailed us out twice today on holding calls that were suspect at best.
~Because we couldn't go for three~
I have heard some dumb conspiracy theories before, but this....
Even IF the announcers were playing up some B10 ref advantage...how could ESPN then influence the outcome of the game?
I was at the game and the one deep ball to corey brown that he like dove for and bobbled on the ground looked like a catch. The whole student section was screaming for a review and never got one? Were we missing something?
@ URBANCULTURE --- no, Urban made the right call there. That pass skipped off of the grass before he caught it. No need to challenge that incompletion.
I, too, thought the refs were overall fair to OSU. I'm just not a McDonough fan.
I miss the good old days when Ron Franklin would call ESPN games. He didn't call any OSU ones I can remember of, but he called a lot of those Saturday night SEC games in the late 90s/early 00s. He, and Musburger are my favorite play-by-play guys.
"You win with people." - Woody Hayes
Come on. Enough with the paranoia. Ohio State played less than good but still manages to win and you think ESPN was attempting to influence the outcome? Give me a break. I am so tired of all this ESPN is out to get OSU talk over and over again. Its getting really old.
Matt Millen must've rubbed on to McDonough.
/Duff'd It
Spielman brought up the calls and expressed his disagreement with them well before McDonough put in his two cents. I agree that you can say a crew missed some calls or that Team X got a break, but to start with the conspiracy bologna is a bit much.

Yeah, I thought the refs uniformly sucked all the way around. No conspiracy involved.....

It's B1G. Not B!G.
Can we please get this thread deleted? I hate these stupid tinfoil hat wearing neckbeards.
"if irony were made of strawberries, we' d all be drinking a lot of smoothies right now."
It was kind of a dumb thing to say. Like this is the first and only time a conference crew has ever called a non-league game for a member team? However, that's it. Like everyone else said we deserved the calls we got because we played dumb. Besides I am old school in the sense that the umpires/referees/etc. should never be blamed for your loss. There may be a bad call or two but there's always other reasons that a team loses a game.
We played suck butt football and were lucky we won........anything that happened to us on Saturday we readily deserved
Battles are sometimes won by generals; wars are nearly always won by sergeants and privates. Football is no different, the guys down in the trenches win the games, not the coach.
I'm sexy and I know it!
Wherever you are, there you be!
Sidenote: Sean McDonough looks like he could've been a horse racing jockey. Perhpas he missed his calling.
Sean McDonough talking about which conference the refs are from can somehow influence the outcome of a game. The refs apparently can hear the ESPN broadcast of the game or someone else did and is talking in their ear.
I thought the game was officiated very fairly. OSU and Cal were both heavily penalized because they were both sloppy and at times, chippy. I don't remember any call being too objectable.
Class of 2010.
There are always calls that go both ways in a game....most of the ones Ohio State got flagged for Sat. were good ones.
I also didn't like Sean McDonnough's comments about the referees, making it sound like they were favoring us. Just absolutely laughable. Bill Lemmonier's crew has been consistently anti-Ohio State for YEARS. Just watch the Purdue 2009 game (I'm not saying we deserved to win that one, but it's just out of this world ridiciulous what that crew did to us in multiple situations), Penn State 2010 or the 2011 Michigan game. They didn't throw a flag on Michigan until the 4th quarter in that game despite blatant holding by their OL throughout the game as well as numerous neutral zone infractions that they called the other way.
And the penalty stats for the Cal game show us with 61 yards of ADDITIONAL yards in penalties. 11 for 101 yards compared to 4 for 40 yards. Give me a break Sean, if there was favoritism, it definitely went their way.
Stupid forum piece is stupid.
-The Aristocrats!
Apparently the list of those "anti OSU" has grown to include B1G officials.
I think the actual comment was about a need for one single nationwide officiating crew rather than different conferences, just so no one could be cynical with B1G officials calling the game. He wasn't at all speculating that the officials were favoring Ohio State, he was saying he hopes that no one else does. Spin doctors ftw
NO NO NO NO NO NO NO.
Announcers aren't pro or anti anyone. This notion that there is some sort of cabal of officials, refs, writers, and announcers with some deep seeded bias against OSU is laughable. Its paranoia. As OSU fans, we want 'fair' coverage but only if it puts OSU in a positive light. Lemmonier isn't anti-OSU. He's pro under dog...and OSU is primarily the favorite in every game-that's the rub guys. Ohio State is one of the premier, elite programs in the nation-talking about them generates attention\pageviews\readers\watchers. Simple as that. You can't have all of the fame with out some of the negative press, that's the way it works. That doesn't mean people go out of their way to 'go after' OSU.
This thread is literally the most embarassing thing I've ever read on 11W. Just stop....
4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off
I'm surprised this forum topic has made it through the day w/o getting deleted. Is it me or are we all getting trolled for even commenting here?
I support the deletion of this thread. May we never speak of it again.
I know there's a game saturday, and my ass will be there.
Spielman called the game with whatever Mcdudes name is. Spielman is not anti OSU. The refs were not anti or pro OSU. ESPN was not anti or pro OSU. It was a football game on the TV with referees, announcers & penalties. Nothing more, nothing less.

I don't know why conferences have their own groups of officials. It may sound shady to some, even though in reality, groups of refs aren't going to favor the conference they come from. I don't know, just never understood why it is that way.
